Comparison of Pollutant Removal Efficiency in Road Sediment with Media Using Filter Separator (필터 분리기를 이용한 여재별 도로퇴적물의 오염물질 제거효율 비교)

  • Storm runoff from road contains significant loads of particulate and dissolved solids, organic constituents and metal elements. Micro particle is important when considering pollution mitigation because pollutant metal and organics have similar behavior with particles. The objective of this research is to evaluate the hydrodynamic filter separator performance for road storm runoff treatment. A various types of media such as perlite, granular activated carbon, zeolite were used for column test packing media and filter separator, and to determine the removal efficiency with various surface loading rate. As the results of column test, the highest SS removal efficiency was using mixed media(granular activated carbon, zeolite and perlite), and granular activated carbon mixed with zeolite has higher heavy metal removal efficiency than perlite. In laboratory scale hydrodynamic filter separator study, the operation ranges of surface loading rates were from 192 to 1,469 $m^3/m^2/day$. The estimated overall removal efficiencies of hydrodynamic filter separator for typical storm runoff were SS 48.1%, BOD 31.9%, COD 32.6%, TN 15.5%, and TP 17.3%, respectively. For the case of heavy metals, overall removal efficiencies were Fe 26.0%, Cu 19.4%, Cr 25.7, Zn 16.6%, and Pb 15.0%, respectively. The most appropriate medium for hydrodynamic filter separator was perlite mixed with granular activated carbon to treatment of road storm runoff.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the quality of confectioneries among processed foods. Total samples were 3,716, and violative samples among them were 36. The snacks in confectioneries showed violative rate of $1.0\%$, and the traditional snack in snacks showed $8.4\%$. Violative items were acid value and peroxide value for the most part, so the fried snacks need to control the management hygienically. The nutrition ingredients were measured far carbohydrates, protein, fats, sodium and calories in bread. Indication values at packing were not suited to 18 of 20 breads on the indication criterion of ingredient. And nutrition ingredients were not indicated to breads of some company nevertheless be sure to indicated. The processed food should be managed thorough with regard indicated nutrition ingredient.

Modified Atmosphere Storage for Extending Shelf Life of Oyster Mushroom and Shiitake (환경가스조절 저장방법을 이용한 느타리버섯과 표고버섯의 유통기간 연장)

  • In order to study the effect of modified atmosphere storage on extending shelf life of mushrooms, oyster mushroom and Shiitake were wrapped with polyethylene film (PE, $50\;{\mu}m$), and stored at $0.5^{\circ}C$. Mushrooms packed with conventional hardboard box (4kg) lost marketability within $5{\sim}6$ days due to weight loss, shrinkage, browning, spore formation and/or mycellium growth. PE-packing could prevent or retard the deterioration of the mushrooms in the aspects of appearance, texture, discoloration, and microbial contamination. This situation can be best characterized by the reduced respiration rate resulted from the elevated level of carbon dioxide and the reduced level of oxygen in the bag. Although the appearance of the oyster mushroom was maintained for one month, its shelf life was limited to 15 days because of tissue softening. Discoloration of the pileus of shiitake mushroom appears to be the most important factor to determine its marketability. For example, extension of shelf life of Dongo was limited to 15 days, principally due to the browning of the pileus. Shelf life of Hawgo whose color of the pileus changed little over the experimental period, however, could be extened to more than one month.

