Compensation of temperature effect on impedance responses of PZT interface for prestress-loss monitoring in PSC girders

  • In this study, a method to compensate the effect of temperature variation on impedance responses which are used for prestress-loss monitoring in prestressed concrete (PSC) girders is presented. Firstly, an impedance-based technique using a mountable lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) interface is presented for prestress-loss monitoring in the local tendon-anchorage member. Secondly, a cross-correlation-based algorithm to compensate the effect of temperature variation in the impedance signatures is outlined. Thirdly, lab-scale experiments are performed on a PSC girder instrumented with a mountable PZT interface at the tendon-anchorage. A series of temperature variation and prestress-loss events are simulated for the lab-scale PSC girder. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is experimentally verified for prestress-loss monitoring in the PSC girder under temperature-varying conditions and prestress-loss events.

PZT 박막 캐퍼시터의 특성에 기여하는 PZT-전극계면층의 영향 (Effects of PZT-Electrode Interface Layers on Capacitor Properties)

  • Metal-Ferroelectric-Metal(MFM) 구조의 개퍼시터에서 $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3(PZT)$-전극 계면층이 PZT 박막 특성에 기여하는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 Pt/PZT/계면층/Pt/$TiO_2/SiO_2$/Si 구조의 캐퍼시터를 제작하였다. 계면층으로 사용될 물질들 중에서 $PbTiO_3(PT)$ 층을 sol-gel 방법으로 형성하였으며, PbO, $ZrO_2,\;TiO_2$ 층들을 reactive sputtering 방법으로 형성하였다. PZT박막을 구성하는 원소들로 이루어진 단순 산화물들의 특성을 평가하기 위하여 PbO, $ZrO_2,\;TiO_2$를 계면층으로 사용하여 $600^{\circ}C$에서 열처리를 실시하였고, 이 경우에는 $TiO_2$가 가장 우수하게 PZT의 결정립 크기를 미세하게 하는 효과를 보였으나, 두께가 증가함에 따라 표면 거칠기가 증가하고 anatase 상으로 남기 때문에 강유전특성이 열화되었다. 반면에 PT 박막을 계면층으로 사용한 경우에는 결정립 크기의 감소와 더불어 전기적인 특성도 향상되었다. 또한 PZT의 핵생성 위치를 판단하기 위하여 PT 삽입층의 위치를 변화하며, 실험한 결과, 하부전극과 PZT 박막의 계면에 PT 삽입층을 형성하였을 경우에 가장 효과적인 seed로서의 역할을 하였다.

Ferroelectric Properties and Comparison between $PZT/IrO_2$ and PZT/Ir

  • Reactively sputtered $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$(PZT) films on $IrO_2$and Ir were evaluated with particular consideration on interface properties. The $IrO_2$and Ir were previously annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ in $O_2$or $N_2$atmosphere, respectively. There was no appreciable roughening in the interface of the $PZT/IrO_2$respective to that of the PZT/Ir; the rms roughness of $IrO_2$and Ir was about 3nm and 10nm, respectively. The ferroelectric properties of the $PZT/IrO_2$were found to be better than that of the PZT/Ir; however, the leakage current of the $PZT/IrO_2$was slightly larger than that of the PZT/Ir. The $PZT/IrO_2$thin films did not exhibit any fatigue up to $10^{11}$ cycles; the $P^*\;_r-P^r$ value decreased only from 16.6 to 14$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ until $10^{12}$ polarization reversals. On the other hand, although thin $IrO_2$layer was formed between PZT and Ir, the PZT/Ir thin films began to undergo fatigue after $10^9$ polarization reversals.

Fatigue Characteristics of PZT Thin Films Deposited by ECR-PECVD

  • Fatigue characteristics of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films deposited by electron cyclotron resonance plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (ECR-PECVD) were investigated. The fatigue characteristics were investigated with respect to PZT film thickness, domain structure, fatigue pulse height, temperature, electrode materials and electrode configurations. The used top and bottom electrode materials were Pt and $RuO_2$. In the fatigue characteristics with fatigue pulse height and PZT film thickness, the fatigue rates are independent of the applied fatigue pulse height at the electric field regions to saturate the P-E hysteresis and polarization $(P^*,\;P^A)$ characteristics. The unipolar and bipolar fatigue characteristics of PZT capacitors with four different electrode configurations $(Pt//Pt,\;Pt//RuO_2,\;RuO_2//Pt,\;and\;RuO_2//RuO_2)$ were also investigated. The polarization-shifts during the unipolar fatigue and the temperature dependence of fatigue rate suggest that the migration of charged defects should not be expected in our CVD-PZT films. It seems that the polarization degradations are attributed to the formation of charged defects only at the Pt/PZT interface during the domain switching. The charged defects pin the domain wall at the vicinity of Pt/PZT interface. When the top and bottom electrode configurations are of asymmetric $(Pt//RuO_2,\;RuO_2//Pt)$, the internal fields can be generated by the difference of charged defect densities between top and bottom interfaces.

