  • Hybrid emulsions consisting of polyurethane and acrylic polymer were prepared by emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers and polyurethane water dispersions (PUD) as an emulsifier. At first, cationic type of PUD was synthesized with IPDI, PTMG1000, MDEA, and acetic acid. Then, acrylic monomers, such as MMA and n-BA, were copolymerized with the PUD without adding further surfactant. The tensile properties and water resistance increased with increasing acrylic monomer ratio. The hybrid emulsions showed better properties than the emulsions simply blended with the PUD and the acrylic emulsions.

  • A series of polyurethane block copolymers based on hydroxyterminated poly(dimethyl siloxane), poly(propylene glycol) and poly(tetramethylene glycol) soft segments of molecular weights 1,809, 2,000 and 2,000, respectively, were synthesized. The hard segments consisted of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender. Samples with different molar ratios were prepared. We tried to synthesize poly(dimethyl siloxane)-based polyurethane(PDMS-PU) containing a hard block as major fraction and a soft block as minor fraction for preparing toughened rigid systems. After a study of the pure PDMS-PU, poly(propylene glycol)-based polyurethane(PPG-PU) and poly(tetramethylene glycol)-based polyurethane(PTMG-PU), (mixed polyol)-based block copolymers and blends between PDMS-PU, PPG-PU and PTMG-PU were prepared, and characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry, tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy. In (mixed polyol)-based PU and in lower hard segment content blends, macro-phase separation was shown, but blends with higher hard segment contents showed significant reduction in amounts of phase separation.

  • In this study, solvent-free waterborne polyurethanes (SWPU) were synthesized with teramethylxylene diisocyanate (TMXDI), poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) and polycarprolactone (PCL) and different mole ratio of dimethylol proponicacid (DMPA). The effect of ionic contents in the solvent-free waterborn polyurethane on thermal, mechanical properties and adhesion strength were studied. Glass transition temperature (Tg) were in range of $-70{\sim}-50^{\circ}C$ and increased as PCL contents increased in polyol. With more incorporation of PCL and DMPA contents in SWPU, tensile strength, adhesion strength and heat resistance of SWPU increased, while the elongation decreased.

  • NCO terminated polyurethane prepolymers were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), poly (tetramethylene glycol)(PTMG) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA). Subsequently, waterborne polyurethanes were prepared by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymers with different types of silane coupling agents, such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMS), glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane(GPTMS), methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and aminopropyl triethoxysilane(APS). The average particle size of the waterborne polyurethane solutions was increased by adding silane coupling agents. Also, the coating films prepared from GPTMS, MPTMS and APS, exhibited better pencil hardness than those from pure waterborne polyurethane. On the other hand, the coating films from MTMS did not show an improved pencil hardness than those from pure waterborne polyurethane.

  • To improve the dyeability of polyurethane (PU) resin, low molecular weight diols containing dye site in the molecular structure was added as a chain-extender. PU resin were synthesized with the variations in the chain extender, polyol type, and hard segment/soft segment (HS/SS) ratio. When HS/SS ratio is 1.4 and dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA) or N-butyldiethanolamine (BDEA) was used as a chain extender, because of heterogeneity of reaction mechanical properties were diminished. But when N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) was used as a DCE, and HS/SS ratio lowed to 1.3, mechanical properties and dyeability improved. In particular, when linear type 1,4-BD was formulated with MDEA, hydrolysis resistance and mechanical properties of PTMG type PU was improved. And initial elasticity, tensile strength and elongation could be controlled by the variation of HS/SS ratio, DCE mixing ratio of 1,6-HD or NPG.

  • Environmentally friendly water dispersion polyurethanes containing fluorine were prepared with a fluorinated polyol having $62\%$ of fluorine $(Fluorolink^{(R)}\;M_n\;1000)$. In order to control the fluorine contents of the synthesized polyurethanes polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG2000) and $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ were mixed at assigned ratios and reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a diisocyanate used. Introducing hydrophilic anion to the polymer chain was achieved by applying dimethyl propionic acid (DMPA). The ionic groups were neutralized with triethyl amine (TEA) before dispersion into water. Chain extension was executed by adding ethylene diamine at the final stage. Mechanical properties of the polymers showed that modulus increased with increasing $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ content. Surface energy values obtained from contact angle measurement decreased with increasing $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ content up to $20\%$. We expect that the synthesized polyurethanes present reliable effect from the fluorine atoms incorporated even at a small amount of $Fluorolink^{(R)}$.

  • In this study, prepolymer was synthesized through the reaction of isoporon diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylolbutanoic acid (DMBA) based on poly (tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG) for the synthesis of water-soluble polyurethane to be used as a leather surface coating applied with ethyl acetate and piperazine. Thereafter, the piperazine was chain-extended with 0.01 M, 0.03 M, 0.05 M, and 0.07 M in the water-dispersed resin, and the tensile strength, elongation, CV (cyclic voltammetry), and solvent resistance analysis were performed. Tensile strength of the prepared sample was measured at 5.422 kgf/㎟ when the piperazine content was 0.07M, and elongation was measured as 587% when the piperazine was 0.01M. Solvent resistance analysis showed the same solvent resistance regardless of piperazine content, and the redox potential was changed according to piperazine content through CV measurement.

  • Fluorinated polyurethane elastomers were synthesized by two step polyaddition of a perfluorinated polyether diol(trade name of Fomblin $ZDOL^{\circledR}$) and diisocyanates such as 4,4'-diphenyl methane diisocyanate(MDI) and toluene 2,4-diisocyanate(TDI). In order to control the Fomblin moiety of the soft segment in the synthesized elastomers to 10~50%, polyether type polyols such as polypropylene glycol(PPG) and polytetramethylene glycol(PTMG) were mixed during the polymerization reaction. Ethylene diamine or 1,4-butane diol was used as chain extenders. The structure and average molecular weight of the produced polyurethanes were confirmed by using FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$, DSC, and GPC. The surface properties were analyzed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and contact angle meter. From the results of the surface analysis it was concluded that the fluorine groups were localized on the surface rather than the inside of the polyurethane films.

  • Polyurethane/modified boron nitride (PU/m-BN) composite was synthesized from the poly(tetra methylene glycol) (PTMG), 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI), and modified boron nitride (m-BN). The modification of boron nitride and synthesis of PU/m-BN composite were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic analyses. The mechanical properties of the PU/m-BN composites were measured using the universal testing machine (UTM) and the thermal properties of the composites were investigated ser flash analysis (LFA) and UL94 measurements. As a result, the thermal conductivity of the polyurethane composite increased to 1.19 W/m·K, and the flame retardancy of the easy to burn polyurethane, which was not self-extinguishing was improved to UL94 V-1 grade.

  • Isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), polytetramethylene glycol 1000 (PTMG1000), and N-methyl diethanol amine (MDEA) were applied to prepare cationic polyurethane water dispersions (PUD). Various neutralizers and chain extenders were introduced in order to investigate property changes, such as particle size, viscosity, $T_g$, tensile strength, and water swellability, depending on chemical structure of those chemicals. While the PUDs neutralized by acetic acid showed a typical elastomeric behavior, the others used with hydrochloride presented crystalline behavior. Among chain extenders isophorone diamine (IPDA) provided the best mechanical property. The particle size of the PUD neutralized with HCl was smaller than that with acetic acid. It is believed that this is attributed to the size difference of counter ions. The PUD chain-extended with hydrazine had the smallest particle size.
