A failed spent fuel rod with 53,000 MWd/tU from a nuclear power plant was characterized, and the fission products and oxygen layer in the pellet-clad mechanical interaction region were observed using an EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer). A sound fuel rod burned under similar conditions was used to compare and analyze, the results of the failed fuel rod. In the failed fuel rod, the oxide layer represented $10{\mu}m$ of the boundary of the cladding, and $35{\mu}m$ of the region outside the cladding. By comparison, in the sound fuel rod, the oxide layer was $8{\mu}m$, observed in the cladding boundary region. The cladding inner surface corrosion and the resulting fuel-cladding bonding were investigated using an EPMA. Zirconium existed in the bonding layer of the (U, Zr)O compound beyond the pellet cladding interaction gap of $20{\mu}m$, and composition of UZr2O3 was observed in the failed fuel rod. This paper presents the results of the EPMA examination of a spent fuel specimen, and a technique to analyze fission products in the pellet-clad mechanical interaction region.

Measurements of activity concentrations of radionuclides in atmospheric releases were performed in 2017-2018 at vent stacks of seven Russian nuclear power plants. The selected instruments and research methods, with detection limits significantly lower than the existing detection limit of Russian NPPs routine control, allowed to reliably determine up to 26 radionuclides. Analysis of experimental data allows to determine the list of radionuclides for calculation the effective dose rates to public and the permissible annual discharge levels for each Russian NPP. Radiocarbon is determined as major contributor for the dose from the atmospheric releases of LWGR reactors - up to 98% for EGP-6 and RBMK-1000 (Smolensk NPP) reactors. For PWR reactors (VVER) radionuclides contribution to the annual dose from atmospheric releases is more complicated, but, in general, dose is formed by tritium, $^{14}C$ and noble gases. The special monitoring results with ranking of measured radionuclides according to their contribution to the effective dose makes it possible to optimize the list of controlled radionuclides in airborne releases of Russian NPPs from 94 to 8-16 for different NPPs.

Multiple spurious operations (MSOs) mean multiple fire induced circuit faults causing an undesired operation of one or more systems or components. The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) of the United States published NEI 00-01 as guidelines for solving MSOs. And this guideline includes MSO scenarios of pressurized water reactor (PWR) and boiling water reactor (BWR). Nuclear power plant operators in U.S. analyzed MSOs under MSO scenarios included in NEI 00-01 and operators of PWRs in Korea also analyzed MSOs under the scenarios of NEI 00-01. As there are no pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) in the United States, MSO scenarios of PHWRs are not included in the NEI 00-01 and any feasible scenarios have not been developed. This paper developed MSO scenarios which can be applied to PHWRs by reviewing the 63 MSO scenarios included in NEI 00-01. This study found that seven scenarios out of the 63 MSO scenarios can be applied and three more scenarios need to be developed.
The randomness and incipient nature of certain faults in reactor systems warrant a robust and dynamic detection mechanism. Existing models and methods for fault diagnosis using different mathematical/statistical inferences lack incipient and novel faults detection capability. To this end, we propose a fault diagnosis method that utilizes the flexibility of data-driven Support Vector Machine (SVM) for component-level fault diagnosis. The technique integrates separately-built, separately-trained, specialized SVM modules capable of component-level fault diagnosis into a coherent intelligent system, with each SVM module monitoring sub-units of the reactor coolant system. To evaluate the model, marginal faults selected from the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) are simulated in the steam generator and pressure boundary of the Chinese CNP300 PWR (Qinshan I NPP) reactor coolant system, using a best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, RELAP5/SCDAP Mod4.0. Multiclass SVM model is trained with component level parameters that represent the steady state and selected faults in the components. For optimization purposes, we considered and compared the performances of different multiclass models in MATLAB, using different coding matrices, as well as different kernel functions on the representative data derived from the simulation of Qinshan I NPP. An optimum predictive model - the Error Correcting Output Code (ECOC) with TenaryComplete coding matrix - was obtained from experiments, and utilized to diagnose the incipient faults. Some of the important diagnostic results and heuristic model evaluation methods are presented in this paper.
The phenomenon identification and ranking table (PIRT) is an important basis in the nuclear power plant (NPP) thermal-hydraulic analysis. This study focuses on the importance ranking of the input parameters when lacking the PIRT, and the target scenario is the small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) CPR1000. A total of 54 input parameters which might have influence on the figure of merit (FOM) were identified, and the sensitivity measure of each input on the FOM was calculated through an optimized moment-independent global sensitivity analysis method. The importance ranking orders of the parameters were transformed into the Savage scores, and the parameters were categorized based on the Savage scores. A parameter importance ranking table for the SBLOCA scenario of the CPR1000 reactor was obtained, and the influences of some important parameters at different break sizes and different accident stages were analyzed.

