Conservation Treatment and the Development of a Relics Filling Pad to Maintain the Shape of a Doctor's Coat Worn by Seo Jae-pil, the National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 607 (국가등록문화재 제607호 서재필 진료가운 보존처리와 유물 충전재 개발)

  • A doctor's coat worn by Seo Jae-pil (1864-1951)-National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 607-was conserved with wet cleaning to remove thick wrinkles and brown stains that had been present for a long time. This paper also applied microscopic observation and infrared spectrophotometric analysis to obtain scientific investigation data on the cotton fabric of this doctor's coat. Information about Seo Jae-pil's time as a doctor, the process of changing his English name, and C.D.Williams & Co., which produced the medical coat, revealed that this doctor's coat was worn by Seo Jae-pil between 1892 and 1898 or 1926 and 1939. Additionally, this paper proposes a pad for filling relics that can protect the shape of modern and contemporary clothing, such as Seo Jae-pil's doctor's coat, for display at a museum site. Specifically, this research provides detailed information on the manufacturing of filling pads that can prevent damage to modern and contemporary jackets and coats so that they can be used in the cultural heritage field by developing filling materials for three-dimensional costume artifacts.

Design Requirement Analysis and Configuration Proposal of a Vertiport for Domestic Applications of the Urban Air Mobility (도심항공 모빌리티(UAM)의 국내 적용을 위한 수직이착륙장 설계 요구조건 분석 및 형상 제안)

  • In this paper, the design requirements was produced by analyzing domestic and foreign regulations of the vertical takeoff and landing site required to operate the urban air mobility (UAM) system in Korea and the size of the take-off and landing pads were defined, and the configuration of vertiport was proposed. First, for the metropolitan area with high population density, pilot locations of the vertical take-off and landing site were selected based on the demonstration routes suggested by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and analyzed the characteristics of each location and determined the number of possible installations of vertiport by measuring each site. After that, variables necessary for the operation of the vertical takeoff and landing area were set, and the hourly, daily, monthly aircraft operating cycle, the number of acceptable people, and efficiency were calculated according to the number of simultaneous operation and the number of stand. Finally, using CATIA, the configurations of the virtual vertiport was created by applying the design requirements.

Damage Cause Analysis of Concrete Sleepers for Sharp Curved Track on Urban Railway Bridge (도시철도 교량상 급곡선 자갈궤도용 콘크리트침목 손상원인 분석)

  • In this study, the causes of damage to the concrete sleepers in a ballast track with under sleeper pads attached to the base of the sleepers installed in the sharp curved track(R=180m) of the urban railway bridge were analyzed. The damage types of concrete sleepers were investigated, and the correlation with track irregularity was reviewed. Also, stress generated in the concrete sleeper was reviewed through structural analysis. As a result, most of the cracks of the sleepers occurred in the section with severe track irregularity. In addition, as a result of the analysis, the stress generated in the track components and the sleepers was found to be reduce in the fastening system using the 4-anchor.

  • This study investigated and analyzed the symptoms of urinary incontinence and the wearing status, purchase status, and preference for urinary incontinence products in women in their 50s and older. When purchasing urinary incontinence pads and panty, waterproof function and absorption speed were recognized as important. In urinary incontinence products, the most common function was to prevent leakage, and the preferred color was skin. When the number of urinary incontinence was high, the absorption function was considered important. Size or fit was important when the amount of urinary incontinence was small, but waterproof function was found to be important when the amount of urinary incontinence increased. It was hoped that a function to prevent leakage would be added when the incidence of urinary incontinence and the amount of urinary incontinence were high, and a panty-type pad was preferred. It was analyzed that the higher the number of births, the higher the amount of urinary incontinence, and the more frequent symptoms of urinary incontinence appeared. t was found that the earlier menopause, the higher the amount of urinary incontinence.

  • Recently, with the 4th industrial revolution, the demand for high-density semiconductors for large-capacity data processing is increasing. Researchers are interested in researching the reliability of surface mount technology (SMT). In this study, the effect of PCB pad design on assembly and adhesion reliability of passive component was analyzed using design of experiment (DOE). The DOE method was established using the pad length, width, and distance between pads of the PCB as variables. The assembly defect rate of the passive element after the reflow process was derived according to the misplacement direction of the chip resistor. The shear force between the passive element and the PCB was measured using shear tests. In addition, the shape of the solder according to the pad design was analyzed through cross-sectional analysis.

Brown preadipocyte transplantation locally ameliorates obesity

  • Background Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a potential target for anti-obesity treatments. Previous studies have shown that BAT activation causes an acute metabolic boost and reduces adiposity. Furthermore, BAT and BAT-derived cell transplantation reportedly help treat obesity by regulating glucose and fatty acid metabolism. However, since BAT transplantation leads to whole-body weight loss, we speculated that earlier approaches cause a generalized and unnecessary fat tissue loss, including in breast and hip tissues. Methods We transplanted white adipose tissue-derived or BAT-derived preadipocytes prepared from C57BL/6 mice into one side of the inguinal fat pads of an obese mouse model (db/db mice) to examine whether it would cause fat loss at the peri-transplant site (n=5 each). The same volume of phosphate-buffered saline was injected as a control on the other side. Six weeks after transplantation, the inguinal fat pad was excised and weighed. We also measured the concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, fatty acids, and total cholesterol in the peripheral blood. Results BAT-derived preadipocytes showed abundant mitochondria and high levels of mitochondrial membrane uncoupling protein 1 expression, both in vivo and in vitro, with a remarkable reduction in weight of the inguinal fat pad after transplantation (0.17±0.12 g, P=0.043). Only free fatty acid levels tended to decrease in the BAT-transplanted group, but the difference was not significant (P=0.11). Conclusions Our results suggest that brown adipocytes drive fat degradation around the transplantation site. Thus, local transplantation of BAT-derived preadipocytes may be useful for treating obesity, as well as in cosmetic treatments.

