Morphology and Mechanical Properties of Polyurethane/Organoclay Nanocomposites (폴리우레탄/유기화 점토 나노복합체의 모폴로지와 기계적 물성)

  • Polyurethane (PU) was prepared with the compositions of polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG) having two different molecular weight (250, 1000 g/mol). The optimum composition of PTMG 250/1000 was 60/40 based on the mechanical properties. PU/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared with several kinds of organoclay. The mechanical properties of nanocomposite prepared with 93A were considerable. The improvement in tensile strength and modulus for PU/organoclay nanocomposite with the application of ultrasound compared to the PU/organoclay nanocomposite without the application of ultrasound was factors of 1.2, and hardness (shore A type) increased from 90 to 95. The difference in thermal degradation was not observed. The results of transmission electron micrographs and X-ray measurements suggest that the intercalated organoclay in PU matrix was observed.

Evaluation of nuclear material accountability by the probability of detection for loss of Pu (LOPu) scenarios in pyroprocessing

  • A new methodology to analyze the nuclear material accountability for pyroprocessing system is developed. The $Pu-to-^{244}Cm$ ratio quantification is one of the methods for Pu accountancy in pyroprocessing. However, an uncertainty in the $Pu-to-^{244}Cm$ ratio due to the non-uniform composition in used fuel assemblies can affect the accountancy of Pu. A random variable, LOPu, is developed to analyze the probability of detection for Pu diversion of hypothetical scenarios at a pyroprocessing facility considering the uncertainty in $Pu-to-^{244}Cm$ ratio estimation. The analysis is carried out by the hypothesis testing and the event tree method. The probability of detection for diversion of 8 kg Pu is found to be less than 95% if a large size granule consisting of small size particles gets sampled for measurements. To increase the probability of detection more than 95%, first, a new Material Balance Area (MBA) structure consisting of more number of Key Measurement Points (KMPs) is designed. This multiple KMP-measurement for the MBA shows the probability of detection for 8 kg Pu diversion is greater than 96%. Increasing the granule sample number from one to ten also shows the probability of detection is greater than 95% in the most ranges for granule and powder sizes.

  • Polyurethane(PU) microgels were synthesized from poly(caprolactone) diol(PCD) and/or poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG), diisocyanate and 1,2,6-hexane triol by solution polymerization method. A critical gelation concentration of the PU microgels with, mole ratios of PCD/PEG were the important factors influencing the formation and property microgel or macrogels. The physical and thermal properties of the PU microgels prepared with depending upon the structure of diisocyanate, mole ratio of PCD/PEG, and molecular weight of PEG were investigated. It was found that PU microgels were distributed by polydisperse, spherical small particles below 300nm and showed the properties of low viscosity.

Flammability and Released Toxic Halogen Gases during Combustion of Flame-Retardant Flexible Polyurethane Foam (난연 연질 폴리우레탄 반도체의 난연성과 연소시 발생되는 유독성 할로겐 기체 검출에 관한 연구)

  • Flammability, and released toxic halogen gases during combustion about two kinds of flame-retardant flexible foam(F.R. flexible PV foam) were investigated. One of the above was F.R. flexible PU foam with the containment of halogen and the other was manufactured with pure flexible PU foam in aqueous solution of alumina trihydrate(ATH) and dried 4 hours at 10$0^{\circ}C$. Flammability by L.O.I and UL94 HF-1 of the two materials were similarly shown. And combustion gases were analyzed with GC-Mass. HCI, CI$_2$ and HF were detected at both halogen being contained F.R. flexible PU foam and ATH dolng one The reason, to find halogen gases from burning ATH-containing F, R. flexible PU foam which wasn't used for any halogenated F.R., could be considered as by using trichlorofluoromethane with blowing agent to make PU foam. The relative quanity of relesed halogen gases of F.R. flexible PU foam with the containment of halogen had been indicated tree times HCI and CI$_2$, two times HF than ATH containing, respectively.

Fast PU Decision Method Using Coding Information of Co-Located Sub-CU in Upper Depth for HEVC (상위깊이의 Sub-CU 부호화 정보를 이용한 HEVC의 고속 PU 결정 기법)

  • HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) achieves high coding efficiency by employing a quadtree-based coding unit (CU) block partitioning structure and various prediction units (PUs), and the determination of the best CU partition structure and the best PU mode based on rate-distortion (R-D) cost. However, the computation complexity of encoding also dramatically increases. In this paper, to reduce such encoding computational complexity, we propose three fast PU mode decision methods based on encoding information of upper depth as follows. In the first method, the search of PU mode of the current CU is early terminated based on the sub-CBF (Coded Block Flag) of upper depth. In the second method, the search of intra prediction modes of PU in the current CU is skipped based on the sub-Intra R-D cost of upper depth. In the last method, the search of intra prediction modes of PU in the lower depth's CUs is skipped based on the sub-CBF of the current depth's CU. Experimental results show that the three proposed methods reduce the computational complexity of HM 14.0 to 31.4%, 2.5%, and 23.4% with BD-rate increase of 1.2%, 0.11%, and 0.9%, respectively. The three methods can be applied in a combined way to be applied to both of inter prediction and intra prediction, which results in the complexity reduction of 34.2% with 1.9% BD-rate increase.