Lysine Fortification of Milssal and Some Observation on the Fortified Product (밀쌀의 라이신 강화(强化) 및 강화(强化)밀쌀의 식품영양학적(食品營養學的) 고찰(考察))

  • Milssal is a polished, partially gelatinized pressed wheat grain and it is being consumed in Korea. This study was conducted to establish 2 practical means of providing needed lysine to the Korean population through fortification of Milssal. The results are summarized as follow: Lysine infusion of Milssal was significantly higher than polished wheat grain and affected by such factors as time and concentration of infusion solution. Cooking characteristics including water-uptake ratio and expanded volume were apparently better than polished wheat. After conducting the series of fortification experiments under actual manufacturing conditions. a reasonable process was chosen. In the developed process. lysine HCl solution was sprayed instead of water to the cleaned and debranned wheat grains during the regular wetting process. There was no differences in appearance and taste of Milssal before and after fortification. Fortification of the protein of Milssal with lysine has been found to bring a significant improvement in the growth rate of rats and the protein efficiency ratio. Stability remained relatively high throughout the storage period(90 days at $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ or 30 days at $37^{\circ}C$).

  • The handling and processing of agricultural products in Korea is done manually. Small plastic boxes, nets, and corrugated cardboard boxes are used as containers during harvesting, sorting and other product handling operations. However, these practices are labor-intensive, time-consuming, require various kinds of packing materials, and are expensive because of high operating costs. To overcome these problems, the use of pallet bins with pre-cooling and storage features for handling and processing bulk farm products was investigated. The airflow resistances through bulk potato, onion and mandarin stocks were measured, and the pallet bins and a pressure pre-cooling device were manufactured. The opening ratio, bed depth and airflow rate through bulk potato, onion and mandarin in the pallet bin were defined with regression equations. The cooling rates of bulk potato, onion and mandarin were 0.8C/h ($21.7{\rightarrow}0C$, 14.5 h), 0.4C/h ($15.4{\rightarrow}.0C$, 32.2 h) and 0.7C/h ($13.7{\rightarrow}C$, 18.8 h), respectively, with the pressure pre-cooling system. Temperature deviances for storage of bulk potato, onion and mandarin were 0.12C, 0.12C and 0.17C, respectively.

The effects of CO2 treatment for freshness extension of Pleurotus eryngii (큰느타리버섯의 신선도 유지기간 연장을 위한 CO2 처리 효과)

  • King oyster mushrooms(Pleurotus eryngii) are the second biggest mushroom for exporting in Korea but their browning and soft rot is the main factors of claim during long distance transportation. Fresh king oyster mushrooms were treated with $CO_2$ at 30, 50% for 3 hours at $5^{\circ}C$ prior to storage at $20^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$. There was no difference on respiration rate after $CO_2$ treatment. However exposure to $CO_2$ for 3h prior to MA packing maintained the firmness and delayed color(hunter L and b value) change of mushrooms during storage. Especially an incubation in high $CO_2$ at 30% significantly reduced soft rot and browning symptoms resulting in one week extension of shelf-life during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ compared to control and 50% $CO_2$ treatment.

Effect of On-site Postharvest Hot Water Treatment on Storage Quality of Commercial Greenhouse Satsuma Mandarin (현장 열수처리에 따른 온실재배 온주감귤 상품의 저장 중 품질특성 변화)

  • Greenhouse satsuma mandarins (Citrus unshiu Marc., cv. Gungchun) of an early harvesting cultivar were treated by hot water showering at 65$^{\circ}C$ for 10 s at a commercial scale in a packing house and then stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 3 weeks and subsequently at 18$^{\circ}C$ for 1 week (simulated shelf-life) to examine the potential use of hot water treatment (HWT) as an environmentally benign method to maintain mandarin quality characteristics during postharvest storage and sale. The respiration rate just after heat treatment or during storage was at a similar level in both the treated and untreated fruit. HWT also had no detrimental effects on quality attributes including pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids content, weight loss, firmness, and peel color. The development of stem-end rot, mold decay, and black rot was lower in the heat-treated fruit compared to those in the untreated control. A sensory evaluation showed that HWT markedly improved fruit appearance, making the fruit cleaner and glossier. The results suggested that HWT can be applied to satsuma mandarin as an effective pretreatment to maintain postharvest quality during storage and marketing.

