The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and functions of radio media and its imprecations. In doing so, the researcher attempted to analyze the text of the radio documentary, which illuminated "Seosan Sim's Sorigil," Pansori Jung-go-je. Second, the radio media enabled to record the upbringing of a person through an oral interview. Finally, the radio medium plays a role in promoting the sound of Pansori academically. This study confirms that the radio medium functions as a means of recording and ascertaining Pansori, a traditional art culture and an intangible cultural heritage, by utilizing the unique characteristics of sound storage media.
The purpose of this research is to investigate appropriate usage of pansori's method of breathing, sound making, and resonance in order to develop actor's aesthetic voice. Today's theatre no longer see inter-cultural approach as new or experimental, but see it as a part of global current. Actors are required to integrate some global-ness into their acting. It's not enough, however, for actors to equip some cosmopolitan sensibility. More important thing is that they should be able to integrate one's own culture and aesthetic into their performance. Only after acquiring one's own cultural identity, it is possible to step into inter-cultural work. It is fundamental, therefore, for actors to assimilate traditional movement and aesthetic voice. It's been known that traditional Korean voice traits are well preserved in Pansori. In this paper, based upon well-known theories and practices of western voice training, pansori's principles and practices are utilized to bring a new aesthetic voice.
For western music there has been a volume of researches on music information analysis for automatic transcription or content-based music retrieval. But it is hard to find the similar research on Korean traditional music. In this paper we propose several algorithms to automatically analyze the structure of Korean traditional music 'Pansori'. The proposed algorithm automatically distinguishes between the 'sound' part and 'speech' part which are named 'sori' and 'aniri', respectively, using the ratio of phonetic and pause time intervals. For rhythm called 'jangdan' classification the algorithm makes the robust decision using the majority voting process based on template matching. Also an algorithm is suggested to detect the bar positions in the 'sori' part based on Kalman filter. Every proposed algorithm in the paper works so well enough for the sample music sources of 'Pansori' that the results may be used to automatically transcribe the 'Pansori'.
The objective of this study is to re-examine the theory of Pansori (Korean musical storytelling genre) originating in Chinese tale-song literature. The said theory, first presented by Kim Hak-ju, succeeded in confirming the common points and association between Pansori and the Chinese tale-song literature, but failed to present the supporting ground for proving that Pansori originated in the said Chinese genre by comparing the contents of works and their performance type. In actuality, it was confirmed that the common factors of Pansori and the said Chinese genre naturally resulted from the performance situation where both genres should involve one singer chanting epics and simultaneously performing various roles and functions. In addition, it was confirmed that such identity of performance environment made the Pansori clown theory and the Gosagye tale-song(鼓詞系講唱) theory very similar. In addition, it was confirmed that, for one singer to present the wide spectrum of epic to the audience, the realistic description was the main part of literary style of both tale-song literature and Pansori, and furthermore it was revealed that, in the literary style of both tale-song literature and Pansori, the mixed use of time and temporal penetration were free. If a long performance of musical storytelling can be conceptualized in terms of 'tale-song' or 'oral epic', the Chinese tale-song literature and Pansori had similarity in the bigger frame of 'tale-song' or 'oral epic' and yet developed to have their own features.
