  • Cell separation from peripheral blood was investigated using surface-modified polyurethane (PU) membranes with different functional groups. Both red blood cells and platelets could pass through unmodified PU and PU-SO$_3$H membranes, while the red blood cells preferentially passed through PU-N(C$_2$H$_{5}$ )$_2$ and PU-NHC$_2$H$_4$OH membranes. The permeation ratio of T and B cells was less than 25% for the surface-modified and unmodified PU membranes. CD34$^{+}$ cells have been recognized as various kinds of stem cells including hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells. The adhesiveness of CD34$^{+}$ cells on the PU membranes was found to be higher than that of red blood cells, platelets, T cells or B cells. Overall, the adhesiveness of blood cells on the PU membranes increased in the following order: red blood cells $\leq$ platelets < T cells $\leq$ B cells < CD34$^{+}$ cells. Treatment of PU-COOH membranes with a human albumin solution to detach adhered blood cells, allowed recovery of mainly CD34$^{+}$ cells in the permeate, while both red blood cells and platelets could be isolated in the permeate using unmodified PU membranes. The PU membranes showed different permeation and recovery ratios of specific cells depending on the functional groups attached to the membranes.mbranes.

  • The effect of diisocyanate type on the decomposition temperature of polyurethane (PU) hydrolysis was investigated in a subcritical water medium up to 250℃. PU samples were prepared using different types of diisocyanate: two aromatic diisocyanates (4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and methyl phenylene diisocyanate (TDI)), one unbranched aliphatic diisocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)), and two cyclic aliphatic diisocyanates (4,4'-methylene dicyclohexyl diisocyanate (H12MDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)). The pressure had no effect on hydrolysis in the range of 70-250 bar. The decomposition temperature of the PU samples increased in the following order: TDI-PU (199℃) < H12MDI ≈ IPDI ≈ HDI (218-220℃) < MDI-PU (237℃). This order of increase in temperature is related to the electron-donating ability of the group to connected to the nitrogen of the urethane unit. When the temperature of the (PU + water) mixture reached the specific decomposition temperature, the PU samples hydrolyzed completely within 5 min into primary amine and 1,4-butanediol. The hydrolysis products from MDI-PU and H12MDI-PU were separated into a liquid phase rich in (BD + water) and a solid low phase rich in amine, whereas the products from TDI-, IPDI-, and HDI-PU existed in a single aqueous phase.

  • Polyurethane nanocomposites with inorganic nano fillers for the improvement thermal stability were prepared by the urethane reaction. Fire retardation properties of polyurethane nanocomposites were investigated by cone calorimeter and limited oxygen index (LOI). Maximum heat release rate of MMT-PU and $Bi_2O_3-PU$ polyurethane nanocomposites were decreased as 50% than polyurethane matrix and fire retardation properties of $MMT/Bi_2O_3-PU$ nanocomposte had the best improvement. The LOI of polyurethane nanocomposites also were improved as filling fillers in the nanocomposites over 20. The maximum heat release rates of MMT-PU, $Bi_2O_3-PU\;and\;MMT/Bi_2O_3-PU$ polyurethane nanocomposites were 764, 707, $635kW/m^2$, respectively and $MMT/Bi_2O_3-PU$ polyurethane nanocomposite exhibited the highest value of fire-retardant. We confirmed that polyurethane nanocomposites improved the fire retardation properties.

  • In this study, PU-LMO was made by immobilization of LMO on urethane foam (PU) with using an EVA as a binder. PU-LMO was characterized by using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The optimal ratio of EVA/LMO for preparation of PU-LMO was 0.26 gEVA/gLMO. The adsorption of lithium ions by PU-LMO was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum removal capacity of lithium ions was 17.09 mg/g. The PU-LMO was found to have a remarkably high selectivity of lithium ions and high adsorption capacity because the distribution coefficient ($K_d$) of lithium ion was higher than those of other metal ions.

