Rapid Prototyping of Head-of-Bed Angle Measurement System using Open-Source Hardware (오픈소스하드웨어를 이용한 침상머리각도 측정 시스템의 래피드 프로토타이핑)

  • When the study on the relationship between the Head-of-Bed (HOB) angle and ventilator-associated pneumonia is performed, the fact that the HOB angle can only be measured intermittently imposes a significant limitation on the study. Therefore, there has been demand for the development of a device that can measure the HOB angle continuously. In this paper, we propose the rapid prototyping of an HOB measurement system using open-source hardware and software. The proposed system helps to maintain the HOB angle at a particular angle by displaying the angle and helps the medical study of pneumonia patients by enabling continuous data acquisition. Firstly, we eliminate the process of making an MCU board by utilizing an open-source hardware mbed LPC1768. Secondly, we reduce the software development time by using libraries and hence enabling the easy use of peripherals. Thirdly, for rapid prototyping, we build the enclosure of the proposed system using a 3D printer. The proposed system can be attached and detached to and from a bed. Therefore, we can attach it to the bed of a patient for whom measurement of the HOB angle is necessary. Finally, we check the measurement performance and the validity of the proposed system through an experiment utilizing an incremental encoder.

  • This paper presents implementation of rapid control prototype (RCP) for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) using a digital signal processor (DSP) and the PLECS software. By utilization of auto code generation function in the PLECS, a current vector control algorithm for a PMSM drive system using a DSP as a control processor can be developed more efficiently. In this paper, a background of a model based design (MBD) and real time control are reviewed. Also, commercial RCP products compatible with DSP boards are introduced. At the end of the paper, experimental implementation of RCP for a PMSM drive is presented.

An RP Data Exchange Model Based on STEP (STEP을 이용한 신속조형용 설계정보 변환체계)

  • One of the biggest problems of rapid prototyping(RP) technologies lies in their standard file format for CAD data exchange. Current methods using the de facto industry standard 'STL'have at times resulted in problems such as accuracy, redundancy, and integrity. In this paper we propose a STEP based data exchange framework for rapid prototyping systems. In this paradigm of data exchange, STEP models can be imported and converted into faceted B-rep. solid models for visualization and 2-D layer data for RP. Also an STL model, on the other hand, can be converted into a faceted B-rep. STEP model and exported as a new data exchange model with RP information.

  • Generally, the use of robots in manufacturing industry has been increased during the past decade. GMA(Gas Metal Are) welding is an actively growing area and many new procedures have been developed for use with high strength alloys. One of the basic requirement for welding applications is to study relationships between process parameters and bead geometry. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of neural network and multiple regression methods in the prediction of bead geometry for GMA welding process and to develop an intelligent system that enables the prediction of bead geometry using Rapid Prototyping(RP) in order to employ the robotic GMA welding processes. This system developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK, could be effectively implemented not only for estimating bead geometry, but also employed to monitor and control the bead geometry in real time.

  • This study focuses on designing a new gluing system for the FM-I (Freeform Master I), which is a new rapid prototyping machine using a sheet lamination technique. To design the system, we firstly verify the required parameters of the proposed gluing system. Then we analyze the electro-magnetic system by using ANSYS and the mechanical system by using numerical methods. The gluing system can contribute to reduce the cost of the machine since it can be applied to low cost materials such as a plain paper.

  • Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies are mainly performed by layered manufacturing (LM) process which manufactures 3D physical objects by depositing 2D sections in a direction. Thus, deformations are apt to occur in overhanging area of the RP processed part. Also, excessive adhesion between part and platform of the RP apparatus is generated. In order to prevent these problems, most of the RP technologies adopt support structure. Main element to support a part in the support structure is strand. In actual field, however, the number of strand is determined by the software operating reference guide or RP system operator's experience. In this paper, a methodology to determine the optimal strand spacing is presented through experiments and measurements for the SL part deformation by change of strand spacing and part weight in the support structure of the stereolithography.

  • The FD process is analogous to the direct piston extrusion process where the cold feed filament acts as a piston extruding the molten filament from the heated liquefier through a nozzle. The extruded filament is deposited on top of futureless platform, where the liquefier and the nozzle move in X and Y direction control by computer based on the part geometry. After the first layer, the Z platform indexes down and the next layer get deposited on top of the first layer. the layer by layer building process introduces surface problem. This paper describes effect of slice interval of the parts built by fused deposition modelling rapid prototyping system.

  • In any rapid prototyping process, the layer by layer building process introduces an area error between the staircase and the surface line specified by the computer-aided design model. This affects the dimensional accuracy as well as the surface finish for different Road Widths. This paper describes a methodology for computing the area error for any Road Width by the fused deposition modelling system. This technique can be applied to determine the best Road Width of the part, based on the minimum area error. This technique is verified by comparing the results with the experimental measurements of the area error with Road Widths.

  • STEP is a neutral model for exchanging CAD modelbetween different CAD systms. The paper presents a laser path contour generation for rapid prototyping originated form STEP format files without using any tools nor libraries for STEP data manipulation. Polygons are generated from every point on the layer of given thickness, which are the intersections of layer plane and edges stored in entity tables. Curves are approximated with polygons whitin segment tolerance limit in order to cover sculptured surfaces. With the advantage of less data loss in direct slicing over STL formats, the system developed in this work shows a good potential to provide data share with various CAD systems including RP data preparation.

Geometric Modeling of Honeycomb Structural Geometry for Solid Freeform Fabrication (신속성형기술 전용 벌집구조 형상 모델링 기술 개발)

  • Solid freeform fabrication technology, widely known as rapid prototyping an rapid tooling, can create physical part directly from digital model by accumulating layers of a given material. Providing a tremendous flexibility of a part geometry that they can fabricate, these technologies present a opportunity or the creation of new products that can not be made with existing technologies. For this to be possible, however, various design environments including different fabrication processes needs to be considered at the time of design, and finding an appropriate design solution for the new product by combining necessary design communications become increasingly complex as environmental condition become diverse. This paper proposes a geometric modeling paradigm for design and fabrication of a new product, honeycomb structural geometry.
