  • The objective of this study was to determine if MWF(metalworking fluids) mass sampled on PVC filter lose during flowing airstream and desiccating and to present direction to correct the underestimated MWF mass. Flowing airstream caused MWF sampled on PVC filter to be breakthrough and lost. Loss of MWF on PVC filter increased in proportion to time of flowing airstream. Meanwhile, loss of MWF was observed during desiccating without flowing airstream. Vapor pressure of MWF is so low that it would not normally be thought to evaporate. However, MWF mist sampled on PVC filter has so great a surface area that loss by flowing airstream and evaporation can be appreciable. Loss between fresh and used MWF was also different. Those study results mean that NIOSH method(#0500 method) to take airborne MWF mist with PVC filter is not valid. Media to sample airborne MWF accurately still have not been introduced. It seems to be needed to estimate how much MWF on PVC filter may be lost during sampling. Regression model between sampling time including 1 day desiccating and total loss of MWF was "Total loss(%)=18.4%+0.06 sampling time(p=0.000, r2=49.6%)". This model help correct MWF lost when one measures airborne MWF using NIOSH # 0500 method.

  • Because liquids with high molecular weight such as mineral oil have low vapor pressure at room temperature, it is generally thought to be difficult to lose them to evaporation. However, when they are dispersed into air in small droplets during application in machining processes, their surface area becomes considerably higher. To determine the potential for metalworking fluids (MWF) filter losses, MWF mist was generated and collected on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters in test chamber. After collected MWF was exposed to clean air during designated period (range 10~240 minutes) and the filters were desiccated, losses were evaluated. As duration of clean air passing through PVC filter increased, loss of MWF gradually increased. MWF lost after 10 minutes ranged form 12.4 % to 21.8 % of the original loading mass, on average 53.3 % of the total loss. These results indicate that significant mass of MWF collected on PVC filters can be lost at the beginning of air sampling. Loss of MWF collected on PVC filter also occurred during desiccation without active airflow. In multiple regression to identify which factors influence the loss of MWF collected on PVC filter, both duration of air passing through PVC filter and MWF age (fresh vs. used) were significant predictor (p=0.0001). Therefore, workers' exposure to MWF measured method 0500, may underestimate true concentration. Further study is needed to develop a new method to quantify the workers' exposure to airborne MWF mist accurately.

  • Plastic pipes Wrapped with synthetic filter are recently used for drainage or Collecting of Underground water. But it's use is possible only for small size of diameter less than 300mm, because large size plastic pipes are not readily availabe. For large diameter infiltration gallery, porous concrete pipes are now used, but it's heavy weight brings difficulties in making, moving and setting of the pipes. With it's conventional method of filter setting, fine sands are brought into the pipes to make trouble to lifting pumps and channels Therefore, initial construction cost and maintenance cost become high. To solve-this problem, new method is developed and tested. Small PVC pipes(diameter 14mm) are assembled at the site of construction to newly devised I beam type circls. The size of circular inpiltration gallery is optionally determined by I beam type circle which support small PVC pipes and is made of PVC amterial. This gallery are wrappd with syntheitc filter to prevent sand instruction. In this test, the diameter of 300, 400, 500mm were used. I beam type circles were made with PVC plated with thickness. t=6, 9, 12mm. Water quantity collected through the PVC circulor gallery are measured and the strengths of the gallery. 1. Allowable setting depth of gallery pipe below graund for the case of t=6mm, D=500mm is 2.72m. 2. Collected water quantity depends on soil texture, depth of water grandient of water surface, filter material angle of setting etc. 3. About 126% of water quantity collected from the one gallery pipe measured in two gallery pipes of two parallel installation.

  • Recently, pilot studies showed an evidence of reduction of airborne hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), on PVC filter during air sampling and storage. However, the information on this in the field was limited. Thus, we studied the reduction behaviors of airborne Cr(VI) on PVC filters during sampling and storage at three field electroplating operations. Regression between sampling time and the reduction (ratio of Cr(VI) to total Cr concentrations) was not statistically significant (p>0.05). However, the reductions in samples collected for 240 ~ 340 minutes were significantly higher than those for 30 - 60 minutes. On the other hand, another experiment showed a good correlation (r=0.96) between sampling time and the reduction without an exceptional value. Storage temperature was not a factor affecting the reduction of Cr(VI) collected on PVC filter. The loss of Cr(VI) samples stored in alkali solution (2% NaOH/3% Na$_2$CO$_3$) was significantly lower than that stored in vial according to NIOSH method (p<0.05). Thus, dipping Cr(VI) samples into alkali solution was a storage method to minimize tile reduction.

