  • This work presents a study on development of a practical and quantitative technique for assessment of the structural health condition by piezoelectric impedance-based technique associated with longitudinal wave propagation method. The bolt fastening condition is adjusted by torque wrench. In order to estimate the damage condition numerically, three damage indices, impedance peak frequency shift ${\Delta}F$ is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, an assessment method is described for estimation of the damage by using these three damage indices.

The bolt fastening condition is adjusted by torque wrench. In order to estimate the damage condition numerically, three damage indices, impedance peak frequency shift ${\Delta}F$, peak amplitude ratio $\delta$ and quality factor ratio $\gamma$, are proposed in this paper. Furthermore, an assessment method is described for estimation of the damage by using these three damage indices.

  • In this paper, a hybrid vibration-impedance-based damage monitoring approach is experimentally evaluated for prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with local strand breakage. Firstly, the hybrid monitoring scheme is designed to alert damage occurrence from changes in vibration characteristics and to localize strand breakage from changes in impedance signatures. Secondly, a full-scale PSC anchorage is experimented to measure global vibration responses and local impedance responses under a sequence of simulated strand-breakage events. Finally, the measured data are analyzed using the hybrid monitoring framework. The change of structural condition (i.e., damage extent) induced by the local strand breakage is estimated by changes in a few natural frequencies obtained from a few accelerometers in the structure. The damaged strand is locally identified by tomography analysis of impedance features measured via an array of PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) sensors mounted on the anchorage. Experimental results demonstrate that the strand breakage in the PSC structure can be accurately assessed by using the combined vibration and impedance features.

  • PZT(30/70) thick film was fabricated by using 1,3 propanediol-based sol-gel method. Prepared film of pyroelectric property was investigated by Dynamic method of modulation frequency dependence. Pyroelectric coefficient was obtained about $5.0{\times}10^{-8}\;C/cm^2{\cdot}K$. The figure of merits for voltage responsively and specific detectivity were $3.4{\times}10^{-11}\;C{\cdot}cm/J$ and $5.9{\times}10^{-9}\;C{\cdot}cm/J$, respectively, because of relative high-dielectric constant and high-pyroelectric coefficient. Voltage responsively was increased at low modulation frequency and it was decreased at high modulation frequency. Voltage responsively was maximum 1.84 V/W at 10Hz. As Johnson noise is dominant, Noise voltage was increased nearly proportional to $f^{-1/2}$. Noise equivalent power and specific detectivity were $2.83{\times}10^{-7}\;W/Hz^{1/2}$ and 3.13{\times}10^5\;cm{\cdot}Hz^{1/2}/W$ the same frequency at 80Hz, respectively.

  • Thickness dependence of orientation on piezoelectric and electrical properties was investigated by PZT (52/48) films by diol based sol-gel method. The thickness of each layer by spinning at one time was $0.2{\mu}m$ and crack-free films could be successfully deposited on 4 inches Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrates by 0.5 mol solutions in the range from $0.2{\mu}m$ to $3.8{\mu}m$. Excellent P-E hysteresis curves were achieved, which were attributed to the well-densified PZT films and columnar grain without pores or any defects between interlayers. The (111) preferred orientation of films were shown in the range of thickness below $1{\mu}m$. As the thickness increased, the (111) preferred orientation disappeared from $1{\mu}m$ to $3{\mu}m$ region, and the orientation of films became random above $3{\mu}m$. Dielectric constants and longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient, $d_{33}$, measured by pneumatic method were saturated around the value of about 1400 and 300 pC/N respectively above the thickness of $1{\mu}m$.

  • Non-destructive test on the size and depth of cracks has been required for the safety evaluation of structures. Ultrasonic method based on laser techniques is one of the most popular non-destructive methods which overwhelm PZT based tests. In the present paper, ultrasonic was generated by high powered Q switching Nd:YAG pulse laser. Experiments were carried out using Fabry-Perot interferometer which was intensively discussed in the present study.

  • The common practice for the identification of piezoelectric properties is based on the use of immittance of a resonator with a certain geometry and poling direction. In this paper, a new method is suggested to identify the complex-valued piezoelectric material constants. This method Is based on the minimization of differences between the analytical immittance and the experimental measurement of resonator. Non-linear minimization problems are formulated to find out the unknown properties relevant to the resonators. The immittance data used for identification are measured at a number of frequencies which cover the vicinity of resonance frequency and the low frequency region. To illustrate the proposed technique, the complex-valued coefficients are identified for a typical PZT4 ceramic composition.
