Fast Motion Estimation Algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264 Transcoder

  • In this paper, we propose a fast ME (motion estimation) algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264 Transcoder. Whereas 2 modes ($8{\times}8$, $16{\times}16$) are used for ME in MPEG-4 simple profile, ME using 7 modes is supported for further enhanced coding efficiency in H.264. The transcoding speed is affected dominantly by the computational complexity of encoder part in transcoder, where ME module of H.264 encoder has high complexity due to using 7 modes. In order to increase the speed of transcoding between MPEG-4 and H.264, we use 3 PMVs (predicted motion vectors) and the mode information of MBs (macroblocks) provided from the decoder part of transcoder. Since the proposed 3 PMVs are very close to an optimal motion vector, and we consider only some restricted modes according to the MB information transferred from decoder part, the proposed scheme can speed up the transcoding procedure without loss of image quality. We show experimental results which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, where performance of our scheme is compared with that of the conventional fast algorithm for H.264.

  • 3D reconstruction of urban architecture, land, and roads is an important part of building a "digital city." Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are gradually replacing other platforms, such as satellites and aircraft, in geographical image collection; the reason for this is not only lower cost and higher efficiency, but also higher data accuracy and a larger amount of obtained information. Recent 3D reconstruction algorithms have a high degree of automation, but their computation time is long and the reconstruction models may have many voids. This paper decomposes the object into multiple regional parallel reconstructions using the clustering principle, to reduce the computation time and improve the model quality. It is proposed to detect the planar area under low resolution, and then reduce the number of point clouds in the complex area.

  • In this paper, thermal comfort and ventilation performance characteristics in the lecture room with the ventilation system and two different air-conditioning systems, system air-conditioner or fan coil unit, were evaluated by experimental and numerical methods. We compared the measured data with the computational results of the predicted mean vote and carbon dioxide concentration. Additionally the ventilation effectiveness was calculated numerically. From a viewpoint of the uniformity of PMVs in the lecture room, the thermal distribution performance of the system air-conditioner was more effective than the fan coil unit. Carbon dioxide concentration and ventilation effectiveness were barely affected by the type of the air-conditioning system.

A Survey on Riding Characteristics and Helmet Wearing Conditions of Bicycle and PMV(Personal Mobility Vehicle) Riders (자전거 및 PMV(Personal Mobility Vehicle) 사용자의 주행 특성 및 헬멧 착용 실태 조사)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in riding characteristics and helmet wearing conditions between bicycle and PMV riders so that the basis data necessary for the development of suitable helmets for each group is provided. For this purpose, riding characteristics and helmet wearing conditions of bicycle and PMV users were investigated using online survey method and then the survey results were interpreted by in-depth interview conducted for bicycle and PMV users. The online survey results showed that the PMV group showed shorter driving distance and more driving frequency than bicycle group. This short driving distance was due to the limitation of battery capacity of PMVs. Helmet wearing rate was significantly lower in PMV group than in bicycle group, which was associated with relatively low chances to drive long distance on the motorway. In the PMV group, the 'urban helmets' were mainly used, in which the appearance of helmet was priorized, but in the bicycle group, the 'road cycle helmets' were mainly used, in which the light weight or ventilation were priorized. Urban helmets caused stronger pain and more fitting problems than road cycle helmets because the head shapes of Koreans were not properly applied to the helmet design. Since the fitting problem and pain intensity were the important causes that making PMV users not wear the helmets, it is necessary to develop the urban helmets reflecting the head shapes of Koreans in order to increase the helmet wearing rate of the PMV users.
