  • Korean shipbuilders are starting to use three dimensional solid CAD systems to enhance their competitiveness in design and production. Despite many merits, three dimensional CAD systems reveal some problems in pipe-line modeling. Pipe-line modeling is heavily dependent on point data in routing. However, since the models built by sweeping or skinning operations do not have data about points and lines on the surfaces, the point data for routing are currently manually calculated by considering the diameters of the pipes and alignment conditions with other pipes. This process is inefficient and prone to errors. In order to enhance the pipe modeling, this paper presents an Offset Routing Program for a three dimensional CAD system, which aids designers to easily define the start points and to generate the pipe routings using reference objects.

  • In this paper, the four-pole elliptic function microstrip filter at 2.4GHz band with fractional bandwidth of 4% is realized using compact miniaturized hairpin resonators. The parallel algorithm FDTD method is used to analyze S-parameter of hairpin resonator filter more accurately, and to calculate the electric coupling and magnetic coupling among the hairpin resonators. Absorbing boundary conditions for mesh termination used Sulivan's simplified PML and the FDTD code was paralleled by MPI for IBM SP2 which had enhanced calculation speed. The experimental measurements are performed by HP8720D vector network analyzer. Measured results on fabricated hairpin type cross coupled bandpass filters show good agreements with theoretic results.

  • This study proved if the high resolution satellite imagery of IKONOS is suitable for preparing digital forest cover map. Three methods, the pixel based classification with maximum likelihood (PML), the segment based classification with majority principle(SMP), and the segment based classification with maximum likelihood(SML), were applied to classify and delimitate forest cover of IKONOS imagery taken in May 2000 in a forested area in the central Korea. The segment-based classification was more suitable for classifying and deliminating forest cover in Korea using IKONOS imagery. The digital forest cover map in which each class is delimitated in the form of a polygon can be prepared on the basis of the segment-based classification.

  • Protein dephosphorylation is important for cellular regulation, which is catalyzed by protein phosphatases. Among protein phosphatases, carboxy-terminal domain (CTD) phosphatases are recently emerging and new functional roles of them have been revealed. There are 7 CTD phosphatases in human genome, which are composed of CTD phosphatase 1 (CTDP1), CTD small phosphatase 1 (CTDSP1), CTD small phosphatase 2 (CTDSP2), CTD small phosphatase-like (CTDSPL), CTD small phosphatase-like 2 (CTDSPL2), CTD nuclear envelope phosphatase (CTDNEP1), and ubiquitin-like domain containing CTD phosphatase 1 (UBLCP1). CTDP1 dephosphorylates the second phosphor-serine of CTD of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII), while CTDSP1, STDSP2, and CTDSPL dephosphorylate the fifth phosphor-serine of CTD of RNAPII. In addition, CTDSP1 dephosphorylates new substrates such as mothers against decapentaplegic homologs (SMADs), cell division cycle-associated protein 3 (CDCA3), Twist1, tumor-suppressor protein promyelocytic leukemia (PML), and c-Myc. CTDP1 is related to RNA polymerase II complex recycling, mitosis regulation and cancer cell growth. CTDSP1, CTDSP2 and CTDSPL are related to transcription factor recruitment, tumor suppressor function and stem cell differentiation. CTDNEP1 dephosphorylates LIPIN1 and is related to neural tube formation and nuclear envelope formation. CTDSPL2 is related to hematopoietic stem cell differentiation. UBLCP1 dephosphorylates 26S proteasome and is related to nuclear proteasome regulation. In conclusion, noble roles of CTD phosphatases are emerging through recent researches and this review is intended to summarize emerging roles of CTD phosphatases.

