Performance of an air-cooled plate heat exchanger (PHE) was evaluated in this study. The PHE was manufactured in two types of single-wave and double-wave plates in parallel assembly. The heat exchanger aims to substitute open-loop cooling towers with closed-loop water circulation, which guarantees cleanliness and compactness. In this study, prototype single-wave and double-wave PHEs were designed and tested in a laboratory scale experiments. From the tests, the double-wave PHE shows approximately 50% enhanced heat transfer performance compared to the single-wave PHE. However, the double-wave PHE costs 30% additional pressure drop. For the commercialization, a wide channel design for air flow would be essential for performance and reliability.

Experimental study on a cross-flow air-cooled plate heat exchanger (PHE) was performed. Two types of PHEs were manufactured either with single-wave plates or with double-wave plates in parallel. Cooling air flows through the PHEs in a crosswise direction against internal hot water.

This paper proposes a low power capacitor cross-coupled 5.2 GHz band low noise amplifier(LNA) using the current-reused topology with the TSMC 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process. The proposed 5.2 GHz band LNA uses a capacitor cross-coupled $g_m$-boosting method for reducing current flow of circuit and a current-reused topology to decrease total power dissipation. The parallel LC networks are used to reduce size of spiral inductors. The simulation results show high gain of 17.4 dB and noise figure(NF) of 2.7 dB for 5.2 GHz.
In this study we investigated ac transport current losses in the face to face stack for the anti-parallel current flow, and compared the electromagnetic properties with those of the single SC tape as well as those of the same stack for the parallel current path. The gap between the SC tapes in the stack varied in order to verify the electromagnetic influence of the neighbors when current flows in opposite direction, and the model was implemented in the finite element method program by the commercial software, COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2a. Conclusively speaking, the loss was remarkably decreased for the anti-parallel current case, which is attributed the magnetic flux compensation between the SC layers due to the opposite direction of the current flows. As the gap between SC tapes was increased, the loss mitigation became less effective. Besides, the current density distribution is very flat cross the sample width for the narrower gap case, which is believed to be benefit for the power electric system. These results are all in good agreement with those predicted theoretically for an infinite bifilar stack.

For the study of transport phenomena of an aqueous NaCl solution through a cuprophane membrane, a new apparatus was constructed. The volumc flow rate Q, the permeability coefficient U, and the permeability constant K were measured or determined by using this apparatus. The experimental temperature range was 5 to $35^{\circ}C$, and the applied pressure increments were 10 to 40 psi. By assuming that the cuprophane membrane is composed of n parallel cylindrical capillaries of circular cross-section and that the flow of the solution through the capillaries follows the Poiseulle law, the mean radius r of the capillaries and the number n of the latter in the membrane were evaluated. By using a reasonable assumption concerning the radius ${\eta}'$ of the species diffusing through the membrane, it was concluded that the contribution of the diffusive flow to the total flow rate Q is less than 10%. Thus, the Q was treated as the rate due to the viscous flow, and the viscosity ${\eta}_m$ of the solution in the membrane phase was evaluted, and it was found that ηm is nearly equal to ${\eta}_b$, the bulk viscosity of the solution. From this fact, it was concluded that in the capillaries, no change occurs in the physical state of the NaCl solution. The value of ( = 4.27 kcal/mole) and ${\Delta}Sm^{\neq}$(4.28 eu) were obtained for the viscous flow. A possible explanation was given.
In this study, a polyhedral domain decomposition method for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) analysis is introduced. SPH which is one of meshless methods is a numerical analysis method for fluid flow simulation. It can be useful for analyzing fluidic soil or fluid-structure interaction problems. SPH is a particle-based method, where increased particle count generally improves accuracy but diminishes numerical efficiency. To enhance numerical efficiency, parallel processing algorithms are commonly employed with the Cartesian coordinate-based domain decomposition method. However, for parallel analysis of complex geometric shapes or fluidic problems under dynamic boundary conditions, the Cartesian coordinate-based domain decomposition method may not be suitable. The introduced polyhedral domain decomposition technique offers advantages in enhancing parallel efficiency in such problems. It allows partitioning into various forms of 3D polyhedral elements to better fit the problem. Physical properties of SPH particles are calculated using information from neighboring particles within the smoothing length. Methods for sharing particle information physically separable at partitioning and sharing information at cross-points where parallel efficiency might diminish are presented. Through numerical analysis examples, the proposed method's parallel efficiency approached 95% for up to 12 cores. However, as the number of cores is increased, parallel efficiency is decreased due to increased information sharing among cores.

