In this paper, a thermo-piezoelectric mechanism with integrated heaters and piezoelectric sensors has been studied for low power probe-based data storage. Silicon nitride cantilever integrated with silicon heater and piezoelectric sensor has been developed to improve the uniformity of cantilevers. Data bits of 40 nm in diameter were recorded on PMMA film. The sensitivity of the piezoelectric sensor was 0.615 fC/nm after poling the PZT layer. And, the $34\times34$ probe array integrated with CMOS circuits has been successfully developed by simple one-step bonding process. The process can simplify the process step and reduce tip wear using silicon nitride tip.

Graphene, two dimensional single layer of carbon atoms, has tremendous attention due to its superior property such as high electron mobility, high thermal conductivity and optical transparency. Especially, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene has been used as a promising material for high quality and large-scale graphene film. Unfortunately, although CVD-grown graphene has strong advantages, application of the CVD-grown graphene is limited due to ineffective transfer process that delivers the graphene onto a desired substrate by using polymer support layer such as PMMA(polymethyl methacrylate). The transferred CVD-grown graphene has serious drawback due to remaining polymeric residues generated during transfer process, which induces the poor physical and electrical characteristics by a p-doping effect and impurity scattering. To solve such issue incurred during polymer transfer process of CVD-grown graphene, various approaches including thermal annealing, chemical cleaning, mechanical cleaning have been tried but were not successful in getting rid of polymeric residues. On the other hand, lithographical patterning of graphene is an essential step in any form of microelectronic processing and most of conventional lithographic techniques employ photoresist for the definition of graphene patterns on substrates. But, application of photoresist is undesirable because of the presence of residual polymers that contaminate the graphene surface consistent with the effects generated during transfer process. Therefore, in order to fully utilize the excellent properties of CVD-grown graphene, new approach of transfer and patterning techniques which can avoid polymeric residue problem needs to be developed. In this work, we carried out transfer and patterning process simultaneously with no polymeric residue by using a metal etch mask. The patterned thin gold layer was deposited on CVD-grown graphene instead of photoresists in order to make much cleaner and smoother surface and then transferred onto a desired substrate with PMMA, which does not directly contact with graphene surface. We compare the surface properties and patterning morphology of graphene by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. Comparison with the effect of residual polymer and metal on performance of graphene FET will be discussed.

Fabrication of monolayer is important method for enhancing physical and chemical characteristics such as light shielding and antireflection while maintaining thin film properties. In previous studies, monolayers were fabricated by various methods on small substrates, but processes were complicated and difficult to form monolayers with large area. We used rod coating equipment with a small amount of coating liquid to form a HCP (hexagonal closed packing) coating of PMMA beads on PET(poly(ethylene terephthalate)) substrate with $20cm{\times}20cm$ size. We observed that changes in morphologies of monolayers by using the solvents with different boiling points and vapor pressures, by adapting surfactants on particles and by applying plasma treatment on substrates. The coverage was increased by 20% by optimizing the coating conditions including meniscus of beads, control of the attraction - repulsion forces and surface energy. This result can potentially be applied to optical films and sensors because it is possible to make a uniform and large-scale monolayer in a simple and rapid manner when it is compared to the methods in previous studies.

In this research, we studied the development of a SUS304 microneedle array based on microfabrication technology and the applicability of Parylene-C thin film, a medical polymer material. First of all, four materials commonly used in the field of medical engineering (SUS304, Ti, PMMA, and PEEK) were selected and a 5 ㎛ Parylene-C thin film was deposited. The applicability of Parylene-C coating to each material was confirmed through SEM analysis, contact angle measurement, surface roughness(Ra) measurement, and adhesion test according to ASTM standards for each specimen. Parylene-C thin film was deposited based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and a 5 ㎛ Parylene-C deposition process was established through trial and error. Through characteristic experiments to confirm the applicability of Parylene-C, SUS304 material, which is the easiest to apply Parylene-C coating without pretreatment was selected to develop a microneedle array based on CNC micromachining technology. The CNC micromachining process was divided into a total of 5 steps, and a microneedle array consisting of 19 needles with an inner diameter of 200 ㎛, an outer diameter of 400 ㎛, and a height of 1.4 mm was designed and manufactured. Finally, a 5 ㎛ Parylene-C coated microneedle array was developed, which presented future research directions in the field of microneedle-based drug delivery systems.