  • Reliability in tunnel analysis is necessary to accomplish technically sound design and economical construction. For this, a thorough understanding of the construction procedure including the ground-support interaction has to be obtained. This paper describes a proper modelling technique to simulate the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) which maintain the supporting capability in post-failure regime. The additional supporting effect of the steel support was also verified by 3-D analyses and a new load distribution factor were proposed. The use of the plastic moment limit (PML) alone can eliminate the occurrence of the awkwardly high tensile stress in the shotcrete and can successfully model the post-peak ductile behavior of the SFRS. But with this method, moment is limited whenever the stress caused by moment reaches tensile strength of the shotcrete irrespective of the stress by axial force. Therefore, it was necessary to find a more comprehensive method which can reflect the influence of the moment and axial force. This can be accomplished by the proper use of "liner element" which is the built-in model in FLAC. In this model, the peak and residual strength as well as the uniaxial compressive strength of the SFRS can be specified. Analyses were conducted with these two models on the 2-lane road tunnels excavated in class IV and V rock mass and results were compared with the conventional elastic beam model. Results showed that both models can reflect the fracture toughness of the SFRS which could not be accomplished by the elastic beam model.

  • In this paper, a coupling scheme for applying finite element analysis(FEA) programs, such as, LS-DYNA and MIDAS/Civil, to a nonlinear soil structure interaction analysis by the boundary reaction method(BRM) is presented. With the FEA programs, the structure and soil media are discretized by linear or nonlinear finite elements. To absorb the outgoing elastic waves to unbounded soil region as much as possible, the PML elements and viscous-spring elements are used at the outer FE boundary, in the LS-DYNA model and in MIDAS/Civil model, respectively. It is also assumed that all the nonlinear elements in the problem are limited to structural region. In this study, the boundary reaction forces for the use in the BRM are calculated using the KIESSI-3D program by solving soil-foundation interaction problem subjected to incident seismic waves. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a linear SSI seismic analysis problem by comparing the BRM solution with the conventional SSI solution. Numerical comparison indicates that the BRM can effectively be applied to a nonlinear soil-structure analysis if motions at the foundation obtained by the BRM for a linear SSI problem excluding the nonlinear structure is conservative.

  • Recent investigation into the integrity of nuclear containment buildings has highlighted the importance of developing an elaborate diagnostic method to evaluate the distribution and size of cavities inside concrete walls. As part of developing such a method, this paper presents a finite element approach to modeling elastic waves propagating in the containment building walls of a nuclear power plant. We introduce a perfectly matched layer (PML) wave-absorbing boundary to limit the large-scale nuclear containment wall to the region of interest. The formulation results in a semi-discrete form with symmetric damping and stiffness matrices. The transient elastic wave equations for a mixed unsplit-field PML were solved for displacement and stresses in the time domain. Numerical results show that the sensitivity of displacement, velocity, acceleration, and stresses is large depending on the size and location of the cavity. The dynamic response of the wall slightly differs depending on the existence of the containment liner plate. The results of this study can be applied to a full-waveform inversion approach for characterizing cavities inside a containment wall.

  • High-frequency electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation phenomena associated with borehole ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys are complex. To improve the understanding of governing physical processes, we present a finite-difference time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations in cylindrical coordinates. This approach allows us to model the full EM wavefield associated with borehole GPR surveys. The algorithm can be easily implemented perfectly matched layers for absorbing boundaries, frequency-dependent media, and finite-length transmitter antenna.

  • We propose a highly birefringent and dispersion compensating photonic crystal fiber based on a double line defect core. Using a finite element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer (PML), it is demonstrated that it is possible to obtain broadband large negative dispersion of about -400 to -427 ps/(nm.km) covering all optical communication bands (from O to U band) and to achieve the dispersion coefficient of -425 ps/(nm.km) at 1.55μm. In addition, the highest birefringence of the proposed PCF at 1.55 μm is 1.92 × 10-2 and the value of birefringence from the wavelength of 1.26 to 1.8 μm (covering O to U bands) is about 1.8 × 10-2 to 1.92 × 10-2. It is confirmed that from the simulation results, the confinement loss of the proposed PCF is always less than 10-3 dB/km at 1.55 μm with seven fiber rings of air holes in the cladding.
