  • Purpose: Pink gingival esthetic especially on the anterior teeth has been an important success criterion in implant-supported restoration. Inter-implant papillae are a critical factor for implant esthetics, and various techniques for inter-implant papilla reconstruction have been introduced. The aim of this study is to suggest and evaluate a surgical technique for reconstructing inter-implant papillae. Methods: A 28-year-old man had an implant placed on the #13 and #14 area. Four months after implant placement, a second stage surgery was planned for inter-implant papilla reconstruction. At the time of the abutment connection, I-type incisions were performed on the #13i & #14i area followed by full-thickness flap elevation and connection of a healing abutment on underlying fixtures without suture. Results: Two weeks after the second stage implant surgery, soft tissue augmentation between the two implants was achieved. Conclusions: I-shaped incisions for papilla reconstruction performed during the second stage implant surgery were useful for inter-implant papilla reconstruction and showed a good esthetic result.

  • Objective: Forced eruption has been proposed for the reconstruction of deficient bone and soft tissue. The aim of this study was to examine the changes in the alveolar ridge width and the vertical levels of the interproximal bone and papilla following forced eruption. Methods: Patients whose hopeless maxillary anterior teeth were expected to undergo severe bone resorption and soft tissue recession upon extraction were recruited. In addition, patients whose maxillary anterior teeth required forced eruption for restoration due to tooth fracture or dental caries were included. Before and after forced eruption, the interproximal bone height was measured by radiographic analysis, and changes in the alveolar ridge width and the interproximal papilla height were measured with an acrylic stent. Results: This prospective study demonstrated that the levels of the interproximal alveolar bone and papilla were significantly increased by 1.36 mm and 1.09 mm, respectively, in the vertical direction. However, the alveolar ridge width was significantly reduced by an average of 0.67 mm in the buccolingual direction. The changes in the level of the interproximal alveolar bone and papilla were positively correlated. Conclusions: Although the levels of the interproximal bone and papilla were significantly increased, the alveolar ridge width was significantly decreased following forced eruption. There was a modest positive and significant correlation between the changes in the height of the interproximal alveolar bone and the papilla. Based on our findings, modification of vertical forced eruption should be considered when augmentation of the alveolar ridge width is required.

  • Statement of problem: It is very important to establish the suitable position for artificial maxillary anterior teeth and the orientation of occlusal plane in fabrication of the complete dentures. Incisive papilla has been considered the most useful anatomic landmark in the arranging of a maxillary anterior artificial teeth. Purpose: To determine correct position of upper anterior artificial teeth in complete denture patients, relationship of incisive papilla, intercanine line, occlusal plane were evaluated in Korean adults. Materials and Method: Maxillary casts were made in 60 Korean dentate subjects. Each cast was mounted in Hanau modular articulator using Hanau spring bow. Then, anatomic landmarks were determined in each cast. Distance from central incisor to incisive papilla, distance from incisive papilla to intercanine line and discrepancies between frankfurt plane and occlusal plane were measured and analysed. Results: 1. The mean distance between the posterior point of incisive papilla and the incisal edge of central incisor was 11.20 mm (in male 11.77 mm, in female 10.55 mm) and there was no significant difference in measured values between male and female 2. The mean distance between the posterior point of incisive papilla and intercanine line was 2.52 mm (Male 2.57 mm, Female 2.35 mm) and there were no significant differencies in measured values between male and female 3. The mean discripancy between the Frankfurt plane and the occlusal plane were 9. 75 degree (Male 9.81 degree, Female 9.55 degree), and there was no significant difference in measured values between left and right sides.

  • The anatomy of the renal papilla and pelvis of the bat(Pipistrellus abramus abramus Temminck) and their ultrastructure of the epithelium has been studied by means of light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The bats were captured at Ondal cave located in Yangchun-Myun, Tanyang-Kun, Chungchongpuk-Do, Korea in the active(July) and hibernating(January) phases. A conical renal papilla with several papillary foramina at the apex was curved toward the ureter. At the margin of the funnel-shaped renal pelvis, the fornix extended deeply into the kidney parenchyme was formed between the outer zone of the medulla and the cortex. The epithelium of the papilla covered the inner zone of the medulla. The epithelium of the fornix medially overlayed the outer zone of the medulla, and laterally the cortex. The surface epithelium of the papilla was simple columnar in shape with the scanty organelles and the short microvilli on their luminal surface. The fornix was Jined with $1{\sim}2$ cell layered squamous epithelium. On the medial surface of the fornix, two types of the superficial epithelial cells were identified; one had numerous short microvilli and the other had the microplicae and plaques on their luminal surface. The lateral surface of the fornix lined with the epithelial cells showed microridges and plaques on the luminal surface. The epithelial cells on the medial and lateral surfaces of the fornix were similar to their internal ultrastructures. The pelvic epithelium was a typical transitional type, which was composed of a layer of basal cells, one or two layers of intermediate cells, and a layer of superficial(facet) cells. The fusiform vesicles were observed in the cytoplasm of the intermediate and facet cells. There were no noticeable morphological changes in the epithelium of the papilla, fornix and pelvis except the medial epithelium of the fornix in the hibernating cycle. The microvillar cells were more numerous in the hibernating phase than in the active phase. The morphology, of the renal papilla and fornix of bats, indicates that a functional relationship may exist between the pelvic urine and the renal parenchyme.

