Objective : The purpose of this study was conducted to find the change of shoulder flexion by degree of freedom between the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) pattern, the flexion- abduction- external rotation, and not PNF pattern, the flexion- exteral rotation(except abduction)movement. Method : PNF pattern applied on the unilateral upper extremity in all subjects were the flexion- abduction- external rotation, and not PNF pattern, and twenty-six normal subjects(13 male, 13 female) were tested by Cybex Norm Testing & Rehabilitation System. Results : PNF pattern showed significant increase of flexion than not PNF pattern, the flexion-exteral rotation(except abduction)movement, and also the female group was significantly increased than male group. Conclusion : The results suggested that the application of PNF pattern to the unilateral upper extremity had affected on the shoulder flexion by degree of freedom.
Purpose: This study compared and analyzed the effect of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) arm extension pattern and leg flexion pattern on the contralateral lower extremity muscles when the patterns were applied to the same subject. Methods: In the study, 35 healthy men and women who understood the PNF patterns were selected as participants. The participants completed the PNF arm extension-abduction-internal rotation pattern and leg flexion-adduction-external rotation with knee flexion pattern in the supine position. While the patients' completed each pattern, the contralateral leg muscle activity was measured to examine the irradiation effect. The maximum isometric contraction time of the muscles to be measured was kept for 5 seconds, and the mean value was obtained by repeating the pattern three times. Results: When the leg flexion-adduction-external rotation with knee flexion pattern was completed, the muscle activity in the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius of the contralateral lower extremity was significantly greater than that found in the PNF arm extension-abduction-internal rotation pattern. Conclusion: The PNF leg flexion pattern showed greater muscle activity on the contralateral lower extremity than the arm extension pattern. Thus, the PNF leg extension pattern is more effective in the activation of the muscles associated with weight-bearing activity.
Objectives: The main purpose of this study is to analyze the importance of the rotatory factor in PNF pattern. In this article has to analyze and clarify the importance of the rotatory factor in PNF pattern by comparing the general concepts, facilitation technics, and neuroscience of muscle spindle, etc. Methods: This is a literature study with books. Results : There is close relationships between the pattern in PNF and rotatory factor. PNF pattern is priorily made up the diagonal and spiral pattern. the rotatory factor influences and guides from the start to end in the pattern. Conclusions : Rotation component is most important of the three component that one flexion or extension, abduction or adduction and rotation. It is that provide longer muscle length and stimulate the muscle spindles.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare the elector spine muscle tone using the irradiation of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) arm pattern according to angular motion. Methods: Thirty subjects participated in this study. Elector spine muscle tone was measured using a Myotonpro device while in the sitting position according to the angular motion (70°, 100°, 130°) of the PNF arm pattern using a D1 flexion pattern. Each angular motion of the PNF arm pattern was performed with a continuous passive motion (CPM). The change in elector spine muscle tone was statistically evaluated using a repeated one-way ANOVA test. Post-hoc analysis was performed using the Bonferroni method. Results: The results revealed a significant change in elector spine muscle tone when performing the PNF arm pattern using D1 flexion pattern. Specifically, the elector spine muscle tone had significantly increased at 100° and 130° motion in the PNF arm pattern when compared to the initial muscle tone (p < 0.05). No significant muscle tone changes were noted for any of the angular motions of the PNF upper arm pattern (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate a positive increase in elector spine muscle tone with irradiation of the PNF upper arm pattern exercise with 100° or 130° angular motion. The minimum angle at which the effect of the irradiation of the PNF arm pattern could be seen was 100°.
Purpose: This study evaluated the relationship between pelvic pressure and irradiation of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) upper arm pattern exercises with an elastic band while in a sitting position. Methods: Fourteen subjects with asymptomatic pelvic pressure participated in this study. Pelvic pressure was measured using a Gaitview® system while sitting and performing PNF bilateral upper arm patterns. Resistance strength was provided by the blue elastic band. The statistical significance of the results was evaluated using a repeated one-way ANOVA and the independent t-test. The Bonferroni method was used for the post-hoc test. Results: The results revealed a significant change in the pelvic pressure when performing the PNF arm pattern. The average resistance pressure on the pelvis, with the elastic band, significantly increased after the initial sitting position (F=3.91, 3.92; p<0.05). No significant pelvic pressure changes were noted for each PNF upper arm pattern (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed a positive relationship between pelvic pressure and the irradiation of PNF upper arm pattern exercises with resistance in the sitting position.

