Effects of Additives on the Friction and Wear Properties of PTFE Composites (PTFE 복합재료의 마찰 . 마모 특성에 미치는 첨가제의 영향)

  • Recently, PTFE-polyimide composites are being used self-lubricating parts for industrial field. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polyimide composites. The friction and wear test was carried out for the different composition ratio under the atmosphere room temperature and constant load of 7.69N and their friction and wear properties were compared with each other at various sliding speed. Notable results are summarized as follows. PTFE 100% showed that friction coefficient was almost same values at 0.94 and 1.88m/s but the value was decreased at 2.83m/s because the friction temperature is higher than low speed. PTFE 80%-PI 20% showed the lowest mean friction coefficient at 2.83m/s. PTFE 20%-PI 80% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94m/s and the value was decreased at high speed but the value is higher than other materials except PTFE 100 %. PI 100% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94 and 1.88m/s because adhesive wear mainly occurred that speed. PTFE 100% showed highest specific wear rate on the whole. Specific wear rate of PTFE 80%-PI 20% was almost the same value with PTFE 20%-PI 80%. PI 100% showed the lowest value at high sliding speed because the friction surface was thicken and carbonated by high friction temperature.

  • PTFE(Polytetrafluoroethylene)은 매우 낮은 마찰계수를 나타내고, -260부터 +260$\circ$C의 온도에서 계속적으로 사용할 수 있는 유용한 기계적 성질들을 유지한다. 결정 용융점은 327$\circ$C로서, 대부분의 다른 준결정(semicrystalline) 복합 재료들 보다 훨씬 높다. 더욱이, PTFE는 응력 상태에서 냉간 유동성을 보이며, 준결정 고분자들 중에서 가장 높은 마모율을 보인다. 하지만, 이러한 단점들은 PTFE내에 충전재(filler)를 첨가함으로써 매우 향상될 수 있다. PTFE의 독특한 특성의 하나는 충전재가 함유될 때의 내마모성의 증가가 다른 준결정 고분자보다 대단히 큰 것이다. 위에서 언급된 특성으로 인하여, PTFE는 마찰에 응용되는 고분자계 복합 재료들 중에서 매우 중요한 메트릭스 고분자이다. PTFE의 독특한 트라이볼로지적 성질들은 고유의 분자적 그리고 형태적 구조에 기인한다.

  • Light reflectance and arc resistance of PTFE composites were investigated. PTFE composites have been used widely as a material for circuit breaker nozzle. Arc energy is transported to the nozzle material by radiation. It is needed to add some fillers to PTFE to avoid energy penetration into the nozzle material. In this paper, some fillers that have endurance in the high temperature arc environment were added into PTFE. The light reflectance and arc resistance of PTFE composites according to the kinds and content of fillers were investigated.

  • This study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polyimide composites. At the PTFE and polyimide alone mixture specimens, PTFE80%-polyimide20%, which shows the lowest men friction coefficient and specific wear rate at 0.94m/s sliding speed. At each of carbon, copper and oxide lopper mixed with PTFE80%-polyimide20%. In case of copper10%, at 0.94m/s sliding speed, the mean friction coefficient shows 0.087, which is the lowest value in all specimens. In case of the specific wear rate, copper30% specimen shows the lowest value of $2.537E-5(mm^3/Nm)$ in all specimens.

  • The mechanical properties of PTFE 100%, PTFT 90% + carbon black 10%, PTFE 85% + glass fiber 15%, PTFE 80% + glass fiber 15% + molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) 5%, PTFE 75% + glass fiber 25%, and PTFE 75% + carbon black 18% + graphite 7% composites were investigated in this study. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to examine the heat of fusion(${\Delta}H_f$) and thermal stability of the composites. Also, the wear surface and wear volume of PTFE lip seal were examined using the durability test. Wear surface was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the hardness, wear resistance and durability were enhanced by adding glass fiber and molybdenum disulfide into pure PTFE, but tensile strength and elongation were decreased. According to the experimental results, the composite (PTFE + 15% glass fiber + 5% molybdenum disulfide) showed the best properties for applying to oil-seal among six types of PTFE composites.

In case of the specific wear rate, copper30% specimen shows the lowest value of 2.537-5(mm3/Nm) in all specimens. It considered that the friction coefficient is affected by generating speed and quantity of wear film. In case specific wear rate, it is attributed to the fact that the surface hardness of wear film is proportioned to specific wear rate.

Fabrication of PTFE/Al Composite Materials by Hot Press Process (가압소결에 의한 PTFE/AI 복합재료 제조)

  • To investigate the fabrication possibility of a polymer particle dispersed metal matrix composite, polytetrafluorothylene (PTFE) particles were incorporated into the Al by the powder metallurgy process. The characteristics of a PTFE/Al composite were evaluated by measuring the density and hardness, and analysis of XRD, FT-Raman and microstructure. And wear properties of these composites were evaluated under the dry wear condition. It was possible to obtain the PTFE particles stably dispersed Al matrix composites by the hot press process at the sintering temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The wear coefficient of a PTFE/Al compoite decreased with increasing of the volume fraction of PTFE. The wear weight of a PTFE/Al composite increased with increasing of the volume fractionof PTFE in the range of 0~10 vol.%PTFE, and showed maximum value at 10 vol.%PTFE, and then decreased at 20vol.%PTFE.

  • 여러 가지 기능성 섬유나 섬유복합재료에서는 가공성이나 계면접착성 향상 및 응용성을 높이기 위하여 섬유 표면을 개질하여 사용하는 경우가 많다. 지금까지 연구된 섬유의 표면개질 방법으로는 화학적 처리방법, 광화학적 방법, 플라즈마 처리법 등이 개발되어 있다. 화학적 방법은 장비가 간단한 장점이 있지만 사용 약품이 대부분 강한 독성을 지니고 있어서 작업 및 환경오염에 큰 문제점이 있고, 광화학적 방법은 radiation 에너지가 커야 하고 광에너지의 차폐 문제가 있다. (중략)

  • Fluoroplastics have been used widely for chemical or electrical facility materials and lubricable engineering structural materials because they have the superior characteristics such as thermal stability, chemical stability, solid lubricity, arc resistance, wearable durability and good sealing property. In this study, PTFE composite materials for the insolation parts of high voltage and current breaker were investigated and estimated.
