In this paper, wear characteristics of PVD coatings were compared on the die surface for cold stamping of MART1470 steel sheet with the finite element analysis and the pin-on-disc wear test. Three types of PVD coatings (CrN, TiAlCrN, and MoS2TiCr(W)N) were considered for the tool surface made of STD11 material. The stamping process of an auto-body part was analyzed with the finite element method. Ranges of process variables for the wear test such as contact pressure, relative speed, and sliding distance were predicted from analysis results. In order to quantitatively analyze wear characteristics of each coating, the amount of wear was measured and compared according to process variables with the pin-on-disc wear test. The influence of each process variable was investigated and the wear characteristics of the three coating layers were quantitatively compared. It was confirmed that the wear characteristics of MoS2TiCr(W)N coating were better than those of CrN and TiAlCrN. It was noted that the proposed prediction approach could predict and respond to the wear phenomenon occurring in the stamping process.

In this study, effect of sputtering on the plasma-nitriding substrate and before PVD coating on the microstucture, microhardness, surface roughness and the adhesion strength of CrZrN thin films were investigated. Experimental results showed that this sputtering process not only removed surface compound layer which formed during a plasma nitriding process but also induced an alteration of the surface of plasma nitrided substrate in terms of microhardness distribution, surface roughness. This in turn affected the adhesion strength of PVD coatings. After sputtering, microhardness distribution showed general decrease and the surface roughness became increased slightly. The critical shear stress measured from the scratch test on the CrZrN coatings showed an approximately 1.4 times increase in the adhesion strength through the sputtering prior to the coating and this could be attributed to a complete removal of compound layer from the plasma nitrided surface and to an increase in the surface roughness after sputtering.

In this study, effect of sputtering after plasma nitriding and before PVD coating on the microstucture, microhardness, surface roughness and the adhesion strength of CrN thin films were investigated. Experimental results showed that this sputtering process not only removed surface compound layer which formed during a plasma nitriding process but also induced an alteration of the surface of plasma nitrided substrate in terms of microhardness distribution and surface roughness, which in turn affected the adhesion strength of PVD coatings. After sputtering, microhardness distribution showed general decrease and the surface roughness became increased slightly. The critical shear stress measured from the scratch test on the CrN coatings showed an approximately twice increase in the binding strength through the sputtering prior to the coating and this could be attributed to a complete removal of compound layer from the plasma nitrided surface and to an increase in the surface roughness after sputtering.
In order to accumulate data to lower the friction coefficient of a press mold, tribological tests were performed before and after coating SM45C with a PVC/PO film and plasma coating (CrN, concept). The ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM)-treated material had a nano-size surface texture, high surface hardness, and large and deep compressive residual stress formation. Even when the load was doubled, the small amount of abrasion, small weight of the abrasion, and width and depth of the abrasion did not increase as much as those of untreated materials. A comparison of the weight change before and after the tribological test with the CrN and the concept coating material and that of the untreated material showed that the wear loss of the concept coating material and P-UNSM treated material (that is, the UNSM treated material treated with the concept coating) showed a tendency to decrease by approximately 55-75%. Concept 100N had a lower friction coefficient of about 0.6, and P-UNSM-30-100N showed almost the same curve as concept 100N and had a low coefficient of friction of about 0.6. The concept multilayer coating had a thickness of $5.32{\mu}m$. In the beginning, the coefficient of friction decreased because of the plasma coating, but it started to increase from about 250-300 s. After about 350 s, the coefficient of friction tended to approach the friction coefficient of the SM45C base metal. The SGV-280F film-attached test specimen was slightly pushed back and forth, but the SM45C base material was not exposed due to abrasion. The friction coefficient was 0.22, which was the lowest, and the tribological property was the best in this study.

This paper was designed to assess the adhesive properties of hard coatings on non-nitrided and nitrided various tool steels. Estimations of adhesion were done to scratch test which is mainly used in hard coating. The critical load$(L_c)$ between coating and substrate is defined through analysis of frictional load vs. normal load curve, signals of acoustic emission and optical observations. Coatings employed in this study are TiN, CrN and TiAlN, tools as substrates are STD11, STD61 and SKH51. It was classified to substrates with/without intermediate nitrided layer and hard coatings on substrate were deposited by arc PVD. Results showed that harder substrates and coatings give higher values of critical loads.

For this study, CrAlN multilayer coatings were deposited on SKD61 substrates using a multi-arc ion plating technique. The structural characteristics of the CrAlN multilayer coatings were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the adhesion of the coatings was assessed through scratch testing, and the mechanical strength was evaluated using nanoindentation and tribometric tests for frictional properties. The results show that the CrAlN multilayer coatings possess a uniform and dense structure with excellent mechanical strength. Hardness measurements indicated that the CrAlN coatings have high hardness values, and both the coating adhesion and wear resistance were found to be improved compared to CrN. The addition of aluminum is anticipated to contribute to enhanced durability and wear resistance.
The tribological behavior of CrMoN films with respect to surface chemistry was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All of the films were prepared from a hybrid PVD system consisting of DC unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP) sources. The tribological property of the films was evaluated by a friction coefficient using a Ball-on-disk type tribometer. The chemistry of wear track was analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and XPS. The friction coefficient was measured to be 0.4 for the CrMoN film, which is lower than that of a monolithic CrN film. EDS and XPS results imply the formation of an oxide layer on the coating surface, which was identified as molybdenum oxide phases, known to be a solid lubricant during the wear test.

This study conducted the wear tests on bending punches coated with PVD CrN and examined the surface quality of the product formed by each punch in the forming of uncoated TRIP1180 sheets. The study quantitatively estimated the surface quality of the product by measuring the roughness and imaging the product surface. The correlation between the punch wear depth and the product surface roughness was quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that before failure occurs, the product roughness was comparable with that of the as-received, and the product surface was smooth without scratches and defects. However, after failure, the punch wear is caused by fretting wear mechanism, and a punch whose coating is not completely peeled plows the product surface, resulting in severe scratches with grooves and ridges on the product surface. Severe wear on the punch surface caused by fretting wear can rapidly degrade the product surface quality as it is directly affected by the punch surface condition, and the product surface quality accurately reflects the punch wear condition.

Phase evolution and tribological behavior of Cr-Mo-N multi compositional films with different interlayer were investigated. The films were deposited by hybrid PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) system consisted of dc unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP) sources. A pure molybdenum (Mo) was used as sputtering target and also a pure Cr was used as AIP target to form the Cr-Mo-N films. Various growth planes were found, no textured surface, in all of the multi composition films. Maximum value of microhardness was measured in Cr-Mo-N film with Mo interlayer as 29 GPa. Composition film was mainly showed the aspect of the adhesive wear than CrN film. The friction coefficient was decreased from 0.6 for pure CrN coating to 0.35 for Cr-Mo-N film with Mo interlayer. This result may come from the formation of metal oxide tribo-layer which is known as solid lubricant during the wear test.