  • The arrangement of anterior artificial teeth is an important factor on the esthetics in the construction of complete dentures and prostheses. During construction of the complete denture the position of maxillary central incisor plays an important role in the arrangements of artificial teeth. The proper position of maxillary central incisor provides natural appearance of anterior teeth and the anterior reference point of occlusal plane. Many methods have been utilized to eatablish the position of the maxillary central incisor in complete denture prosthodontics. However, there has not been provided for the reference for Korean yet. This study was aimed to extablish a guide for the position of the maxillary central inciosr in Koreans. The horizontal and vertical distance between the maxillary central incisor and incisive papilla in Koreans were measured. 1. The mean value of horizontal distance from the maxillary central incisor to the incisive papilla had significant sexual difference, The average distance was 12.648mm in male and 11.385mm in female. 2. The horizontal distance of the incisive papilla had sexual difference, the average distance was 6.182mm in male and 5.622mm in female. 3. The vertical distance from the maxillary central incisor to the incisive papilla had not sexual difference, the average distance was 7.21mm. 4. • Objectives: The hair follicle is composed of more than 20 kinds of cells, and mesoderm derived dermal papilla cells and keratinocytes cooperatively contribute hair growth via Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. We are to investigate β-catenin expression and regulatory mechanism by CBD in alopecia hair tissues and dermal papilla cells. Methods: We performed structural and anatomical analyses on alopecia patients derived hair tissues using microscopes. Pharmacological effect of CBD was evaluated by β-catenin expression using RT-PCR and immunostaining experiment. Results: Morphological deformation and loss of cell numbers in hair shaft were observed in alopecia hair tissues. IHC experiment showed that loss of β-catenin expression was shown in inner shaft of the alopecia hair tissues, indicating that β-catenin expression is a key regulatory function during alopecia progression. Consistently, β-catenin expression was decreased in testosterone or PMA treated dermal papilla cells, suggesting that those treatments are referred as a model on molecular mechanism of alopecia using dermal papilla cells. RT-PCR and immunostaining experiments showed that β-catenin expression was decreased in RNA level, as well as decreased β-catenin protein might be resulted from ubiquitination. However, CBD treatment has no changes in gene expression including β-catenin, but the decreased β-catenin expression by testosterone or PMA was restored by CBD pretreatment, suggesting that potential regulatory effect on alopecia induction of testosterone and PMA. Conclusion: CBD might have a modulating function on alopecia caused by hormonal or excess of signaling pathway, and be a promising application for on alopecia treatment.

  • Objectives : Puerariae Radix extracts are a rich source of isoflavones that affect the activity of hepatic antioxidant enzymes. However, the effect of these extracts on hair growth in human dermal papilla (DP) cells is unknown. The purpose of this study is to compare the effects between juice and water extracts of Puerariae Radix on the mRNA expression levels of hair growth-related genes in dermal papilla (DP) cells. Methods : The antioxidant activity of juice and water extracts of Puerariae Radix was analyzed using an ABTS assay. The cytotoxicity was analyzed using the MTS assay in DP cells. mRNA expression levels of hair growth-related genes in dermal papilla (DP) cells were analyzed using quantitative RT-PCR analysis. Results : Juice and water extracts of Puerariae Radix showed strong antioxidant activity. The cytotoxicity was confirmed to be higher in the juice extract than the water extract, using the MTS assay on DP cells. The mRNA expression levels of CTNNB1, FGF7, and BMP6 were significantly increased after treatment with water extract, whereas the juice extract did not affect the expression of hair growth-related genes. Conclusions : Our study provides evidence that water extract of Puerariae Radix is effective at inducing hair growth, by promoting the mRNA expression levels of hair growth-related genes. Also in the future, studies should be conducted to investigate the effects of Puerariae radix extracts on the various hair growth mechanisms of dermal papilla cells.