A Sensitive Detection of Actinide Species in Solutions Using a Capillary Cell (모세관 셀을 이용한 수용액 내 악티나이드 화학종의 고감도 검출)

  • Absorption spectra for a quantitative analysis of actinide elements such as U(VI) and Pu(V) were measured by using a liquid waveguide capillary cell (LWCC) which has an optical path length of 1.0 meter. In order to investigate radioactive elements, a LWCC is installed in a glove box and is coupled to a spectrophotometer with optical fibers. Limits of detection (LOD) for the system were determined as 0.74 and 0.35 M with molar absorption coefficients of 8.14${\pm}$0.07 (414 nm) and 17.00${\pm}$0.16 (569 nm) $M^{-1}cm^{-1}$ for U(VI) and Pu(V) ions, respectively. The measured LOD values are about 30 times more sensitive when compared to those achievable by using a conventional quartz cell with an optical path length of 1.0 cm. As an application with an enhanced sensitivity, a quantitative analysis for micromolar concentrations of Pu(V) has been performed to decrease the uncertainty in the formation constant of the Pu(VI)-OH complex.

Determination of Transuranic Elements in Radwaste Samples from Nuclear Power Plant (원전발생 방사성폐기물 시료 중 초우란원소의 정량)

  • Transuranic elements such as Pu, Am and Cm in synthetic solution of spent nuclear fuel samples were determined by electrodeposition followed by alpha-spectrometry after separation using anion exchange and extraction chromatography in order to determine the transuranic elements in radwaste samples from nuclear power plants. Plutonium was separated by 12M HC1-0.1M HI as an eluent on anion exchange column. As a second step Am and Cm were separated in a group by DTPA-Lactic acid as the eluent on HDEHP coated column. The nuclides of $^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Am$$^{244}Cm$ separated were determined by alpha-spectrometry after electrodeposition in 0.1M $NaHSo_4$-0.53M $Na_2SO_4$buffer solution as an electrolyte. The recovery yields of $^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Am$$^{244}Cm$ were 83.8%, 85.2% and 86.3%, respectively, from the synthetic solution containing uranium and non-radioactive metal elements.

  • Polyurethane-polysiloxanes (PU/PDMS) was synthesized using 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) to overcome the weakness to the organic chemicals. The composite membranes were prepared onto porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) supports. In vapor permeation experiments, the flux increased with increasing operating temperatures and feed concentrations while the separation factors showed the opposite trend, so-called 'trade-off'. In this study, the effect of the flux on the operating temperatures was not severe since the content of the soft segments is fairly higher than that of the hard segments. The composite membrane type of PU/PDMS maintained high flux and separation factor as well when comparing with the dense type membranes.

Analysis of Electrical and Physical Property of the PU/MWNT Film and Dispersion Characteristics of MWNT According to the Solvent (용매에 따른 MWNT의 분산특성과 제조된 PU/MWNT 필름의 전기적·물리적 특성 분석)

  • This paper surveys the physical properties of the MWNT dispersion solution dispersed with the three types of solvents and of the polyurethane composite film for improvement of mechanical properties and electrical characteristics of PU/MWNT composite film. For this purpose, the MWNT dispersed solution was mixed with three types of solvent such as IPA, MEK and Toluene and then mixed with polyurethane (100part) with variation of loading content (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 part) of MWNT dispersed solution in the ultrasonic wave dispersion apparatus. And eighteen PU/MWNT composite films were prepared as specimens. The various physical properties of these PU/MWNT films were measured and discussed with the loading content of three types of MWNT dispersed solutions. The highest absorbancy among the three types of dispersed solutions was shown in the IPA/MWNT solution. But the absorbancy of PU/MWNT films was not same as the solution. The low electrical surface and volume resistivity of PU/MWNT film were shown at the condition of 20 and 10 parts loading of IPA/MWNT dispersed solution, respectively. The low triboelectricity of PU/MWNT film was shown at the condition of above 30part loading of IPA/MWNT dispersed solution. The breaking strength and strain of PU/MWNT film prepared with IPA/MWNT dispersed solution were decreased with increasing loading content of IPA/MWNT from 10 to 40 parts. The maximum breaking strength and breaking strain according to the dispersion solution were shown on the IPA/MWNT dispersed solution. The uniform dispersion of PU/MWNT film according to the loading content of MWNT solution was shown by surface image analysis on the films dispersed with IPA.

Preparation and Properties of Water-borne PU Having Ionic Center onto Flexible Side Chain (유연한 곁가지 말단에 이온성 작용기를 가지는 양이온성 수분산 PU의 제조와 물성)

  • Three isocyanate groups of IP-$75^{(R)}$ and one hydroxyl group of various amino alcohols were applied for preparing cationic type water-borne polyurthane (PU) having ionic center onto flexible side chains. Average particle size, dispersion stability, viscosity, contact angle, surface energy, glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and adhesion strength of prepared water-borne PUs were measured and analyzed with different NCO/OH mol ratios, ionomers, and neutralizing agents. It was characterized that the prepared PU has a smaller particle size and a better dispersion stability than the conventional cationic water-borne PU containing ionic centers onto main chains.