Youngsan is generally known as Pansori Danga(短歌). However, the contents of 'Yeongsan' in 『Songnamjabji』 are different. In 『Songnamjabji』, Cho Jaesam explained the contents related to 'Youngsan' using three kinds of poems: Shin Kwangsoo's poem, Baegho Imje's poem, Kim Myeongwon's poem. First, 'Ujo Youngsan' appears in Shin Kwangsoo's poem. Shin Kwangsoo wrote the (1750) when Yoo Jinhan's 『Manhwajib(晩華集)』(1754) was published. It is difficult to see the 'Ujo Youngsan', which appears in Shin Kwangsoo's poem written in a time when Pansori was not widely known, as the Pansori Danga. Second, Jo Jaesam called the music in Baegho Imje's poem 'Youngsan Dodeueum'. In 'Youngsan Dodeueum', flute and 'Dodeuli rhythm' were used. This fact is connected with , an instrumental music. , also a Buddhist term, continued to be used in the palace as well as among the people. Third, Cho Jaesam introduced Kim Myeongwon's poem in 'Yeongsan' part and called it 'Taryeong.' At that time, the term 'Taryeong' referred to both Pansori and Jeongga(正歌). Later, in the 19th century, 'Youngsan' was recorded as a term for the Danga to loosen the neck before Pansori began in earnest. In other words, the early 'Yeongsan' recorded in 『Songnamjabji』 was a Buddhist term, referring to the music of the upper class Seonbi, such as , Gasa(歌詞) and Sijo(時調). In 1855, when 『Songnamjabji』 was written, 'Youngsan' was used as a term used to refer to both Changbu-Music and Gagaek(歌客)-Music, mixed with the term 'Taryeong'. And as Pansori became popular, the term 'Taryeong' came to be called 'Pansori' and 'Youngsan' was used to refer to Pansori Danga. Therefore, all the records of 'Youngsan' should not be interpreted as Pansori Danga. This situation is closely related to religious and social change. The policy of worshipping Confucianism and suppressing Buddhism rejected the term 'Youngsan' which had a Buddhist meaning. In the middle of Joseon Dynasty, when Buddhism was suppressed, 'Youngsan' and 'Taryeong' were mixed. As Buddhism regrown in the late Joseon Dynasty, with the advent of Pansori, the term 'Youngsan' seems to be newly resettled in the sense of Danga. Pansori appeared in the 19th century and 'Yeongsan' was used as a Danga. And the reason should be regarded as this social and religious change.
The purpose of this paper is to find out the way of utilizing phrases of Chinese poetry in Manjeongje and its musical characteristics. To this end, the roles of phrases contained in the Pansori words were classified into five patterns: landscape description, strengthening of pleasant emotions, strengthening of sad emotions, wordplay, and combination of various poems. As a result of analysis, phrases quoted in sad mood part consist of slow rhythm of Jinyangjo and Jungmori, and sad melody of Gyemyun-gil and Jingyemyun tone; thus, both the rhythm and melody are expressed in accordance with the mood of poems. On the other hand, the melody in the landscape description parts, and the rhythm in the joyful feeling and wordplay parts showed the characteristics of determining the mood. In addition, when applying the analysis results to the perspective of Pansori composition, it is necessary to discover novel texts, apply to editorials, and study musical implementation suitable for the original mood in order to create more artistic Pansori.
This article is the second one of the continuous study that considering 'body' as important and researching bodies as 'literature-media': the phenomena and functions. The present writer first of all have paid attention to the study of the contrast between pansori and ballet to secure definite, historic and theoretical prospect of this continuous study. In the process, the Korean creative ballets based on Korean classic narratives were illuminated as the glocal culture contents. And then the necessity of citing Korean characteristic rhythm and tune was insisted to acquire the true individuality and identity(What is the reason Chunhyang dances?(I)). The solution is jangdan and chang of pansori. This article aimed the supplementation of detailed and actual arguments to strengthen and formulate the opinion. And then this article desired to estimate the way to improvement of Korean creative ballet by properly citing jangdan and chang with the actual application cases of Korean ballets. Until now, at least pansori have gotten a sort of visual effectiveness: simply be seen and heard as unusual constituent. Thus the necessity of pansori to work motions and choreography beyond the simple usages. Also the way to be extended generally through being refined by the partial applications.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the empirical elements of non-Korean traditional musicians in the process of Pansori music listening. 5 non-Korean traditional musicians who are not professionally trained Korean music were participated in this study. The data were collected in depth interviews and analyzed from modified ground theory method. The findings showed that the elements of performer's voice, Chang-bub, contents, Gosu's buk sound and Gosu's role evoked various physical, emotional reponses and thoughts in all listeners. Through these responses the listeners awared internal issues related to inner problems and positive intervention aroused inner feelings. Also, emotional responses and awareness were reorganized their negative emotion and resolved through the different dimension of Pansori music.
