  • Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed and monitored at the field demonstration test center (FDTC) in Korea in October 2002. Before long-term field testing of installed PV systems, the performances of PV components were evaluated and compared through short-term performance tests of each of the PV system components such as power conditioning system and PV module under standard test conditions. A data acquisition system has been constructed for measuring and analyzing the performance of PV systems to observe the overall effect of environmental conditions on their operation characteristics. Performances of PV systems have been evaluated and analyzed not only for component perspective (PV array, power conditioning unit) but also for global perspective (system efficiency, capacity factor, electrical power energy) by review of the field test and loss factors of the systems. These results indicate that it is highly imperative to develop an optimum design technology of grid connected PV systems. The objective of this paper is not only to evaluate and analyze the performance of domestic PV systems application through long-term field testing at FDTC but also to develop evaluation, analysis and optimum technology for long-term stability and reliability of grid-connected PV systems in Korea.

  • Since large and small scale photovoltaic(PV) systems have been commercialized in many countries, it is necessary to assess the effects of PV systems on the electric power system. For this, the development of accurate simulation model of PV arrays is very important. PSCAD/EMTDC, a widely used simulation tool for analyzing the transient behavior of electrical apparatus and networks, does not have a standard model of a PV array. Therefore in order to simulate the PV array, users have to develop their own simulation model. However, the block-diagram-based model is very complicated, and it is hard to modify the model parameters. In this study, we develop the user-defined model of a PV array by using the Design Editor, which is provided by PSCAD program. The mathematical model of a PV array and the method to determine the parameters of nonlinear I-V equation are implemented in a Fortran code. The graphical user interface provides the users with easy and simple way to modify the PV array parameters and simulation conditions. In order to help the users, this model also provides the parameters of 10 commercial PV arrays.

  • PV system performance is dependent on different irradiations and temperature values in addition to the capability of the employed PV inverter / maximum power point tracker (MPPT) circuit or algorithm. Therefore, it would be appropriate to use a PV simulator capable of producing identical repeatable conditions regardless of the weather to evaluate the performance of inverter / MPPT circuits and algorithms. In accordance with this purpose, a photovoltaic (PV) array simulator is presented in this paper. The simulator is designed to generate current-voltage (I-V) and power-voltage (P-V) curves of a PV panel. Series connected cascaded modules constitute the basic part of the simulator. This feature also allows for the modeling of PV arrays since the number of modules can be increased and high voltage values can be reached with the simulator. In addition, the curves obtained at the simulator output become similar to the actual curves of sample PV panels with an increase in the number of modules. In order to show the validity of the proposed simulator, it was simulated for various situations such as panels under full irradiance and partial shading conditions. After completing simulations, experiments were realized to support the simulation study. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed simulator will be very useful for researchers to carry out PV studies under laboratory conditions.

  • Recently, electric power usages and peak loads from buildings are increasing due to higher outdoor air temperatures and/or abnormal climate during the summer period. As one of the eco-friendly measures, a renewable energy system has been received much attention. Particularly, interest on a photovoltaic (PV) system using solar energy has been rapidly increasing in a building sector due to its broad applicability. In using the PV system, one of important factors is the PV efficiency. The normal PV efficiency is determined based on the STC(Standard Test Condition) and the NOCT(Nominal Operating Cell Temperature) performance test. However, the actual PV efficiency is affected by the temperature change at the module surface. Especially, higher module temperatures generally reduce the PV efficiency, and it leads to less power generation from the PV system. Therefore, the analysis of the relation between the module temperature and PV efficiency is required to evaluate the PV performance during the summer period. This study investigates existing algorithms for calculating module surface temperatures and analyzes resultant errors with the algorithms by comparing the measured module temperatures.

  • Three phase power flow is commonly considered exclusively for the distribution systems, where single or double phase circuits may be present and loads may not always balanced between the three phases. This paper deals with modelling and analysis of grid connected photovoltaic (PV) system in three-phase power flow, with the consideration of the PV inverter output power limitations.

  • The number of applications of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in power generation grids has increased in the last decade because of their ability to generate efficient and reliable power in a variety of low installation in domestic applications. Various PV converter topologies have therefore emerged, among which the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is very attractive due to its modularity and transformerless features. The modeling and control of the MMC has become an interesting issue due to the extremely large expansion of PV power plants at the residential scale and due to the power quality requirement of this application. This paper proposes a novel control method of MMC which is used to directly integrate the photovoltaic arrays with the power grid. Traditionally, a closed loop control has been used, although circulating current control and capacitors voltage balancing in each individual leg have remained unsolved problem. In this paper, the integration of model predictive control (MPC) and traditional closed loop control is proposed to control the MMC structure in a PV grid tied mode. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed control model.

  • In this paper, we study the electric characteristics of shading effects in photovoltaic module in case of outdoor operation. When fabricating PV module, solar cells are connected serially to obtain the high voltage because of its low open circuit voltage. And total current is determined by lowest current among solar cells. When the shading happens on PV module's surface, the current of shaded solar cell determine the total current flow. Because of this, generally by-pass diode is installed on junction box. The bypass diode operate when revered and shaded solar cell's voltage is over 0.6 voltage. The reverse-biased solar cell gives reduced maximum power of PV module and might give negative effect on durability. So, adequate by-pass installation and selection is needed.

  • Transparent photovoltaics (PV) are used in various applications such as building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). However, crystalline silicon (c-Si) is not used for developing transparent PV due to its opaque nature. Here. we fabficate the three holes in 6-inch c-Si solar cells using laser scribing process with an opening area ratio of about 6.8% for transparent c-Si solar modules. Moreover, we make the shingled strings using the perforated cells. Our 7 interconnected shingled string PV cells with 21 holes show a solar to power conversion of 5.721 W. In next work, we will fabricate a transparent c-Si PV module with perforated strings.
