Consolidation of Metro Networks and Access Networks by using Long-reach WDM-PON (장거리 전송 파장분할 다중방식 수동형 광가입자망을 이용한 메트로망과 가입자망 통합 방안)

  • We demonstrate bidirectional long-reach 35-channel dense wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network(DWDM-PON) based on wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (F-P LDs). The mode control of F-P LD enhances output power at decreased the required injection power. We show packet-loss-free transmission in all 70 channels at 125 Mb/s per channel line rate through 70 km of single mode fiber without optical amplifier The DWDM-PON can consolidate a metro network into an access network by bypassing the central offices within its reach. The proposed DWDM-PON can accommodate about 80 subscribers with an EDFA-based broadband light source. Further expansion up to 100 subscribers is possible with a semiconductor-based BLS.

  • This paper reports on the simulation study of gigabit-capable Passive Optical networks (GPON) using WDM focused on single light source per each channel, and proposes using 1550nm VCSEL for light sources. Proposed system uses high speed direct-modulated light sources, in which the merit is able to maintain a low loss. to support broad bandwidth, and to lower network configuration cost. We conformed simulation study on the transmission of the downstream 2.5Gbit/s, upstream 1.25Gbit/s, 622Mbit/s which was recommended by ITU-T G.984.1. We measured the transmission margin and examined the feasibility of proposed system.

  • 향후 10년 내에 전 세계적으로 인터넷 인구가 50억 명에 이르고 사물지능통신의 발달로 인해 인터넷에 접속되는 기기가 1,000억 대로 급증할 것으로 전망된다. 또한, video 콘텐츠를 비롯한 초대용량 서비스, 무선 인터넷 서비스 등이 활성화되고, 트래픽이 폭증할 것으로 예측된다. 그러나 60년대 후반에 만들어진 인터넷은 이러한 새로운 서비스의 등장 및 인터넷 트래픽의 폭증에 적절히 대응하기에는 많은 한계를 가지고 있다. 따라서 미국, EU, 일본 등 선진국들은 네트워크의 양적인 확충은 물론, 새로운 인터넷 기술을 개발하고 그 구조를 재설계하기 위해서 경쟁적으로 대대적인 투자를 전개하고 있다. 광가입자망은 이러한 급변하는 가입자망의 변화에 효과적으로 대처할 수 있는 기술로써, 인터넷 서비스 사업자와 가입자를 연결하는 중요한 네트워크이다. 본고에서는 대표적인 광가입자망 기술인 TDM-PON(Time Division Multiplexing-Passive Optical Network) 및 WDM-PON(Wavelength Division Multiplexing-Passive Optical Network)의 전반적인 기술 현황, 국제 표준화 동향 및 시장 동향에 대해 소개하고, 앞으로 미래를 대비하기 위해 필요한 광가입자망의 기술개발 방향에 대해 논하고자 한다.

Request Deduplication Scheme in Cache-Enabled 5G Network Using PON

  • With the advent of the 5G era, the rapid growth in demand for mobile content services has increased the need for additional backhaul investment. To meet this demand, employing a content delivery network (CDN) and optical access solution near the last mile has become essential for the configuration of 5G networks. In this paper, a cache-enabled architecture using the passive optical network (PON) is presented to serve video on demand (VoD) for users. For efficient use of mobile backhaul, I propose a request deduplication scheme (RDS) that can provide all the requested services missed in cache with minimum bandwidth by eliminating duplicate requests for movies within tolerable range of the quality of service (QoS). The performance of the proposed architecture is compared with and without RDS in terms of the number of requests arriving at the origin server (OS), hit ratio, and improvement ratio according to user requests and cache sizes.

  • ATM PON 기반의 FTTH 광 정합 망은 향후 가장 효과적이고 경제적인 망이 될 것이므로 FTTC 망을 비용 경제적인 망으로 구현하기 위해서 광 액세스 시스템(ONU)을 최대한 저가격이고 소형이며 저전력을 소모하는 시스템으로 설계할 필요가 있다. 본 연구의 ONU는 FTTC/FTTH 기반의 155Mb/s(OC-3/STM-1) 및 622Mb/s(OC-12/STM-4) 속도의 ATM-PON 광 정합을 위한 광 액세스 시스템이다. 본 고에서는 유니버설 가입자 정합을 통하여 가입자에게 일반 및 공중전화, N-ISDN, 고속 인터넷 접속, 고속 멀티미디어 서비스 등의 다양한 서비스를 제공하기 위한 비용 효과적이고 소형이며 저전력을 소모하는 ONU 설계 및 구현방안을 기술하였다.

