  • New concept of coating process, which is called Electro Magnetic Levitation-Physical Vapour deposition (EML-PVD) was developed and investigated. Zinc coating was performed and succeeded for the first time on the steel strip (Cold-rolled Steel) in a continuos pilot line using the EML-PVD process which is specialized in the high deposition rate and high vapor yield. EML-PVD will be expected to be the next generation coating technology to be applied to the steel industry.

  • This is the first release of an interim report on the development of coating technology of Zn-Mg alloy layers on steel strip by EML-PVD (electromagnetic levitation - physical vapor deposition) process in an air-to-air type continuous PVD pilot plant. It intends to introduce a basic principle of the EML-PVD process together with the high speed PVD pilot plant built in Posco. Due to the agitation effect provided by the high frequency induction coil, simultaneous evaporation of Zn and Mg from a droplet could produce alloy coating layers with Mg content of 6% to 12% depending on the composition of the droplet inside the coil. For its superior corrosion resistance, Zn-Mg alloy coated steel would be a very promising material for automotive, electrical appliances, and construction applications.

  • In this study, the effect of the processing parameters in PVD process on the size and the distribution of deposited Si quantum dots was quantitatively investigated by computational simulation utilizing Monte Carlo method. The processing parameters, substrate temperature, deposition time, gas pressure and target-substrate distance were selected as variables since those parameters are often selected as variables in PVD experiments. It is predicted that the density of $1{\times}10^{12}cm^{-2}$ Si quantum dots can be deposited on the substrate when the deposition rate is 0.05 nm/sec at the substrate temperature of 490${\circ}$, deposition time of 7 sec, gas pressure of 3 mTorr and target-substrate distance of 8 cm.

  • Electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) process has currently been applied to thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aircraft engines. Due to unique columnar structure, EB-PVD TBCs have advantages in resistances to thermal shock and thermal cycle for their applications, compared to films prepared by plasma spray By the EB-PVD equipment, we successfully obtained yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) layer which has columnar and feather like structure including a large amount of nano size pores and gaps. The EB-PVD technique has been developed for coating functional perovskite type oxides such as (La, Sr)MnO3. Electrode properties have been improved by interface and structural control.

  • The coated steels, mainly with zinc by either hot-dip galvanizing or electroplating, are widely used for panels of automotive, electrical appliances and construction, whose size of world market have reached 130 million tons in 2008. Current issues for the coated steels can be integrated in terms of high functionality, low cost, environment-friend and available resource. The best solution can be provided if thin layer coating with higher quality is produced by an eco-friendly process, and PVD, physical vapor deposition, can be an alternative practice to existing coating processes. PVD technologies have been very common ones in electronic and semiconductor industries, but recognized as non-profitable processes for the coated steels due to low process speed and lack of continuous operation skills. Systematic researches from 1990s in Europe, even though discouraged by a shutdown of the first Japanese PVD coating plant in 1999, have realized several continuous PVD coating plants, and also enhanced launching of developments in steel industries. To be successful with PVD coating technologies over existing ones, productivity to meet economics should be created from a highly sophisticated process. Some PVD technologies fit for the high-speed process will be introduced together with experiences from industrial applications.

  • Poly vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) membrane were prepared by the electrospinning technique. We had applied a DLC coating process and then the surface of the membrane and the contact angle change was investigated. Electrospun fibrous PVdF-HFP membrane surface became to wrinkled shape by Ar plasma treatment and treatment conditions. The wrinkled surface of PVdF-HFP membrane became super-hydrophilic. However, after DLC coating process, it became super-hydrophobic. The resulting surfaces were characterized by water contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Resultantly it was recognized that the wettability characteristics of the membrane surfaces depended on the chemical composition and surface morphology.

  • Brazing is an important manufacturing process in the fabrication of Heavy Water Reactor fuel rods, in which bearing and spacer pads are joined to Zircaloy-4 cladding tubes. The physical vapor deposition(PVD) technique is currently used to deposit metallic Be on the surfaces of pads as a filler metal. Amorphous Zr-Be binary alloys which are manufactured by rapid solidification process are under developing to substitute the conventional PVD-Be coating. In the present study, brazed joint with PVD and amorphous alloys of $Zr_{1-x}Be_{x}(0.3{\le}x{\le}0.5)$ as filler metals are compared by mechanism, microstructure and hardness. The thickness of brazed joint with amorphous alloys became much smaller than that of PVD-Be. The erosion of base metal did not occur in the brazed joint with amorphous alloys. The brazing mechanism for PVD-Be seems to be Be diffusion into Zr-4 with capillary action resulting from eutectic reaction while that for amorphous alloys are associated with the liquid phase formation in the brazed joint. The brazed joint microstructure with PVD-Be consists of dendrite while that with amorphous alloys is globular. The $Zr_{0.7}Be_{0.3}$ alloy shows the smooth interface with little erosion in the base metal and is recommended a most suitable brazing filler metal for Zircaloy-4.

  • A new advanced combined PVD/CVD technique of DLC film deposition has been developed. Deposition of a DLC film was carried out using a pulsed carbon arc discharge in vapor hydrocarbon atmosphere. The arc plasma enhancing CVD process promotes dramatic increase in the deposition rate and decrease of compressive stress as well as improvement of film thickness uniformity compared to that obtained with a single PVD pulsed arc process. The optical spectroscopy investigation reveals great increase in radiating components of $C_2$ Swan system molecular bands due to acetylene molecules decomposition. AFM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS and nano-indentation were used to characterize DLC films. The method ensures obtaining a new superhard DLC nano-material for deposition of protective coatings onto various industrial products including those used in medicine.

  • The thermo-chemical treatment (TCT) process was applied to achieve surface hardening of CP titanium. The following three different surface modification conditions were tested so that the best surface hardening process could be selected:(a) PVD, (b) TCT+PVD, and (c) TCT+Aging+PVD. These specimens were tested and analyzed in terms of surface roughness, wear, friction coefficient, and the gradient of hardening from the surface of the matrix. The three test conditions were all beneficial to improve the surface hardness of CP titanium. Moreover, the TCT treated specimens, that is, (b) and (c), showed significantly improved surface hardness and low friction coefficients through the thickness up to $100{\mu}m$. This is due to the functionally gradient hardened surface improvement by the diffused interstitial elements. The hardened surface also showed improvement in bonding between the PVD and TCT surface, and this leads to improvement in wear resistance. However, TCT after aging treatment did not show much improvement in surface properties compared to TCT only. For the best surface hardening on CP titanium, TCT+PVD has advantages in surface durability and economics.
