  • In the word, there is varied types of vibration, and these affect the mechanical industry. In this paper is plates with two parallel sides fixed. Electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is one of the optical nondestructive testing technique. By using the ESPI, vibration modes for excitation point, a/b(ratio of longuitudinal and lateral length), and kind of specimen are measured and compared qualitatively with theoritical analysis that Warburton proposed.

  • The present study is conducted to investigate the local heat/mass transfer characteristics for flow through perforated plates. A naphthalene sublimation method is employed to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate. Two parallel perforated plates are arranged for the two different ways: staggered and shifted in one direction. The experiments are conducted for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 6.0, for gap distance between the perforated plates of 0.33 to 10 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 5,000 to 12,000. The result shows that the high transfer region is formed at stagnation region and at the mid-line of the adjacent impinging jets due to secondary vortices and flow acceleration to the effusion hole. For flows through the perforated plates, the mass transfer rates on the surface of the effusion plate are about six to ten times higher than for effusion cooling alone (single perforated plate). More uniform and higher heat/mass transfer characteristic is obtained in overall region with small gap between two perforated plates.

  • The acoustic absorption of a multiple layer perforated plate system is very good near the resonance frequency region, while it has been regarded as a demerit that its frequency bandwidth is considerably narrow. In order to overcome such a demerit, the parallel perforated plates with different porosities are proposed. The sound absorption of such system composed of a parallel perforated plate is calculated by an equivalent electroatoustic circuit approach and validated by comparing the calculated absorption coefficients with those measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method. The sound absorptive characteristics and performance of parallel perforated plate systems are discussed from a standpoint of frequency bandwidth related with sound absorption.

  • Cooling characteristics of a parallel channel with protruding heat sources using convection and conduction heat transfer are studied numerically. A two-dimensional model has been developed for numerical prediction of transient, compressible, viscous, laminar flow, and conjugate heat transfer between parallel plates with uniform block heat sources. The finite volume method is used to solve the problem. The assembly consists of two channels formed by two covers and one printed circuit board which has three uniform heat source blocks. Six different cooling methods are considered to find out the most efficient cooling method in a given geometry and heat sources. The velocity and temperature fields of cooling medium, the temperature distribution along the block surface, and the maximum temperature in each block are obtained. The results are compared to examine the cooling characteristics of the different cooling methods.

  • The flatness is the most important nature for the surface plates. For finding such a flatnes a surface plate is surveyed along a number of straight lines parallel to the edges of plate which form a grid pattern. Next the variations in height of the grid points are measured relative to a datum point. the relation between the number of such grid points and the flatuness of a measured surface plate is formulated in this study. In addtion it is found that the grid-point-numbers suggested by KS B 5254 and JIS B 7513 have very poor reliability for estimation of flatness incase of the surface plates with poor original flatness.

  • The structural intensity fields of rectangular plates with single cutout and multiple cutouts are studied. The main objective is to examine the effect of the presence of cutouts on the flow pattern of vibrational energy from the source to the sink on a rectangular plate. The computation of the structural intensity is carried out using the finite element method. The magnitude of energy flow is significantly larger at the edges on the plate near the cutout boundary parallel to the energy flow. The effects of cutouts with different shape and size at different positions on structural intensity of a rectangular plate are presented and discussed. A case study on a plate with two cutouts is also presented.

  • A unified third-order laminate plate theory that contains classical, first-order and third-order theories as special cases is presented. Analytical solutions using the Navier and L$\acute{e}$vy solution procedures are presented. The Navier solutions are limited to simply supported rectangular plates while the L$\acute{e}$vy solutions are restricted to rectangular plates with two parallel edges simply supported and other two edges having arbitrary combination of simply supported, clamped, and free boundary conditions. Numerical results of bending and vibration for a number of problems are discussed in the second part of the paper.
