  • The purpose of this paper is to discuss the fabrication of $\beta$-PVDF($\beta$-Polyvinylidene fluoride, ${\beta}-PVF_2$) organic thin films through the vapor deposition method and to investigate the piezoelectric properties of the organic thin films produced. Vapor deposition was performed under the following conditions : the temperature of evaporator, the applied electric field and the pressure of reaction chamber were $270^{\circ}C$, 142.4 kV/cm and $2.0{\times}10^{-5}Torr$, respectively. The results showed that the amount of $\beta$-form PVDF increased from 72 % to 95.5 % with an increase in the substrate temperature. In the case of a sensor response characteristic by varying the force moment from $1.372{\times}10^{-5}N{\cdot}m$ to $39.2{\times}10^{-5}N{\cdot}m$, the output voltage increased from 1.39V to 7.04V.

  • The purpose of this paper is improvement the piezoelectric of Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) organic thin films is fabricated by vapor deposition method. The piezoelectric of PVDF organic thin films attributed to dipole orientation in crystalline region. Also, the piezoelectric characteristic reduced that dipole moments orientation in crystalline region interfered with impurity carriers. Therefore, PVDF organic thin films fabricated with high substrate temperature condition for crystallinity improvement. The crystallinity of PVDF organic thin films fabricated by this condition increase from 47 to 67.8%. The ion density of PVDF organic thin films fabricated by substrate temperature variation from $30^{\circ}C$ to $105^{\circ}C$ decreased from $1.62{\times}10^{16}cm^3$ to $6.75{\times}10^{11}cm^3$ when temperature and frequency were $100^{\circ}C$, 10Hz, respectively. The $d_{33}$ and piezo-voltage coefficient of PVDF organic thin films increased from 20pPC/N to 33pC/N and $162.9{\times}10^{-3}V{\cdot}m/N$ to $283.2{\times}10^{-3}V{\cdot}m/N$, respectively. For the sake of the applications of piezoelectric sensor, we analyzed the output voltage characteristic as a function of the distance between an oscillator of 28kHz and PVDF organic thin film transducer. From this, we found that the output voltage is inversely proportional to the distance. At this time, the period was about $35.798{\mu}s$ and equal the oscillator frequency.

  • In oriental medicine, it is possible to classify each person into eight kinds of constitutions based on the eight constitutional medicine theory. We developed a piezoelectric 3-channel tactile sensor using PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film for pulse detection of the radial artery. High frequency buffer (impulse buffer), amplifier, 60 Hz noise notch filter and low pass filter were integrated on three sheets of PCB board. The pulses of the radial artery at three points were checked using our system. Each constitution of the eight ones has different combinations of pulses.

  • Many researchers have tried to develop the piezoelectric shell element and verified them with the benchmarking problem of the piezoelectric bimorph beam since there is no experimental result for the control of shell structure with piezoelectric sensor/actuator. In this paper, the experiments are designed and performed to verify the control Performance of piezoelectric sensor/actuator on the shell structure. PVDF is easy to be attached on the surface of a shell structure but makes weak control forces. On the contrary, PZT makes control forces large enough to control the structure, but it is not easy to make a PZT element with curvature. To use PVDF as an actuator, the structure should be designed as flexible as possible and the voltage amplifier could make high control voltage. PVDF actuator powered by a voltage amplifier that generates output voltage from -200 to +200 volts, shows little control performance to control the vibration of an arch type shell structure. The performance of sensor looks good and the negative velocity feedback control works perfectly. The actuator voltage seems to be too small to verify the control effect Quantitatively. An experiment with high voltage amplifier is scheduled to verify the control effect Quantitatively.

  • This paper is concerned on method of simultaneous force(stress) and temperature sensing with PVDF film. PVDF film has piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. Therefore, it senses changes of stress and temperature. But it's output is affected with two properties. Using different medium in a sensing element, this problem is solved. Two structures induce different equations that its solutions are changes of stress and temperature. This method and result is applicable in skin sensor that has complexity of material and structure.

  • The mechanical properties of composite materials may severely degrade in the presence of damage. Especially, the high-velocity impact such as bird strike, a hailstorm, and a small piece of tire or stone during high taxing, can cause considerable damage to the structures and sub-system in spite of a very small mass. However, it is not easy to detect the damage in composite plates using a single technique or any conventional methods. In this paper, the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensors were used for monitoring high-velocity impact damage initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The WT(wavelet transform) and STFT(short time Fourier transform) are used to decompose the sensor signals. A ultrasonic C-scan and a digital microscope are also used to examine the extent of the damage in each case. This research shows how various sensing techniques, PVDF sensor in particular, can be used to characterize high-velocity impact damage in advanced composite.

  • In sleep monitoring system, polysomnography (PSG) is the gold-standard but previous studies revealed that attaching numerous amount of sensors disturb sleep during the test which is the fundamental disadvantage of PSG. We suggest an unconstrained rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep monitoring method measured with polyvinylidene (PVDF) film-based sensor for the normal and the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Nine normal subjects and seventeen OSA patients have participated in the study. During REM sleep, rate and variability of respiration are known to be greater than in other sleep stages. Based on this phenomena, respiratory signals of participants were unconstrainedly measured using the PVDF-based sensor with the PSG and REM sleep were extracted from the average rate and variability of respiration. In epoch-by-epoch REM sleep detection, proposed method classified REM sleep with an average sensitivity of 72.3%, specificity of 92.5%, accuracy of 88.9%, and kappa statistic of 0.60 compared to the results of PSG. Student's t-test showed no significant difference between the results of normal and OSA group. This method is potentially applicable to REM sleep detection in homing environment or ambulatory monitoring.

  • The robot proximity and tactile sensors can be categorized into two groups: grip sensors and safety sensors. They have different performance requirements. The safety sensor should have long proximity range and fast response in order to secure enough response time before colliding with ambient objects. As for the tactile sensing function, the safety sensor need to be fast and compliant to mitigate the impact from a collision. In order to meet these requirements, we proposed and demonstrated a compliant integrated safety sensor suitable to human-friendly robots. An ultrasonic proximity sensor and a piezoelectric tactile sensor made of PVDF films have been integrated in a compliant PDMS structure. The implemented sensor demonstrated the maximum proximity range of 35 cm. The directional tolerance for 30 cm detection range was about ${\pm}15^{\circ}$ from the normal axis. The integrated PVDF tactile sensor was able to detect various impacts of up to 20 N in a controlled experimental setup.

  • A flexible polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite prototype with high piezoelectricity and force sensitivity was constructed, and its huge potential for applications such as biomechanical energy harvesting, self-powered health monitoring system, and pressure sensors was proved. The crystallization, piezoelectric, and electrical properties of the composites were characterized using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiment and customized experimental setups. The composite can sustain up to 100% strain, which is a huge improvement over monolithic PVDF fibers and other PVDF-based composites in the literature. The Young's modulus is 1.64 MPa, which is closely matched with the flexibility of the human skin, and shows the possibility for integrating PVDF/PDMS composites into wearable devices and implantable medical devices. The $300{\mu}m$ thick composite has a 14% volume fraction of PVDF fibers and produces high piezoelectricity with piezoelectric charge constants $d_{31}=19pC/N$ and $d_{33}=34pC/N$, and piezoelectric voltage constants $g_{31}=33.9mV/N$ and $g_{33}=61.2mV/N$. Under a 10 Hz actuation, the output voltage was measured at 190 mVpp, which is the largest output signal generated from a PVDF fiber-based prototype.
