  • Optimality Criteria algorithm based on the derivation of reciprocal approximations has been applied to structural optimization of large-scale structures. However, required computational cost for the serial analysis algorithm of large-scale structures consisting of a large number of degrees of freedom and members is too high to be adopted in the solution process of O.C. algorithm Thus, parallel version of O.C. algorithm on the network of personal computers is presented in this Paper.   • In the field of structural analysis so-called substructure methods have been applied extensively to solve large and complex structures by splitting them up in substructures. This substructure method is applicable to electromagnetic field analysis and highly parallel in nature. In this paper substructure FEM is implemented for magnetostatic field computation using parallel computer consists of many transputers. Parallel substructure method is a promising tool as a solution of not only compuation speed problem but also memory problem.

  • The IPSAP which is a finite element analysis program has been developed for high parallel performance computing. This program consists of various analysis modules - stress, vibration and thermal analysis module, etc. The M orthogonal block Lanczos algorithm with shiftinvert transformation is used for solving eigenvalue problems in the vibration module. And the multifrontal algorithm which is one of the most efficient direct linear equation solvers is applied to factorization and triangular system solving phases in this block Lanczos iteration routine. In this study, the performance enhancement procedures of the IPSAP are composed of the following stages: 1) communication volume minimization of the factorization phase by modifying parallel matrix subroutines. 2) idling time minimization in triangular system solving phase by partial inverse of the frontal matrix and the LCM (least common multiple) concept.

  • This paper studies a class of in-parallel manipulators with special geometry where the forward displacement analysis problem can be solved easier than the fully parallel manipulators. Three horizontal links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs(Degrees of Freedom), which are one degree of orientational freedom and two degrees of translatory freedom. Three vertical links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs, which are two degrees of orientational freedom and one degree of translatory freedom. The main advantages of this manipulator, compared with the Stewart platform type, are the capability to produce pure rotation and to predict the motion of the moving platform easily. Since this manipulator has simple kinematic characteristics compared with the Stewart platform, controlling in real-time is possible due to less computational burden. The purpose of this investigation is to develope an analytical method and systematic method to analyze the basic kinematics of the manipulator. The basic kinematic equations of the manipulator are derived and simulation is carried out to show the performance of the mechanism.

  • This paper presents inverse kinematics and workspace analysis of a planar three degree-of-freedom (DOF) parallel manipulator. Furthermore, optimization problem of the manipulator is presented. The manipulator adopts PRR (Prismatic-Revolute-Revolute) mechanism and the prismatic actuators are fixed to the base. This leads to a reduction of the inertia of the moving links and hence enables it to move with high speed. The actuators are linear electric motors. First, the mechanism based on the geometry of the manipulator is introduced. Second, a workspace analysis is performed. Finally, design optimization is carried out to have large workspace. The proposed approach can be applied to the design optimization of various three DOF parallel manipulators in order to maximize their workspace. The performance of mechanism is improved and satisfies the requirements of workspace to align micro-components.

비구면 평행연삭에서의 휠구면형상 창성오차 (Wheel curve generation error of aspheric grinding in parallel grinding method)

  • This paper presents a geometrical error analysis of wheel curve generation method for micro aspheric surface machining using parallel grinding method. In aspheric grinding, wheel wear in process is crucial parameter for profile error of the ground surface. To decrease wheel weal parallel grinding method is adopted. Wheel and work piece (Tungsten carbide) contact point changes during machining process. In truing process of the wheel radius is determined by the angle and distance between wheel and truer. Wheel radius error is predominantly affected by vertical deviation between the wheel rotation center and the truer center Simulation for vertical error and wheel radius error shows same tendency that expected by geometrical analysis. Experimental results show that the analysis of curve generation method matches with simulations and wheel radius errors.

An Interleaving Scheme for DC-link Current Ripple Reduction in Parallel-Connected Generator Systems

  • This paper presents an interleaving scheme for parallel-connected power systems to reduce the DC-link current ripple. A paralleled generator system generates current ripple by the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of each generator side converter. The current ripple in the DC-link degrades the efficiency of the whole generator system and decreases the lifetime of the DC-link capacitors. To mitigate these issues, the expression of the DC-link current is derived by a double-integral Fourier analysis while considering the modulation schemes. Optimized interleaving angles for the parallel generator system are obtained based on an analysis to minimize the dominant current harmonics component. Finally, the proposed interleaving scheme reduces the RMS value of the DC-link current ripple. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed interleaving scheme.

Accelerating Group Fusion for Ligand-Based Virtual Screening on Multi-core and Many-core Platforms

  • The performance issues of screening large database compounds and multiple query compounds in virtual screening highlight a common concern in Chemoinformatics applications. This study investigates these problems by choosing group fusion as a pilot model and presents efficient parallel solutions in parallel platforms, specifically, the multi-core architecture of CPU and many-core architecture of graphical processing unit (GPU). A study of sequential group fusion and a proposed design of parallel CUDA group fusion are presented in this paper. The design involves solving two important stages of group fusion, namely, similarity search and fusion (MAX rule), while addressing embarrassingly parallel and parallel reduction models. The sequential, optimized sequential and parallel OpenMP of group fusion were implemented and evaluated. The outcome of the analysis from these three different design approaches influenced the design of parallel CUDA version in order to optimize and achieve high computation intensity. The proposed parallel CUDA performed better than sequential and parallel OpenMP in terms of both execution time and speedup. The parallel CUDA was 5-10x faster than sequential and parallel OpenMP as both similarity search and fusion MAX stages had been CUDA-optimized.

  • Recently, the flat display modules such as plasma or TFT-LCD employ thin crystallized panels which are normally weak to high level transient mechanical energy inputs. As a result, anti-shock performance is one of the most important design specifications for TFT-LCD modules. However, most of large display module designs are generated based on engineers own experiences. Also, a large-scale analysis to evaluate complex material and structural behaviors is one of interesting topic in diverse engineering and scientific fields. The utilization of massively parallel processors has also been a recent trend of high performance computing. The objective of this paper is to introduce a parallel process system which consists of general purpose finite element analysis solver as well as parallelized PC cluster. The parallel processing system is constructed using thirty-two processing elements and the finite element program is developed by adopting hierarchical domain decomposition method. In order to verify the efficiency of the established system, an impact analysis on thin and complex sub-parts of flat display modules is performed. The evaluation results showed a good agreement with the corresponding reference solutions, and thus, the parallel process system seems to be a useful tool fur the complex structural analysis such as IT related products.

  • An implicit finite element implementation for Leblond's transformation plasticity constitutive equations, which are widely used in welded steel structure is proposed in the framework of parallel computing. The implementation is based upon the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient and hyper elastic formulation. We examine the efficiency of parallel computation for the finite element analysis of a welded structure using domain-wise multi-frontal solver.