  • Hexavalent chromium may reduce on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filter during sampling and storage of sample. Recently, new or modified filters for preventing Cr(VI) from the reduction has been introduced. Thus, this study was performed to compare the reduction behaviors of Cr(VI) on several sampling filters and to find the most appropriate filter for airborne Cr(VI) sampling in plating operation. The results were as follows. 1. There were statistically significant differences among PVC, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). glass fiber (GF) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) filters in recovery rates of spiked Cr(VI) samples by storage time(p<0.05). There was no significant difference between PVC and PTFE filters(p>0.05). The PVC and PTFE filters showed higher recoveries than GF and PVDF filters(p<0.05). 2. The quartz fiber(QF) filter treated with an alkali solution(2% NaOH/3% Na$_2$CO$_3$, 1% NaOH) showed a significantly higher recovery of Cr(VI) by storage time than other filters(GF and QF filter)(p<0.05). There was no difference in recovery of Cr(VI) between alkali-treated and untreated GF it filters(p>0.05). But the QF filters treated with two alkali solution showed a significantly higher recovery than the untreated QF filter(p<0.05). There was no significant difference in recovery of Cr(VI) between QF filters treated with 1% NaOH and 2% NaOH/3% Na$_2$CO$_3$(p>0.05). In conclusion, treatment of QF fillers with alkali solution was most effective in protecting from the reduction of Cr(VI).

  • Penicillin sensor was prepared by immobilizing penicillinase (Pcase) on $H^{+}$-selective carboxylated poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC-COOH) membrane or cellulose filter membrane. The immobilization techniques are as follows. Pcase was immobilized with GTH on $H^{+}$-selective PVC-COOH membrane or some amount of BSA was dropped on that membrane. Another method to make immobilization is to mix type I Pcase with GTH and drop on a cellulose filter membrane. According to immobilization techniques, there were some differences in response properties of enzyme electrodes, however, all electrodes responded to Pcase-resistant penicillin derivatives. Pcase immobilized on cellulose filter membrane with $H^{+}$-selective PVC membrane eletrode was more stable and more sensitive to penicillinase-resistant penicillin derivatives than any other immobilization techniques.

  • QRS detection of ECG is the most popular and easy way to detect cardiac-disease. But it is difficult to analyze the ECG signal because of various noise types. Also in the healthcare system that must continuously monitor people's situation, it is necessary to process ECG signal in realtime. In other words, the design of algorithm that exactly detects QRS wave using minimal computation and classifies PVC by analyzing the persons's physical condition and/or environment is needed. Thus, efficient QRS detection and PVC classification based on profiling method is presented in this paper. For this purpose, we detected QRS through the preprocessing method using morphological filter, adaptive threshold, and window. Also, we applied profiling method to classify each patient's normal cardiac behavior through hash function. The performance of R wave detection, normal beat and PVC classification is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate the average of 99.77% in R wave detection and the rate of 0.65% in normal beat classification error and 93.29% in PVC classification.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy and precision of airborne metal analysis using polyvinyl chloride(PVC) membrane filter by pretreatment methods. Methods: A total of 75 spiked PVC samples for Cr, Fe and Mn ranged from 6 ug/sample to 40 ug/sample were used to evaluate recovery rates for three pretreatment methods: acid extraction, hot plate ashing and microwave digestion. For Mn, an additional 75 spiked mixed cellulose ester(MCE) membrane filters were analysed to compare the recovery rates of PVC samples. All samples were analysed with an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer(ICP-OES) and manganese samples were additionally analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometer(AAS). Results: The overall mean recovery rates of PVC samples for Cr, Fe and Mn were 90% or higher regardless of pretreatment methods, but there were statistically significant differences in recovery rates for Cr(p<0.05) and Mn(p<0.01) samples by pretreatment methods. The biases and the coefficient variations of PVC samples for three metals pretreated with three kinds of pretreatment methods ranged from 1.7% to 4.7% and from 1.6% to 6.5%, respectively. The manganese PVC samples pretreated by microwave digestion and analyzed with ICP-OES had the lowest bias at 1.9% and also showed lower bias than the bias for MCE samples, 2.7%. Conclusions: In order to accurately analyze the metals sampled with PVC membrane filters, microwave digestion and ICP-OES can be recommended.

  • Premature ventricular contractions are the most common of all arrhythmias and may cause more serious situation like ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in some patients. Therefore, the detection of this arrhythmia becomes crucial in the early diagnosis and the prevention of possible life threatening cardiac diseases. Most methods for detecting arrhythmia require pp interval, or the diversity of P wave morphology, but they are difficult to detect the p wave signal because of various noise types. Thus, it is necessary to use noise-free R wave. So, the new approach for the detection of PVC is presented based on the rhythm analysis and the beat matching in this paper. For this purpose, we removed baseline wandering of low frequency band and made summed signals that are composed of two high frequency bands including the frequency component of QRS complex using the wavelet filter. And then we designed R wave detection algorithm using the adaptive threshold and window through RR interval. Also, we developed algorithm to classify PVC using RR interval. The performance of R wave and PVC detection is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate average detection rate of 99.76%, sensitivity of 99.30% and specificity of 98.66%; accuracy respectively for R wave and PVC detection.