A protective oxide layer forms on the material surfaces of a Nuclear Power Plant during operation due to high temperature. These oxides can host radionuclides, the activated corrosion products of fission products, resulting in decommissioning workers' exposure. These deposited oxides are iron oxides such as Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and mixed ferrites such as nickel ferrites, chromium ferrites, and cobalt ferrites. Developing a new chemical decontamination technology for domestic CANDU-type reactors is challenging due to variations in oxide compositions from different structural materials in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) system. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has already developed a chemical decontamination process for PWRs called 'HyBRID' (Hydrazine-Based Reductive metal Ion Decontamination) that does not use organic acids or organic chelating agents at all. As the first step to developing a new chemical decontamination technology for the Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) system, we investigated magnetite dissolution behaviors in various HyBRID inorganic acidic solutions to assess their applicability to the PHWR reactor system, which forms a thicker oxide film.

Simulating the Corrosion-Related Unidentified Deposit (CRUD) on the surface of fuel assemblies is necessary to predict the axial offset anomaly and the localized corrosion induced by the CRUD during the operation of nuclear power plants. A new CRUD model was developed to predict the formation of the CRUD deposits, considering the deposition and erosion mechanisms. The heat transfer and capillary flow within the CRUD were also considered to evaluate the boiling amount within the CRUD layer. This model predicted a CRUD deposit thickness of 44 ㎛ during a one-cycle operation of the Seabrook nuclear power plant. The CRUD deposition tended to accelerate and decelerate during the simulation, by being related to boiling mechanism on the deposits surface. Additionally, during a three-cycle operation corresponding to the refueling period, the CRUD deposition was saturated at a thickness of 80 ㎛, which was in good agreement with the suggested thickness for CRUD buildupin pressurized water reactors. Surface boiling on the thin CRUD deposits enhanced the acceleration of the deposition, even when the wick boiling properties were not favorable for CRUD deposition. To ensure the certainty of the simulation results, sensitivity analyses were conducted for the porosity, chimney density, and the constants employed in the proposed model of the CRUD.

The inlet coolant temperature reduction technique has been used to extend the load follow operation further in the end-of-cycle-life(EOL). In order to simulate the technique and calculate the nuclear characteristics of a PWR core according to the load follow operation, the three dimensional computing system has been established. The analysis was performed in both MINB and SPINR modes of typical 12-3-6-3 locad follow operation for the EOL of KNU-1 plant. Moreover, the capability of return-to-power has been also tested for those two modes with the system analysis by the RETRAN-02 code. The results show that it has no difficulty to extend the load follow operation further in the EOL by applying the inlet coolant temprature reduction, and also the spinning reserve capacity(SRC) increases by 13% in MINB mode and 14% in SPINR mode Bore that used by control rods only, for 14$^{\circ}$ F drop in the inlet temperature.

A multi-regression model was developed to estimate the decommissioning cost for Kori unit 1 using foreign nuclear power plant (NPP) decommissioning cost data. First, the decommissioning cost data were collected for 13 boiling water reactors and 16 pressurized water reactors and converted into the values as of November 2019. Then, for the regression model, the decommissioning cost was chosen as the dependent variable, and two variables were selected as independent variables: a contamination factor that was designed to reflect the operational characteristics of the decommissioned NPP and the decommissioning period. A statistical package in the R language was used to derive the regression model. Finally, the regression model was applied to estimate the decommissioning cost for Kori unit 1. The estimated decommissioning cost for Kori unit 1 was 663.40~928.32 million US dollars (782,812~1,095,418 million Korean won).

KAERI has developed DUPIC nuclear fuel with the refabrication of spent PWR fuel discharged from domestic nuclear power plant by a dry process at M6 hot-cell in IMEF To verify the performance of DUPIC nuclear fuel, irradiation test at the operating conditions of commercial power plant is essential. Since the HANARO research reactor of KAERI does not have fuel test loop(FTL) for irradiating nuclear fuel under high temperature and high pressure conditions, DUPIC fuel cannot be irradiated in the FTL of HANARO. In the 13-th PRM among Korea, Canada, USA and IAEA, AECL proposed that KAERI fabricated DUPIC fuel can be irradiated in the FTL of the NRU research reactor without charge of neutrons. The transportation quantity of DUPIC fuel to Canada is 10 elements(about 6kg). This transportation package is classified as the 7-th class according to "recommendation on the transport of dangerous goods" made by the United Nations. In case of air shipment, until now, there is no proper air transportation cask for DUPIC fuel. In case of sea transportation is possible but requires very high cost.high cost.