Performance Evaluation of Bidirectional Optical Amplifiers for Amplified Passive Optical Network Based on Broadband Light Source Seeded Optical Sources

  • We have evaluated the performances of bidirectional optical amplifiers which were suited for the cost-effective implementation of amplified bidirectional passive optical networks (PONs). First, we measured the maximum gains of two simple bidirectional optical amplifiers implemented without using any optical components for the suppression of reflected signals. From the results, the maximum gains of two simple bidirectional amplifiers with a broadband light source (BLS) seeded optical source were limited to be 27 dB due to the reflection-induced in-band crosstalk, when the reflectance coefficients were measured to be -33 dB in both directions. Then, we have also implemented a bidirectional optical amplifier with two band splitters for the amplified bidirectional PON where the two different wavelength bands were allocated to the downstream and upstream signals transmission. In our measurement, we confirmed that the maximum gain of bidirectional optical amplifier with two band splitters could be increased to more than 30 dB owing to the efficient suppression of in-band crosstalk.

Efficient Power-Saving 10-Gb/s ONU Using Uplink Usage-Dependent Sleep Mode Control Algorithm in WDM-PON

  • We propose and demonstrate an efficient power-saving optical network unit (ONU) based on upstream traffic monitoring for 10-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs). The power-saving mode controller uses a ${\mu}$-processor and traffic monitoring modules followed by the proposed power-saving processes to operate the sleep mode ONU. The power consumption of the ONU is effectively reduced from 19.3 W to 6.4 W when no traffic from the users is detected. In addition, we design a power-saving mechanism based on a cyclic sleep mode operation to allow a connectivity check between the optical line terminal and ONU. Our calculation results show that the WDM-PON ONU reduces the power consumption by around 60% using the proposed mechanism.

  • We demonstrate a time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network system employing a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array-based optical line terminal transceiver and a tunable bidirectional optical subassembly-based optical network terminal transceiver. A packet error-free operation is achieved after a 40 km single-mode fiber bidirectional transmission. We also discuss an arrayed waveguide grating, a photo detector array based on complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor photonics technologies, and low-cost key devices for deployment in access networks.

Hierarchical Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm for Multimedia Services over Ethernet PONs

  • In this paper, we propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm for multimedia services over Ethernet PONs (passive optical networks). The proposed algorithm is composed of a low-level scheduler in the optical network unit (ONU) and a high-level scheduler in the optical line terminal (OLT). The hierarchical DBA algorithm can provide expansibility and efficient resource allocation in an Ethernet PON system in which the packet scheduler is separated from the queues. In the proposed DBA algorithm, the OLT allocates bandwidth to the ONUs in proportion to the weight associated with their class and queue length, while the ONU preferentially allocates its bandwidth to queues with a static priority order. The proposed algorithm provides an efficient resource utilization by reducing the unused remaining bandwidth caused by the variable length of the packets. We also define the service classes and present control message formats conforming to the multi-point control protocol (MPCP) over an Ethernet PON. In order to evaluate the performance, we designed an Ethernet PON system on the basis of IEEE 802.3ah "Ethernet in the first mile" (EFM) using OPNET and carried out simulations. The results are analyzed in terms of the channel utilization, queuing delay, and ratio of the unused remaining bandwidth.

  • Enhanced radio access technologies (RAT) are deployed in Next Generation Convergence Networks by the service providers so as to satisfy the basic requirements of end-users for e.g. QoS. Whenever the available resources are being shared simultaneously and dynamically by multiple users or distribution of allocated channels randomly, the deficiency of spectral resources and dynamic behavior of Network traffic in real time Networking, we may have problem. In order to evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm, computer simulation has been performed on NS-2 simulator and a comparison with the existing algorithms has been made.
