  • A photovoltaic/thermal (PVT)solar system is the solar technology that allows for simultaneous conversion of solar energy into both electricity and heat. This paper compared the performance of PVT system with a conventional PV module and solar collector and analyzed electrical and thermal efficiency of PVT system in terms of solar irradiance and inlet temperature of the working fluid. Based on the experimental data, thermal and electrical efficiencies of he glazed PVT system were57.9% and14.27% under zero reduced temperature condition which were lower by 13.6% than the solar thermal absorber plate and by 0.08% than the PV module respectively. For the unglazed PVT system it had lower thermal efficiency than the solar thermal absorber plate but higher electrical performance than the PV module due to the cooling effect by the working fluid. However, total efficiency of the glazed PVT system was72.2% which was higher than combined efficiencies of the solar collector and PV module. Besides, total efficiency of the PVT system would be much higher if calculated based on unit area.

  • The temperature of PV modules that integrated into building facades or roof increases that could reduce the electrical efficiency of the PV system. In order to incresae PV system's efficiency it is very important to remove the heat from the PV modules. For this purpose, hot air can be extracted from the space between PV modules and building envelope, and used for heating in buildings. The solar collector utilizing this thermal effect is called photovoltaic-thermal(PVT) solar collector. This paper compares the experimental performance of building-integrated PVT collectors that applied on building roof and facade. There are two different case: a roof-integrated PVT type and a facade-integrated PVT type. The experimental results show that the collected thermal energy of the roof-integrated type was 24% higher, compared to that of the facade-integrated.

  • BIPV/T (Building Intergrated PhotoVoltaic/Thermal) is combined system produces electricity and thermal energy. The heat from PV modules should be removed for better electrical performance, and can be converted into useful thermal energy. The efficiency of the PV system's performance will raise by the system removes heat from the PV. The test system is installed to top floor of the experimental house in the KEPCO Research Institute. The planned experiment is following. (1) Supplying heat energy to top floor. (2) Supplying heat and cool energy to thermal storage in the bottom of the top floor. (3) Supplying heat energy to EHP for improved performance. The experimental performance is executed from 13th February to 13th March, 2012. The solar generation of electricity is 4.04kWh under the horizontal solar radiation is $1000W/m^2$ and the air temperature is $25^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper proposes photovoltaic thermal hybrid module to get the electrical and thermal performance of building integrated photovoltaic(BIPV) system. BIPV system is decreased the system efficiency because output of PV is decreased by the thermal rising on generating. In order to improve the efficiency of BIPV module, water cooling system is applied and generated thermal is used the warm water system. Water cooling system uses the flux control algorithm considering water temperature and power loss. Electrical and thermal performance of proposed photovoltaic thermal hybrid module is confirmed through the actual experiment and herby proved the valid of this paper.

  • Hybrid PV/Thermal systems consisting of photovoltaic module and thermal collector can produce the electricity and thermal energy. The solar radiation increases the temperature of PV modules, resulting in the decrease of their electrical efficiency. Accordingly hot air can be extracted from the space between the PV panel and roof, so the efficiency of the PV module increases. The extracted thermal energy can be used in several ways, increasing the total energy output of the system. This study describes a basic type of PV/T collector using water. In order to analyze the performance of the collector, the experiment was conducted. The result showed that the thermal efficiency was 17% average and the electrical efficiency of the PV module was about $10.2%{\sim}11.5%$, both depending on solar radiation, inlet water temperature and ambient temperature.

  • The integration of PV modules into building facades or roof could raise their temperature that results in the reduction of PV system's electrical power generation. Hot air can be extracted from the space between PV modules and building envelope, and used for heating in buildings. The extraction of hot air from the space will enhance the performance of BIPV systems. The solar collector utilizing these two aspects is called PV/T(photovoltaic/thermal) solar collector. This paper compares the experimental performance of two different types of air type PV/T collector units: the base case of a collector unit with 10cm gap for forced ventilation and the other unit with copper pin attached to PV module to enhance its thermal performance. The experimental results shows that the base case unit had the overall efficiency of 41.9% and the improved unit with copper pin attached to PV module had 50.1% efficiency. For these air type PV/T units, the forced ventilation of the air space improved the electrical performance as well as the thermal performance.

  • Building-Integrated Photovoltaic System(BIPV) has a muti-functional to generate electrical power and be able to be exterior materials for building. When PV modules are applied as envelope materials for building, the PV modules are considered on characteristics of the thermal effect and performance of PV module to optimize BIPV system synthetically. The purpose of this study is analysis of the changes of temperature and performance on PV modules. after installing four PV modules that have different ventilation type of PV module backside. Measurement results on this experiment is that the ventilation of PV module backside can control elevated module temperature and improve the performance of PV module. So, the technology development on the ventilation of PV module is suggested introducing effective BIPV system.
