  • Null tests using two different kinds of null corrector have been discussed. A parabolic mirror was used as a surface under test. After designing, encoding, and fabricating the CGH (computer generated hologram), the null CGH test was performed. An autocollimation test was also performed using a flat mirror. The reliability of the null CGH test has been discussed by comparing the result obtained by both null tests.

  • This study examined a method for designing the optical cavity of a non-dispersive infrared gas detector. The infrared gas detector requires an optical cavity design to lengthen the ray path. However, the optical cavity with multiple reflecting surfaces has off-axis aberration due to the characteristics of the reflecting optical system. The rays were parallelized by using the off-axis parabolic mirror to easily increase the ray path and eliminate off-axis aberration so that the rays are admitted to the effective area of the infrared detector uniformly. A prototype of an infrared gas detector was produced with the designed optical cavity to confirm the performance.

  • Wavefront aberrations of a laser beam that was reflected from an off-axis parabolic (OAP) mirror were measured to evaluate the optical performance of the OAP mirror. For a diamond turned OAP mirror, the root-mean-square (rms) value of higher-order aberrations was only $0.03{\mu}m$ for the laser beam size of about 34 mm. The other OAP mirror which was polished at a domestic company had the rms value of higher-order aberrations of $2.07{\mu}m$ for the same beam size. Although the diamond turned OAP mirror was well fabricated to have a small amount of aberrations, the aberrations were induced by the misalignment of the OAP mirror. Especially, 0 degree astigmatism increased with the sensitivity of $0.372{\mu}m/mrad$ when the OAP mirror was tilted in the tangential plane, which agreed well with the calculated results using a commercial ray tracing software.

  • Parabolic almninium mlITOr of m.5('||'&'||'cent; 50 nun) was fabncated by a diamond tummg machine. Computer generated hologram (CGH) for the test of parabolic mirror was encoded by binary phase hologram Approximation of curved fringe to line was made by staircase encoding. After fringe data 1ransformed mto a Post Scnpt file. magnified master CGH was printed by a laser printer, and then it reduced to the photographIc film. Parabolic mirror was tested by Twyman-Green interferometer with CGH at VIewing arm. Its experimental result was compared with those of surface profile and auto-collimatIon test, and then the errors were analyzed.

  • In order to analyze the performance comparison of dish solar collector with mirror arrays and receiver shapes, the radiative heat flux distribution inside the cavity receiver is numerically investigated. The solar irradiation reflected by dish solar collector is traced using the Monte-Carlo method. Five different dish solar collectors and three different cavity receivers are considered. A parabolic-shaped perfect mirror of which diameter is 1.5 m is considered as a reference dish solar collector and four different arrays of twelve identical parabolic-shaped mirror facets of which diameter are 0.4 m are used. Their reflecting areas, which are $1.5\;m^2$, are the same. Three different cavity receiver shapes are dome, conical, and cylindrical. In addition, the radiative properties of the concentrating surfaces can vary the thermal performance of the cavity receiver so that variation of the surface reflectivity of each mirror is considered. Based on the calculation, the design information of dish solar collector for producing the electric power can be obtained. The results show that the dome type has the best performance in receiver shapes and the 2AND4 INLINE has the best performance in mirror arrays except perfect mirror.

  • The thermal performance comparisons of the dish solar collector system are numerically investigated with mirror arrays and receiver shapes. In order to compare the performances of the dish solar collector systems, six different mirror arrays and four different receiver shapes are considered and the radiative heat flux distribution on the inside of the receiver is analyzed. A parabolic-shaped perfect mirror of which diameter is 1.5 m is considered as a reference of the mirror arrays. Five different mirror arrays of twelve identical parabolic -shaped mirror facets of which diameter are 0.4 m are proposed in this study. Their reflecting areas, which are 1.5 $m^2$, are the same. Four different receiver shapes are a dome, a conical, a cylindrical and a unicorn type. The solar irradiation reflected by mirrors is traced using the Monte-Carlo method. In addition, the radiative properties of the mirror surface can vary the thermal performance of the dish solar collector system so that the effects of the surface reflectivity and the surface absorptivity are considered. Based on the calculation, the design information of dish solar collector system for producing the electric power can be obtained. • The radiative heat loss from a receiver of a dish solar collector is numerically investigated. The dish solar collector considered in this paper consists of a receiver and multi-faceted mirrors. In order to investigate the performance comparison of dish solar collectors, six different mirror arrays and four different receivers are considered. A parabolic- shaped perfect mirror of which diameter is 1.40 m is considered as the reference for the mirror arrays. The other mirror arrays which consist of twelve identical parabolic-shaped mirror facets of which diameter are 0.405 m are suggested for comparison. Their reflecting areas, which are 1.545 $m^{2}$, are the same. Four different receiver shapes are a conical, a dome, a cylindrical, and a unicorn type. The radiative properties of the mirror surfaces and the receiver surfaces may vary the thermal performance of the dish solar collector so that various surface properties are considered. In order to calculate the radiative heat loss in the receiver, two kinds of methods are used. The Net Radiation Method that is based on the radiation heat balance on the surface is used to calculate the radiation heat transfer rate from the inside surface of the receiver to the environment. The Monte-Carlo Method that is the statistical approach is adopted to predict the radiation heat transfer rate from the reflector to the receiver. The collector efficiency is defined as the results of the optical efficiency and the receiver efficiency. Based on the calculation, the unicorn type has the best performance in receiver shapes and the STAR has the best performance in mirror arrays except the perfect mirror.

  • The autotstigmatic null lens system is designed and constructed for the fabrication of a parabolic mirror with the diameter of 450 mm(f/2.7). And the measurement reliability is also analyzed theoretically by means of the tolerancing technique using lens design software(CODE V). From this analysis, we can precisely fabricate a parabolic mirror with the large diameter of 450 mm(f/2.7). Meanwhile, in order to confirm the fabrication results by the autostigmatic method, the mirror surface is tested again by an autocollimating method that uses only a plane mirror without any null lens.

  • The current study presents experimental research on a parabolic trough collector with tube and cavity receivers. The primary concentrating parabolic reflector is designed for an aperture area of 2×2 m2 with mirror-polished stainless steel sheet reflectors. The cavity receiver consists of a compound parabolic secondary reflector and a copper tube. Both the conventional tube receiver and the cavity receiver tube are coated with black powder. The experiments are carried out to compare the efficiency of the cavity receiver with the tube receiver for fluid temperature rise, thermal efficiency, and overall losses. The experiments showed significantly higher fluid temperature rise and overall efficiency and lower thermal losses for the cavity receiver compared to the tube receiver within the parameters explored in this study.

  • The design of a concentration system for a solar side-pumped slab laser was investigated. The side size of the slab laser medium is 2 mm × 20 mm. Based on the principle of the edge ray, a secondary concentrating system consisting of a rectangular parabolic mirror (RPM) and a rectangular dielectric-filled compound parabolic concentrator (RDCPC) was demonstrated. The focal length of RPM is 1200 mm and the size is 734 mm × 2000 mm. The outlet size of the RDCPC is 2 mm × 20 mm. The concentration effect was analyzed by using Tracepro optical software. The results showed that the concentration efficiency reached 81.3% and the uniformity of the spot was 91.4% after optimization. This design of concentration system is of great reference value for a solar side-pumped slab laser.