Wireless Impedance-Based SUM for Bolted Connections via Multiple PZT-Interfaces

  • This study presents a structural health monitoring (SHM) method for bolted connections by using multi-channel wireless impedance sensor nodes and multiple PZT-interfaces. To achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, a PZT-interface is designed to monitor bolt loosening in bolted connection based on variation of electro-mechanical(EM) impedance signatures. Secondly, a wireless impedance sensor node is designed for autonomous, cost-efficient and multi-channel monitoring. For the sensor platform, Imote2 is selected on the basis of its high operating speed, low power requirement and large storage memory. Finally, the performance of the wireless sensor node and the PZT-interfaces is experimentally evaluated for a bolt-connection model Damage monitoring method using root mean square deviation(RMSD) index of EM impedance signatures is utilized to estimate the strength of the bolted joint.

  • Ferroelectric PZT heterolayered thin films were fabricated by spin coating method on the Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate using PZT(10/90) and PZT(90/10) metal alkoxide solutions. All PZT heterolayered films showed a homogeneous grain structure without presence of the rosette structure. It can be assumed that the lower PZT layers a role of nucleation site or seeding layer for the formation of the upper PZT layer. Zr and Ti diffusion into the Pt electrode were mainly distributed at the surface of Pt electrode beneath the PZT/Pt interface. The PZT/Pt interfacial layer showed a microstructure characterized by a grain phase surrounded by a Pb-deficient pyrochlore matrix phase. The relative dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the PZT-6 film were 567 and 3.6, respectively.

Numerical Simulation of Electro-Mechanical Impedance Response in Cable-Anchor Connection Interlace

  • In this study, a finite element(FE) analysis on electro-mechanical impedance response of cable-anchor connection interface under various anchor force is presented. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, an interface washer coupled with piezoelectric(PZT) material is designed for monitoring cable-force loss. The interface washer is a small aluminum plate on which a PZT patch is surface-bonded. Cable-force loss could be monitored by installing the interface washer between the anchor plate and the anchorage of cable-anchor connection and examining the changes of impedance of the interface washer. Secondly, a FE model for cable-anchor connection is established to examine the effect of cable-force on impedance response of interface washer. Also, the effects of geometrical and material properties of the interface washer on impedance responses under various cable-forces are investigated. Finally, validation of the FE analysis is experimentally evaluated by a lab-scale cable-anchor connection.

Wave propagation simulation and its wavelet package analysis for debonding detection of circular CFST members

  • In order to investigate the interface debonding defects detection mechanism between steel tube and concrete core of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), multi-physical fields coupling finite element models constituted of a surface mounted Piezoceramic Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) actuator, an embedded PZT sensor and a circular cross section of CFST column are established. The stress wave initiation and propagation induced by the PZT actuator under sinusoidal and sweep frequency excitations are simulated with a two dimensional (2D) plain strain analysis and the difference of stress wave fields close to the interface debonding defect and within the cross section of the CFST members without and with debonding defects are compared in time domain. The linearity and stability of the embedded PZT response under sinusoidal signals with different frequencies and amplitudes are validated. The relationship between the amplitudes of stress wave and the measurement distances in a healthy CFST cross section is also studied. Meanwhile, the responses of PZT sensor under both sinusoidal and sweep frequency excitations are compared and the influence of debonding defect depth and length on the output voltage is also illustrated. The results show the output voltage signal amplitude and head wave arriving time are affected significantly by debonding defects. Moreover, the measurement of PZT sensor is sensitive to the initiation of interface debonding defects. Furthermore, wavelet packet analysis on the voltage signal under sweep frequency excitations is carried out and a normalized wavelet packet energy index (NWPEI) is defined to identify the interfacial debonding. The value of NWPEI attenuates with the increase in the dimension of debonding defects. The results help understand the debonding defects detection mechanism for circular CFST members with PZT technique.

  • Micromixer plays an important role in Bio-MEMS or ${\mu}-TAS$. Mixing is generally generated by turbulence and interdiffusion of two fluids. Because of low Reynolds number(Re << 2000) in ${\mu}-channel$, it is difficult to generate turbulence, so mixing mainly depends on interdiffusion. Thus long channel distance is required to mix two different fluids. To reduce the channel length required for mixing, we propose the a new active ${\mu}-mixer$ that two fluids are effectively mixed in ${\mu}-channel$ by the ultrasonic wave which is generated by PZT. The ultrasonic wave is radiated into a chamber in the cross-section directional direction to interface with the two fluids. The two fluids are positioned one on top of the other. Mixing state is measured by the changing of color due to the reaction of NaOH and phenolphtalein.

Pb-deficient PZT phase was formed at PZT/Pt interface due to the diffusion of Pb element into a Pt bottom electrode. The relative dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the PZT-6 film were 567 and 3.6%, respectively. Increasing the number of coatings, remanent polarization and coercive field were decreased and the values of the PZT-6 heterolayered film were $7.18\muC/cm^2$ and 68.5kV/cm, respectively. Leakage current densities were increased with increasing the number of coatings, and the value of the PZT-4 film was about $7\times10-8A/cm^2$ at 0.05MV/cm.
