  • Understanding of the impinging behavior of an electrically charged spray is essential in determining appropriate operating conditions for electro-spraying of paints, surface coating materials and insecticides. In the present work, as an initial step, the wall impact of an electrically charged droplet has been experimentally investigated. The charged drops were directed on the surface of a paraffin wax, and the impinging behavior was visualized and recorded using a CCD camera to identify the impingement regime. The spread-rebound boundary for the charged drop turned out to be smaller compared to that for an electrically neutral droplet under the same surface condition. The shift of the transition criterion is considered to be due to the discrepancy between the maximum spread ratio of the electrically charged droplet and that of the neutral droplet.

  • UV-curable resin has the properties of quick-drying, high productivity at low temperature, energy, space saving, solventless, non-polluting and low-stinking, and thus, UV-curing system has been widely used in the fields of printing inks, adhesives, paints and coating agents. This study has been executed to develop a new functionnal material by the polymerization induced phase separation. The results obtained were as follows. As for the curing properties of the monomer/prepolymer/alkyd resin blends, it was found out that there was a peak by the polymerization induced phase separation when measuring the changes of viscosity and elasticity. It was also found out that such polymerization phase separation occurred in case that the alkyd resin contents were 20wt% and 30wt% and not found at the contents of 40wt%. Therefore, it would be desirable to maintain the contents of alkyd resin at less than 30wt% in order to use the polymerization induced phase separation.

  • Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a rapidly developing field in environmental engineering. It has a great potential to cope with the increasing pollution in the air. The addition of a photocatalyst to ordinary building materials such as tiles, concrete, paints, creates environmental friendly materials by which air pollution or pollution of the surface itself can be controlled and diminished. This work reports the results of the laboratory research, especially carried out towards air purifying action and self-cleaning measurements. In particular the research was focused on the study of the photocatalytic behavior of industrially prepared tiles produced starting from commercial micro-sized $TiO_2$. Air purification action has been investigated through NOx degradation tests. On the contrary, the degradation of pollution at the surface, also called as self-cleaning action, is verified by the degradation of two different organic dyes: Rhodamine B (red color) and Metanil yellow (yellow).

  • The typical corrosion prevention method inside the steel upper box girder in a suspension bridge involves the use of paints. However, in an effort to reduce environmental impact and cost, the suspension portion of the Yeongjong Bridge, Korea utilizes dehumidification systems to control humidity and prevent corrosion inside its box girder. Maintaining a uniform humidity distribution at the proper level inside the box girder is critical to the successful corrosion control. In this study, the humidity and the resultant atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder of the Yeongjong Bridge was monitored. The corrosion rate of the steel inside the box girder was obtained using thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) corrosion sensors. Time-of-wetness (TOW) measurements and the deposition rates of atmospheric pollutants such as $Cl^{-}$ and $SO_{x}$ were also obtained. Classification of the atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder was evaluated according to ISO 9223. As a result, no corrosion was found in the upper box girder, indicating that the dehumidification system used in the Yeongjong Bridge is an effective corrosion control method.

  • Recently, with continuous developments in the field of materials science, graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a promising material with excellent electrical, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, which play important roles in most fields. Researchers have achieved considerable progress with graphene. Chitosan (CS) is a natural polymer that has been studied intensively owing to its specific formation, high chemical resistance, and excellent physical properties. These outstanding properties have led to its universal use in applications such as textile fabrics, tissue engineering, medicine and health, coatings, and paints. By combining the advantages of GO and CS, different types of promising materials can be obtained. This review discusses the preparation of GO-CS fibers, hydrogel and aerogel, and the applications of GO-CS nanocomposites. In addition, directions for future research on graphene material composites are discussed.

  • Many industrial products such as paints, ink and adhesives are composed of the ingredients of a mixture. In mixture experiments, the characteristics of quality(response) depends only on the proportions of the ingredients and does not depend on the total amount of the mixture. This article discusses the constrained mixture experimental design, the data analysis, and the optimum formulation of ingredients based on the two quality characteristics - taste and flavor. It IS shown that efficient designs can be constructed from D-optimal criterion. Special cubic models were selected as the final mixture response surfaces for both reponses. The desirability function was used for the optimization of the two responses.

  • This paper proposes a method using the straight line Hough transform(SLHT) that recognizes the position of DNA band images from the scanner. The method also detects and corrects automatically the leaning angle of the image. After binarization of a gray-scale DNA band images, the SLHT detects line components involved in the image and recognizes the position of the image using the cross paints of the line components assuming the image is in retangular shape. To improve efficiency of reading many IINA band images through the scanner, this method finds and corrects the leaning angle accurately as less than -t I degree.

  • Abrasive jet machining (AJM) has been traditionally used for removing rusts or paints. Nowadays, this is promising technology for micro bulk machining where brittle substrate materials are used. In order to get accurate details, masks such as metal, polymer or elastomer is inevitable. Among them, photo polymer which is sensitive to the light has been attractive for it's high accuracy using photolithography. In this research, SU-8 as a photo polymer is used since it is adequate for making thick mask. So, this paper describes how to make AJM masks using SU-8 with a photolithography process, and investigates the characteristics of SU-8 masks during AJM process. Also, an example of fabrication using AJM was shown.

  • During automotive painting, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with the paint solvents are emitted to the atmosphere. Most VOC emissions come from spraying operations via the use of solvent-based paints, as the spraybooth air picks up gaseous solvent compounds and overspray paint materials. The VOCs consist of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, alcohols, and glycolethers. Most VOCs (some hydrophilic VOCs are captured and retained in the water.) are captured by an adsorption system and thermally oxidized. In this paper, the processes involved in automotive painting and in VOC control are reviewed. The topics include: painting operations (briefly), the nature of VOCs, VOC-control processes (adsorption, absorption, biological removal, and thermal oxidation) and energy recovery from VOCs using a fuel reformer and a fuel cell, and the beneficial use of paint sludge.

  • Sometimes, it is more convenient to use paint-type and spray-type EM wave absorbers than bulk-type or sheet-type. Thus, in this paper, we prepared paint-type and spry-type EM wave absorbers. The proportion of ferrites to paints, particle size of magnetic material, and kinds of paint should be considered to prepare a superior paint-type EM wave absorber. There is no big gap between spray-type and paint-type in EM wave absorption of EM wave absorbers prepared with same composition.