A three-dimensional two-phase large eddy simulation(LES) has been conducted to investigate the breakup and atomization of liquid jets such as a diesel jet in parallel flow and water jet in cross flow. Gas-liquid two-phase flow was solved by a combined model of Eulerian for gas flow and Lagrangian for a liquid jet. Two stochastic breakup models were implemented to simulate the liquid column and droplet breakup process. The penetration depth and SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) were analyzed, which was comparable with the experimental data.

In this investigation, we prepared a 1 and 3-parallel serpentine single PEMFC, which has an active area of $100\;cm^2$ and a flow channel cross section of $1{\times}1mm$. Distribution and transport of water in a non-operating PEMFC were observed by varying flow types and the flow rates (250, 400, and 850 cc/min). This investigation was performed at the neutron imaging facility at the CO1d Neutron RAdiography facility (CONRAD), HMI, Germany of which the collimation ratio and neutron fluence rate are 250, $1{\times}10^{6}n/s/cm^2$, respectively. The neutron image was continuously recorded by a scintillator and lens-CCD coupled detector system every 10 seconds. It has been observed that although the distilled water was supplied into the cathode channel only, the neutron image showed a water movement from the cathode to the anode channel. The water at the cathode channel was completely discharged as soon as the pressurized air was supplied. But the water at the anode channel was not easily removed by the pressurized air except for the 3-parallel serpentine type with 850cc/min of air flow rate. Moreover, the water at the MEA wasn't removed for any of the cases.
The methods and performance of a pin-level nuclear reactor core thermal-hydraulics (T/H) code ESCOT employing the drift-flux model are presented. This code aims at providing an accurate yet fast core thermal-hydraulics solution capability to high-fidelity multiphysics core analysis systems targeting massively parallel computing platforms. The four equation drift-flux model is adopted for two-phase calculations, and numerical solutions are obtained by applying the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equation (SIMPLE)-like algorithm in a staggered grid system. Constitutive models involving turbulent mixing, pressure drop, and vapor generation are employed to simulate key phenomena in subchannel-scale analyses. ESCOT is parallelized by a domain decomposition scheme that involves both radial and axial decomposition to enable highly parallelized execution. The ESCOT solutions are validated through the applications to various experiments which include CNEN $4{\times}4$, Weiss et al. two assemblies, PNNL $2{\times}6$, RPI $2{\times}2$ air-water, and PSBT covering single/two-phase and unheated/heated conditions. The parameters of interest for validation include various flow characteristics such as turbulent mixing, spacer grid pressure drop, cross-flow, reverse flow, buoyancy effect, void drift, and bubble generation. For all the validation tests, ESCOT shows good agreements with measured data in the extent comparable to those of other subchannel-scale codes: COBRA-TF, MATRA and/or CUPID. The execution performance is examined with a mini-sized whole core consisting of 89 fuel assemblies and for an OPR1000 core. It turns out that it is about 1.5 times faster than a subchannel code based on the two-fluid three field model and the axial domain decomposition scheme works as well as the radial one yielding a steady-state solution for the OPR1000 core within 30 s with 104 processors.
Vortex-induced vibrations of a yawed flexible cylinder near a plane boundary are numerically investigated at a Reynolds number Ren= 500 based on normal component of freestream velocity. Free to oscillate in the in-line and cross-flow directions, the cylinder with an aspect ratio of 25 is pinned-pinned at both ends at a fixed wall-cylinder gap ratio G/D = 0.8, where D is the cylinder diameter. The cylinder yaw angle (α) is varied from 0° to 60° with an increment of 15°. The main focus is given on the influence of α on structural vibrations, flow patterns, hydrodynamic forces, and IP (Independence Principle) validity. The vortex shedding pattern, contingent on α, is parallel at α=0°, negatively-yawed at α ≤ 15° and positively-yawed at α ≥ 30°. In the negatively- and positively-yawed vortex shedding patterns, the inclination direction of the spanwise vortex rows is in the opposite and same directions of α, respectively. Both in-line and cross-flow vibration amplitudes are symmetric to the midspan, regardless of α. The RMS lift coefficient CL,rms exhibits asymmetry along the span when α ≠ 0°, maximum CL,rms occurring on the lower and upper halves of the cylinder for negatively- and positively-yawed vortex shedding patterns, respectively. The IP is well followed in predicting the vibration amplitudes and drag forces for α ≤ 45° while invalid in predicting lift forces for α ≥ 30°. The vortex-shedding frequency and the vibration frequency are well predicted for α = 0° - 60° examined.