Objectives : In spinal metastasis and myeloma, percutaneous vertebroplasty could be an effective treatment method to provide spinal stabilization and to relief pain for early rehabilitation. The authors report twenty-five cases the clinical results of percutaneous vertebroplasty for twenty-five cases of spinal metastasis and myeloma. Materials and Methods : From September 1998 to December 1999, seventy percutaneous vertebroplasties(PVP) were performed for spinal metastases and myeloma in 25 patients, sixteen women and nine men ranging in age from 34 to 74. The primary malignancies were 6 multiple myelomas, and in metastatic tumore from various origin. All patients complained of severe pain and had osteolytic vertebral body destructions without spinal cord compression. To evaluate clinical improvement, suObjective verbal analogue pain score(VAS) and Karnofsky performance scale(KPS) were used. Thin sliced(2mm-thickness) sectional computed tomography(CT) was performed before and after PVP. Plain X-ray film was followed up every 1 month to assess the vertebral column stability. Results : In 25 patients, a total of seventy PVPS were performed successfully : 6 cervical, 33 thoracic and 31 lumbar vertebrae. Most patients had clear improvement of pain after PVP ; mean as score was 8.1 and 2.9 before and after PVP, respectively. Improvement was maintained in most patients. No further collapse of treated vertebrae was observed(mean follow-up, 7 months). Leakage of PMMA was notod in the spinal canal(13 levels), neural foramen (2 levels), adjacent disk(15 levels), paravertebral soft tissue(14 levels) and vein(8 levels). Pulmonary embolism was detected in three patients after the procedure, but was not associated with clinical symptoms. Conclusion : These results indicate that percutaneous vertebroplasty can be valuable treatment method in osteolytic spinal metastasis and myeloma, providing immediate pain relief and spinal stabilization and contributing to early rehabilitation.
Two novel phosphorescent heteroleptic cationic Ir(III) complexes, Ir(bt)2(dmpe) (Ir1) and Ir (bt)2(dppe) (Ir2), where bt is 2-phenylbenzothiazole, dmpe is 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane, and dppe is 1,2-bis(diphenyl-phosphino) ethane, were designed and synthesized. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties and the X-ray structure of the Ir1 complex were investigated. The prepared Ir(III) complexes exhibited blue-green emissions at 503-538 nm with vibronic fine structures in dichloromethane solution and PMMA film, implying that the lowest excited states are dominated by ligand-based $^3{\pi}-{\pi}^*$ transitions. The ${\pi}$-acceptor ability of the diphosphine ancillary ligand leads to blue-shift emission. The room temperature photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQYs) of Ir1 and Ir2 were 52% and 45%, respectively, in dichloromethane solution. These high PLQYs resulted from steric hindrances by the bulky cationic iridium complexes. The crystal structure of Ir1 was determined by X-ray crystallography, which revealed that central iridium adopted a distorted octahedral structure coordinated with two bt ligands (N^C) and one dmpe ligand (P^P) showing cis C-C and trans N-N dispositions. The bent nature of the dmpe ligand resulted in a relatively wide bite angle of $83.83^{\circ}$ of P-Ir-P.
Friction and adhesion tests were conducted to investigate tribological characteristics of materials for MEMS/NEMS using atomic force microscope (AFM). AFM Si tips were chemically modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) derived from trichlorosilane like octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyl) trichlorosilane (FOTS), and various materials, such as Si, Al, Au, Cu, Ti and PMMA films, were prepared for the tests. SAMs were coated on Si wafer by dipping method prior to AFM tip to determine a proper dipping time. The proper dipping time was determined from the measurements of contact angle, surface energy and thickness of the SAMs. AFM tips were then coated with SAMs by using the same coating condition. Friction and adhesion forces between the AFM Si tip modified with SAM and MEMS/NEMS materials were measured. These forces were compared to those when AFM tip was uncoated. According to the results, after coating OTS and FOTS, the friction and adhesion forces on all materials used in the tests decreased; however, the effect of SAM on the reduction of friction and adhesion forces could be changed according to counterpart materials. OTS was the most effective to reduce the friction and adhesion forces when counterpart material was Cu film. In case of FOTS, friction and adhesion forces decreased the most effectively on Au films.
Nowadays, TFT-LCD is widely used as display unit of many digital devices. And, the backlight unit(BLU) is used as a light source of TFT-LCD module. In the backlight unit, the most important component is a light guide, which guides the input light to the TFT-LCD module uniformly. Recently, many researchers have focused on improving the efficiency of BLU by changing the design and structure of a light guide. In the present paper, a series of simulation was performed to find the optimal luminance distribution of emanated light from the given geometry as the first step. From the results of simulations for the light guide with given V-groove pattern, the emanated light from it is mostly affected by the groove angle. In the case of acute angle, about 74 degrees was found as optimal angle to satisfy the restrictions of angular luminance distribution, FWHM, the maximum luminance, etc. However, as far as the average luminance value was concerned, the case of 120 degrees(abtuse angle) was found to be the best while prism films were added to the BLU. As a next step the light guide samples of 74 and 120 degrees were manufactured by DSF method, which was recently proposed by the authors. Of course, most of design parameters were chosen by the aid of simulation results. Finally, the results of average luminance values were compared between the simulation and DSF molded samples.

Ceramic powder, such as MgO, is added as a binder to prepare the green compacts of molten salts of an electrolyte for a thermal battery. Despite the addition of a binder, when the thickness of the electrolyte decreases to improve the battery performance, the problem with the unintentional short circuit between the anode and cathode still remains. To improve the current powder molding method, a new type of electrolyte separator with porous MgO preforms is prepared and characteristics of the thermal battery are evaluated. A Spherical PMMA polymer powder is added as a pore-forming agent in the MgO powder, and an organic binder is used to prepare slurry appropriate for tape casting. A porous MgO preform with $300{\mu}m$ thickness is prepared through a binder burnout and sintering process. The particle size of the starting MgO powder has an effect, not on the porosity of the porous MgO preform, but on the battery characteristics. The porosity of the porous MgO preforms is controlled from 60 to 75% using a pore-forming agent. The batteries prepared using various porosities of preforms show a performance equal to or higher than that of the pellet-shaped battery prepared by the conventional powder molding method.

UV-thermal dually curable coating materials were prepared by the sol-gel method. Nano-sized colloidal boehmite was treated with various organo silane coupling agents. These materials could be well dispersed in various alcohols and relatively polar organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile. The coating films were prepared by a spin coating method on various substrates, which were characterized by FT-IR, Si/Al CP MAS NMR spectra, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FE-SEM, Taber abraser, haze meter, and pencil hardness tester. The effects of molar ratio and types of silane coupling agents, curing method and ion-shower treatment were investigated. Dually curable coating method offered an optimally good quality film in both hardness and transmittance. The transparency and the hardness of the prepared films were increased with amounts of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate, and (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane, respectively. The adhesion between coated layer and substrate could be enhanced by ion-shower treatment.