  • This paper presents a quantitative method of sequential separation of $^{90}Sr,\;^{241}Am$ and Pu nuclides with an anion exchange resin and a Sr-Spec resin. The Pu isotopes were purified with an anion exchange resin. The americium and strontium fractions were separated from the matrix elements with an oxalate co-precipitation method. Americium fraction was separated from the strontium fraction with iron co-precipitation method and purified from lanthanides with anion exchange resin. Strontium-90 was purified from other hindrance elements with the Sr-Spec resin after oxalate co-precipitation. The measurement of Pu and Am isotopes was carried out by an ${\alpha}$-spectrometer. Strontium-90 was measured by a liquid scintillation counter. The radiochemical procedure of $^{90}Sr,\;^{241}Am$ and Pu nuclides investigated in this study has been validated by application to IAEA-Reference soils.

  • Polyurethane (PU)/nylon 6 blends were prepared by melt blending with Haake Rheomix at $250^{\circ}C$. The compositions of PU/nylon 6 blends were 10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, and 50/50 (wt%). The effects of PU contents and blending time on the crystal structure, tan $\delta$, the tensile properties, and the impact behavior were investigated by means of WAXD and DMA, etc. The crystalline diffraction peaks are broadened, and their intensities are reduced with increasing PU contents and blending time. The glass transition temperature, the tensile strength, and the tensile modulus of the blends are also decreased and the elongation at break is increased. The influence of PU content on the crystal structure, tan 3, and the tensile properties of PU/nylon 6 blends is more significant than that of blending time. The impact strength of PU/nylon 6 (10/90 wt%) blends measured at 20 and $-35^{\circ}C$ could be greatly improved.

  • The 23 wt% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/15 wt% polyurethane (PU) fibers were electrospun using the conjugated nozzle at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/h and an electric field of 1 kV/cm. The formation of ${\beta}$ crystal phase in the PVDF and the PVDF/PU fibers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. After electrospinning, the asspun fibers were immersed in a boiling water and then dried at $100^{\circ}C$ in a convection oven to make a crimp phenomenon. The crimps with a diameter of $2.0{\pm}0.08{\mu}m$ were observed for the PVDF/PU fibers after hydrothermal treatment without sacrificing the extent of ${\beta}$ crystal phase. All the PU, PVDF and PVDF/PU fibers exhibited average cell viability of more than 98 %. The cell proliferation results suggested that L-929 cells adhered well to the PU, PVDF and PVDF/PU fibers and proliferated continuously with increasing time, indicating that the PVDF/PU fibers are highly applicable to the biomedical applications.

  • In the present study we investigated the relationship between the morphology and mechanical properties of electrospun polysulfone (PSF)/polyurethane (PU) blend nonwovens, by using the electrospinning process to prepare three types of electrospun nonwovens: PSF, PU and PSF/PU blends. The viscosity, conductivity and surface tension of the polymer solutions, were measured by rheometer, electrical conductivity meter and tensiometer, respectively. The electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwovens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and with a universal testing machine. The SEM results revealed that the electrospun PSF nonwoven had a structure consisting of cross-bonding between fibers, whereas the electrospun PU nonwoven showed a typical, point-bonding structure. In the electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwovens, the exact nature of the point-bonding structure depended on the PU contents. The mechanical properties of the electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwoven were affected by the structure or the morphology. With increasing PU content, the mechanical behaviors, such as Young's modulus, yield stress, tensile strength and strain, of the electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwovens were by up to 80%.

  • Sulfonated poly (ethyleneoxide)-grafted polyurethane (PU-PEO-$SO_3$) prepared by bulk modification was coated on a blood sac for electrohydraulic left ventricular assist device (ELVAD) implanted in dogs and its in vivo blood compatibility on shear stress was studied as compared with untreated Po. The effect of the wall shear stress on the protein adsorption unlike platelet adhesion is dependent on the surface characteristics of the material, although less proteins seem to be adsorbed in the region of the high shear stress. The thickness of total proteins adsorbed on PU-PEO-SOJ (400 ${\AA}$) by trans¬mission electron microscopy(TEM) was considerably lower than that of untreated PU(l,000~1,600 ${\AA}$), but PU-PEO-$SO_3$ showed high albumin adsorption, low fibrinogen and IgG adsorption, and low platelet adhesion as compared with untreated PU, suggesting that PU-PEO-$SO_3$ is more in vivo blood compatible. Therefore, it appears that such a blood compatible PU-PEO-$SO_3$ is useful for blood contacting biomaterials including artificial organs.