PURPOSE: Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) has been shown to improve body function and activity/participation in people with functional dysfunctions. This study evaluates if active exercise using theraband in PNF pattern may induce similar benefits as exercise using manual PNF pattern performed by physiotherapists on promoting mobility, balance and fear of fall in community-dwelling elderly. METHODS: Twenty-three community-dwelling elderly with independent activities of daily living were recruited and randomly allocated into either PNF group - exercise in PNF pattern by trained physiotherapists or Theraband-PNF (T-PNF) group - exercise using theraband in PNF pattern, for an hour, twice weekly for 4 weeks. Functional outcomes such as Timed Up and Go test, Elderly Mobility Scale, Berg balance scale, functional reach and subjective measures including fear of fall (FOF) scale, bodily pain in visual analogue scale were measured pre and post-program. RESULTS: Twenty-one participants completed the program. PNF group demonstrated significant within-group improvements in all subjective measures and objective measures. Similar within-group improvements were demonstrated in all outcome measures except FOFS in T-PNF group. However, no between-group differences were found in any of the outcome measures. CONCLUSION: Comparable improvements in functional outcomes in community dwelling elderly were demonstrated in both groups. As manual PNF exercise traditionally need clinicians' contact and feedback on patient which limit the training to be carried out extensively in community setting. The current findings suggest that exercise using theraband in PNF pattern is feasible to be adopted as self-practice exercise for community-dwelling elderly to induce beneficial effects on functional outcomes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) lower extremity pattern on the dominant leg on muscle activity of the lower extremity supported by the ground. Methods: The subjects were 20 healthy males living in Busan. All subjects performed four direction PNF lower extremity patterns, and data were collected by surface electromyography from the gluteus medius (GM), tensor fascia latae (TFL), vastus medialis oblique (VMO), vastus lateralis oblique (VLO), and semitendinosus (STD) muscles of the opposite lower extremity during PNF lower extremity pattern. The PNF lower extremity pattern applied to the dominant leg was (1) flexion/adduction/external rotation with knee flexion; (2) extension/abduction/internal rotation with knee extension; (3) flexion/abduction/internal rotation with knee flexion; and (4) extension/adduction/external rotation with knee extension pattern, repeated 3 times per pattern and using the average value of the collected results. Collected muscle activity values were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc Tukey testing was performed to check between-group differences. The statistical significance level was set at α = 0.05. Results: GM and TFL flexion/abduction/internal rotation pattern with knee flexion was significantly higher than other patterns. VMO and VLO extension/adduction/external rotation pattern with knee extension was significantly higher than other patterns. STD flexion/adduction/external rotation pattern with knee flexion was significantly higher than other patterns. Conclusion: The study confirms differences in lower extremity muscle activity for the PNF lower extremity pattern, indicating that selective muscle contraction induction is possible using a pattern appropriate to the purpose of treatment.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the most effective way to facilitate the abductor hallucis muscle during PNF leg pattern-emphasized hallux abduction. Methods: The study recruited 18 healthy adults. All participants agreed voluntarily to take part in the study following an explanations of its purpose and procedures. They randomly performed the PNF leg pattern-emphasized hallux abduction variations in a hook-lying or sitting position. Activation of the abductor hallucis (AbH), adductor hallucis (AdH), extensor hallucis longus (EHL), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles, and the ratio of AbH/AdH, were measured during PNF exercises using electromyography. One-way repeated ANOVA was used to compare the activation of foot intrinsic and extrinsic muscles during the four PNF exercises. Results: PNF leg pattern-emphasized hallux abduction using normal timing was significantly higher in TA compared to PNF leg pattern-emphasized hallux abduction using timing for emphasis, regardless of the starting position. The PNF leg pattern-emphasized hallux abduction using timing for emphasis in the hook-lying position was significantly higher in AbH than in other exercises. Although there was no statistically significant difference in the ratio of AbH/AdH, it was higher in the hook-lying position. Conclusion: PNF leg pattern-emphasized hallux abduction using timing for emphasis in the hook-lying position can be recommended as a method to optimize the activation of AbH and the ratio of AbH/AdH.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to define the change of lumbar asymmetry multifidus muscles when upper extremity PNF pattern. Methods : For this research, twenty-nine asymptomatic participants were voluntary attended. Under the identical conditions, Multifidus muscles were measured standing position and on L4,L5 vertebral level by MyLabOne (ESAOTE, Netherland with a 3.5MHz covex array transducer). The upper extrimity PNF pattern used to activate the multifidus ipsilateral and cotralateral. Results : Results of analysis showed that at the L4, L5 vertebral level, healthy asymtomativ subjects had asymmetry multifidus muscles size. The depth of the multifidus muscles were significantly increased at contralateral upper extrimity PNF pattern, but no significant differences were comparison ipsilateral with contralateral. Conclusion : The multifidus muscle in asymptomatic subjects clinical significance asymmetry. Contralateral upper extrimity PNF pattern seems to be the most suitable exercise for strenthen the smaller size of the multifidus. This study will be used as a prevention method of LBP.
Purpose: This study investigates the influence of applying proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) leg patterns on the activation of three types of mesogluteal fibers at the opposite side. Methods: The target subjects of this study were 19 healthy men who voluntarily agreed to participate in the program. For all subjects, the following four PNF leg patterns were applied while they were in a standing position, and then, the activation of the gluteus medius at the opposite side was measured: (1) flexion abduction internal rotation pattern, (2) flexion adduction external rotation pattern, (3) extension abduction internal rotation pattern, and (4) extension adduction external rotation pattern. In each position, a pattern was executed three times in 5 s, and the average of each measurement was used for the statistics. Results: Among the PNF leg patterns, the activation of the mesogluteal fibers at the opposite side was most significant under the application of the extension abduction internal rotation pattern. The activation of the back muscular fiber was significantly high under the application of the flexion abduction internal rotation pattern. Conclusion: Selective application of PNF leg patterns can improve the functional activity of each mesogluteal fiber.
