  • The Photocatalytic activity was investigated with the increase of flow rate in a $UV/TiO_2$ packed-bed system. The rate of phenol degradation over $UV/TiO_2$ (dia. = 5 mm) was increased up to 300 mL/min and reached a plateau beyond 400 mL/min. The bead photocatalysts did not exhibit a distinct difference of the phenol degradation rate irrespective of corrosion rates of glass beads and $TiO_2$ coating amounts. Degussa P25 exhibited a higher photocatalytic activity in comparison to other $TiO_2$ sols(Ishihara & N). The performance(activity and durability) of $UV/TiO_2$ packed-bed system can be enhanced by the use of $TiO_2$-coated glass beads instead of granular types that is easily attrited by the shearing force of flowing fluids.

  • The purpose of this research was to study the kinetics of a packed bed aerobic biofilm process. Experiments were carried out by feeding an aerated packed bed reactor with a synthetic wastewater. The reactor packed with glass beads as media had a nominal hydraulic detention time of 5 hours. The flow pattern in the reactor was determined by a tracer test using a NaCl solution to be a completely-mixed type. The results of the research showed that the F/M ratio in the reactor was almost constant since the the biomass increased due to the growth of biofilm as the volumetric organic loading increased. It was also proved theoretically and experimentally that packed bed aerobic biofilm process could be analyzed by the kinetics of completely-mixed activated sludge process with sludge recycle.

  • The catalytic effect of waterworks sludge on NOx removal in $BaTiO_3$pellets and sludge pellets combined packed-bed plasma reactor with plate-plate electrode geometry is measured for the various conditions. NOx removal rate is about 90[%] at $BaTiO_3$-sludge combined reactor used fresh sludge. $NO_2$ and $O_3$ as byproducts are significantly generated in only $BaTiO_3$ packed-bed plasma reactor, however, in $BaTiO_3$-sludge combined packed-bed reactor, $NO_2$ and $O_3$ are completely removed while $CO_2$ as by-products are observed from FTIR spectra. $NO_2$ and $O_3$ seem to react with metallic molecules, metal oxide, and organic compounds that are generally chlorophyll included in sludge. NOx removal rate increases with $O_2$ concentration increasing. Removal rates $NO_2$ and $O_3$ are independent of operating time and repetition measurement times.

  • To develope chemical heat pump, which is operated by heat of high temperature using available energy sources such as solar heat and many kinds of waste thermal energy we have studied theoretically the enhancement effects of inserted fins on the rate of heat transfer and reaction in cylinderical $Ca(OH)_2$ packed bed reactor. The results obtained by numerical analysis about profiles of temperature, completion time of reaction and exothermic heat amount released from the reactor read as the inserted copper fins in reator reduce the completion time of dehydration reaction in packed bed by half, and the rate of thermochemical reaction depends on the temperature and concentration, and it is also governed by the boundary conditions and the rate of heat transfer in the particle packed bed.

  • Alkaline protease for the hydrolysis of egg yolk protein was immobilized on five carriers - Duolite A568, Celite R640, Dowex-1, Dowex 50W and Silica gel R60. Duolite A568 showed a maximum immobilization yield of 24.7%. Optimum pH for the free and immobilized enzyme was pH 8 and 9, respectively. However, no change was observed in optimum temperature ($50^{\circ}C$). Thermal stability was observed in immobilized enzymes compared to free enzymes. The immobilized enzyme retained 86% activity after 10 cycle operations in a repeated batch process. The effect of flow rate on the stability of enzyme activity in continuous packed-bed reactor was investigated. Lowering flow rate increased the stability of the immobilized enzyme. After 96 hr of continuous operation in a packed-bed reactor, the immobilized enzyme retained 83 and 61% activity when casein and egg yolk were used as a raw materials, respectively.

  • We deal with a problem to determine experimentally as well as theoretically permeability of incompressible viscous flow through packed bed of bidisperse hard spheres in size. For the size ratios of large to small spheres ${\lambda}$=1.25 and 2, we set up bidisperse packing and measured porosity and permeability at various volumetric ratios of small to large spheres ${\gamma}$. Bidisperse packing shows lower porosity and permeability than monodisperse packing does. Variation of porosity as a function of ${\gamma}$ does not match with that of permeability. A theoretical expression for predicting permeability of a viscous flow for packed bed of bidisperse packing is derived based on calculation of drag force acting on each sphere and its predictions are compared with the experimental data and those from some relations previously suggested. It is found that our theory shows better agreement with experimental results than the previous studies and is proved to be quite simple and accurate in estimating the permeability.

  • Immobilized cellulase on weak ion exchange resin showed a typical Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Immobilized cellulase had better stability with respect to pH and temperature than free cellulase. Kinetics of thermal inactivation on free and immobilized cellulase followed first order rate, and immobilized cellulase had a longer half-life than free cellulase. The initial rate method was used to characterize the kinetic parameters of free and immobilized enzyme. The Michaelis-Menten constant $K_m$ was higher for the immobilized enzyme than it was for the free enzyme. The effect of the recirculation rate on cellulose degradation was studied in a recycling packed-bed reactor. In a continuous packed-bed reactor, the increasing flow rate of cellulose decreased the conversion efficiency of cellulose at different input lactose concentrations. Continuous operation for five days was conducted to investigate the stability of long term operation. The retained activity of the immobilized enzymes was 48% after seven days of operation.

  • Pressure drop, as a function of air flow, was measured for tomatoes and mandarins in bulk with different sizes, stacking arrangements and bed porosities. Pressure drop was also measured on carton vent holes and on a carton of packed fruits . and the cumulative effects of air flow resistance of vent holes and packed fruits in bulk on the air flow resistance of a carton of fruits were evaluated . Equation were presented to describe pressure drop bulk fruits, of an empty carton and of a carton of packed fruits as related to the air velocity , the bed porosity, the fruit diameter and the opening ratio of the vent hole.

  • Packed-bed reactor for removing ammonia was tested at different loading rates. Nitrifiers for ammonia removing was encapsulated in gel media which consisted of polyethlene glycol, alginate and activated carbon. The removal efficiency was nearly 100% when ammonia loading was $12g/m^3/hr$, and the maximum elimination capacity (EC) achieved on this study was $18g/m^3/hr$. The initial microbial portion of nitrifiers in the media was about 82% and it was increased to more than 90% at the end of the operation. Short-term shock loading test was carried out to survey the stability of the media. The inlet loading rates were varied from 2 to $20g/m^3/hr$. The packed-bed reactor overcame the shock loading i.e. removal efficiency recovered rapidly from about 80% to almost 100% within 6 hrs. The results of Live/Dead cell test showed that nitrifiers maintained there activity in the encapsulated media during the test and also against ammonia shock load.