The beneficial effect of glycerophosphocholine to local fat accumulation: a comparative study with phosphatidylcholine and aminophylline

  • Injection lipolysis or mesotherapy gained popularity for local fat dissolve as an alternative to surgical liposuction. Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) and aminophyl-line (AMPL) are commonly used compounds for mesotherapy, but their efficacy and safety as lipolytic agents have been controversial. Glycerophosphocholine (GPC) is a choline precursor structurally similar to PPC, and thus introduced in aesthetics as an alternative for PPC. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of GPC on adipocytes differentiation and lipolysis and compared those effects with PPC and AMPL using in vitro and in vivo models. Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 was measured by Oil Red O staining. Lipolysis was assessed by measuring the amount of glycerol released in the culture media. To evaluate the lipolytic activity of GPC on a physiological condition, GPC was subcutaneously injected to one side of inguinal fat pads for 3 days. Lipolytic activity of GPC was assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining in adipose tissue. GPC significantly suppressed adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 in a concentration-dependent manner (22.3% inhibition at 4 mM of GPC compared to control). Moreover, when lipolysis was assessed by glycerol release in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, 6 mM of GPC stimulated glycerol release by two-fold over control. Subcutaneous injection of GPC into the inguinal fat pad of mice significantly reduced the mass of fat pad and the size of adipocytes of injected site, and these effects of GPC were more prominent over PPC and AMPL. Taken together, these results suggest that GPC is the potential therapeutic agent as a local fat reducer.

The protective effects of steamed ginger on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells and adiposity in diet-induced obese mice

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The steamed ginger has been shown to have antioxidative effects and a protective effect against obesity. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ethanolic extract of steamed ginger (SGE) on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model. MATERIALS/METHODS: The protective effects of SGE on adipogenesis were examined in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by measuring lipid accumulations and genes involved in adipogenesis. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a normal diet (ND, 10% fat w/w), a high-fat diet (HFD, 60% fat w/w), and HFD supplemented with either 40 mg/kg or 80 mg/kg of SGE for 12 weeks. Serum chemistry was measured, and the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism was determined in the adipose tissue. Histological analysis and micro-computed tomography were performed to identify lipid accumulations in epididymal fat pads. RESULTS: In 3T3-L1 cells, SGE significantly decreased lipid accumulation, with concomitant decreases in the expression of adipogenesis-related genes. SGE significantly attenuated the increase in body, liver, and epididymal adipose tissue weights by HFD. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly lower in SGE fed groups compared to HFD. In adipose tissue, SGE significantly decreased adipocyte size than that of HFD and altered adipogenesis-related genes. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, steamed ginger exerted anti-obesity effects by regulating genes involved in adipogenesis and lipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cell and epididymal adipose tissue of DIO mice.

Conceptual Design of Bevel Gear-based Leveling Station for Take-off and Landing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (무인 항공기 이착륙을 위한 베벨 기어 기반 수평 유지 스테이션의 개념 설계)

  • Recently, with the increase in the use of UAV(unmanned aerial vehicles), research on horizontal maintenance stations that can take off and land in various environments has been actively conducted. These stations can safely land UAV through multiple DOF(degrees of freedom) or at least 2-DOF-based actuator actuation. Among them, many researchers are dealing with the multi-DOF stewart platform due to its high safety. However, the stewart platform requires high-precision control technology because it requires a lot of torque to actuate according to the load action. Therefore, in this paper, to solve the mentioned problem, a bevel gear-based 2-DOF horizontal maintenance station system is proposed. The proposed system is configured to prevent damage due to air resistance when maintaining ships and to install it in a small space. Also, in terms of system configuration, the bevel gear-based horizontal maintenance system has the main advantage of being able to take off and land UAVs of various sizes through the replacement of station pads. The driving of the system consists of a simple form that can control the motor by adjusting the rotation speed of the motor according to the sea waveform.

Status and Prospect of the Korean Space Industrial Structure (국내 우주산업구조의 현황과 전망)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the supply and demand structure of the domestic space industry through analysis of industrial concentration index, by sector and dependence on revenue by customer type. As a result of industrial concentration analysis, in the case of space application, a supply monopoly or oligopoly structure was revealed in fields such as satellite broadcasting, space insurance, and satellite navigation. In the field of space equipment manufacturing, referred to as the traditional space industry, a supply monopoly structure appeared only in the field of launch pads and test facilities. As a result of analyzing the dependence on revenue by customer type, the dependence on the demand in the space application field is diversified among foreign countries, private institutions, and others. However, in the case of space equipment manufacturing, it is highly dependent on the demand of public institutions, and it seems that there is a monopsony structure.