Development of a Bioscrubber for Treatment of VOC Emissions from Contaminated Soil with Hydrocarbons (유류오염토양으로부터 발생하는 VOC가스처리를 위한 바이오스크러버 개발)

  • Aiming at the treatment of large volumes of gas with a low concentration of poorly water soluble VOC(Volatile Organic Compound), a new system is proposed: the combination absorption tower/bioreactor. In the scrubber part of the bioscrubbing system, the contaminating compounds are absorbed in a aqueous phase. The contaminated scrubbing liquid is transported to the bioreactor, where the compounds are biodegraded by aerobic microorganisms (mainly to carbon dioxide, water, and biomass). In this study, separation of a volatile organic compound(VOC) out of a waste gas stream has been carried out using a re-cyclable high boiling point extrant(HBE). The liquid stream containing a high boiling point entrant(HBE) scrubs the gas stream in a direct gas-liquid countercurrent contacting operation in a packed tower for the removal of said component from the gaseous stream. A packed-bed column using Pall Ring was set up in order to simulate practical conditions for the scrubbing tower. The liquid stream transported to the bioreactor is recovered and recycled to the scrubber. The model gas, which contained 400 mg/$\textrm{m}^3$ of toluene, at a rate of 100 L/min, flowed into the packed column where the scrubbing liquid trickled over the packing in countercurrent to the rising gas at 10~15L/min. The bioscrubber designed for large volume air streams containing VOCs showed removal efficiency up to 80% in an optimum operating conditions during the tests fer removing toluene from an air stream by scrubbing the air stream with HBE.

Enhancement of PLED lifetime using thin film passivation with amorphous Mg-Zn-F

  • In this study, a new thin films passivation technique using Zn with high electronegativity and $MgF_2$, a fluorine material with better optical transmittance than the sealing film materials that have thus far been reported was proposed. Targets with various ratios of $MgF_2$ to Zn (5:5, 4:6 and 3:7) were fabricated to control the amount of Zn in the passivation films. The Mg-Zn-F films were deposited onto the substrates and Zn was located in the gap between the lattices of $MgF_2$ without chemical metathesis in the Mg-Zn-F films. The thickness and optical transmittance of the deposited passivation films were approximately 200 nm and 80%, respectively. It was confirmed via electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis that the Zn content of the film that was sputtered using a 4:6 ratio target was 9.84 wt%. The Zn contents of the films made from the 5:5 and 3:7 ratio targets were 2.07 and 5.01 wt%, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was determined to be $38^{\circ}C$, RH 90-100%. The WVTR of the Mg-Zn-F film that was deposited with a 4:6 ratio target nearly reached the limit of the equipment, $1\times10^{-3}\;gm^2{\cdot}day$. As the Zn portion increased, the packing density also increased, and it was found that the passivation films effectively prevented the permeation by either oxygen or water vapor. To measure the characteristics of gas barrier, the film was applied to the emitting device to evaluate their lifetime. The lifetime of the applied device with passivation was increased to 25 times that of the PLED device, which was non-passivated.

Glass-alumina Composites Prepared by Melt-infiltration: II. Kinetic Studies (용융침투법으로 제조한 유리-알루미나 복합체: II. Kinetic 연구)

  • Four commercial alumina powders having different particle size of $0.5{\mu}m,\;2.8{\mu}m,\;12{\mu}m,\;and\;45{\mu}m$ were presintered at 1120$^{\circ}C$ for 2h and then lanthanum aluminosilicate glass was infiltrated at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 2h in the interval of 0.1h to investigate the penetration kinetic of the glass into the alumina preforms. The infiltration distance is parabolic with respect to time as described by the Washburn equation and the penetration rate constant, K, increases with raising the alumina particle size. The strength of glass-alumina composites increases as the alumina particle size reaches to 2.8${\mu}m$ due to the increase in packing, however, decreases with further increasing the alumina particle size. The fracture toughness of the composites rises with increasing the alumina particle size due to the crack bowing and the interaction between crack and alumina particles.
