A spectrofluorimetric method for the simultaneous determination of amino acids (tryptophan and tyrosine) based on the application of multivariate calibration method such as principal component regression and partial least squares (PLS) to luminescence measurements has been studied. Emission spectra of synthetic mixtures of two amino acids were obtained at excitation wavelength of 257 ㎚. The calibration model in PCR and PLS was obtained from the spectral data in the range of 280-500 ㎚ for each standard of a calibration set of 32 standards, each containing different amounts of two amino acids. The relative standard error of prediction ($RSEP_a$) was obtained to assess the model goodness in quantifying each analyte in a validation set. The overall relative standard error of prediction ($RSEP_m$) for the mixture obtained from the results of a validation set, formed by 6 independent mixtures was also used to validate the present method.

Rapid or on-line coal analysis is of great interest in coal industry as it would allow efficient plant operation. Multivariate analysis has been applied to near-infrared(NIR) spectra coal for investigating the relationship between coal properties(%) (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur), heating value(kcal/kg) and corresponding near-infrared spectral data. The quantitative analysis was carried out by applying PLS(partial least squares regression) to determine a methodology able to establish a relationship between coal properties and NIR spectral data being applied mathematical pre-treatments for minimizing the physical features of the samples. As a results of the analysis, this technique is able to classify the species of coals and to predict the all coal properties except ash, nitrogen and sulfur. The efficient operation of coal fired power plant is expected owing to real time on-line coal analysis of moisture and heating value.
A spectrophotometric method for the simultaneous determination of anionic and nonionic surfactant based on the application of multivariate calibration method such as principal component regression(PCR) and partial least squares(PLS) has been studied. The calibration models in PCR and PLS were obtained from the spectral data in the range of 400~700 nm for each standard of a calibration set of 26 standards, each containing different amounts of two surfactants. The relative standard error of prediction(RSEP$_{\alpha}$) was obtained to assess the model goodness in quantifying each analyte in a 5 validation samples which containing different amounts of two surfactants.
Purpose: This study derived the planning factors affecting the evacuation route of facilities for the disabled and to identify the planning factors that affect each facility. Method: The PLS(Partial Least Square)Regression analysis was used to solve the problem of multicollinearity and number of samples. Result: As a result of analysis, The most important planning elements for each facility were derived as door: closing time (1.131), corridor: ramp for wheelchairs (1.227), stairs: emergency lighting for stairs (1.117), and evacuation space: evacuation space convenience facilities (1.106). Conclusion: In order to plan an effective evacuation route for the disabled, a universal design should be applied to consider the perception, needs, and satisfaction of the disabled, rather than a comprehensive reflection.
The water content of skin was determined using a FT near infrared (NIR) spectrometer. NIR diffuse reflectance spectra were collected from hairless mouse, in vitro, and from human inner arm, in vivo. It was found that the variation of NIR absorbance band 1450 nm from OH vibration of water and 1940 nm from the combination involving OH stretching and OH deformation, depending on the absolute water content of separated hairless mouse skin, in vitro, using the FT NIR spectrometer. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied to develop a calibration model. The PLS model showed good correlation. For practical use of the evaluation of human skin moisture, the PLS model for human skin moisture was developed in vivo on the basis of the relative water content of stratum corneum from the conventional capacitance method. The PLS model predicted human skin moisture with a standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 3.98 at 1130-1830 nm range. These studies showed the possibility of a rapid and nondestructive skin moisture measurement using FT NIR spectrometer.
Fourier transform-near infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIRS) was evaluated for determination of total dietary fiber (TDF) content of brown rice. Enzymatic-gravimetric method was suitable to obtain reference values for calibration of NIR at 1,000-2,500 nm range. Standard error of laboratory procedure ranged 0.17 to 0.72%. Partial least square (PLS) regression was used to develop the calibration equations. Regression was performed automatically using NIRCal chemometric software. Accuracy of prediction model for TDF content was certified for regression coefficient (r), standard error of estimation (SEE) and standard error of prediction (SEP), showing 0.9780, 0.0636, and 0.0642, respectively. This prediction model can be used for determination of TDF in brown rice and would be useful for real-time analysis in food industry.

The partial least squares (PLS-1) calibration model based on spectrophotometric measurement, for the simultaneous determination of sulfite and sulfide is described. This method is based on the difference between the rate of the reaction of sulfide and sulfite with Malachite Green in pH 7.0 buffer solution and at 25 ${^{\circ}C}$. The absorption kinetic profiles of the solutions were monitored by measuring the decrease in the absorbance of Malachite Green at 617 nm in the time range 10-180 s after initiation of the reactions with 2 s intervals. The experimental calibration matrix for partial least squares (PLS-1) calibration was designed with 24 samples. The cross-validation method was used for selecting the number of factors. The results showed that simultaneous determination could be performed in the range 0.030-1.5 and 0.030-1.2 $\mu$g m$L ^{-1}$ for sulfite and sulfide, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to simultaneous determination of sulfite and sulfide in water samples and whole human blood.
Alcohol consumption triggers toxic effect to organs and tissues in the human body. The risks are essentially thought to be related to ethanol content in alcoholic beverages. The identification of ethanol in blood samples requires rapid, minimal sample handling, and non-destructive analysis, such as Raman Spectroscopy. This study aims to apply Raman Spectroscopy for identification of ethanol in blood samples. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized to obtain Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) spectra of blood samples. The SERS spectra were used for Partial Least Square (PLS) for determining ethanol quantitatively. To apply PLS method, $920{\sim}820cm^{-1}$ band interval was chosen and the spectral changes of the observed concentrations statistically associated with each other. The blood samples were examined according to this model and the quantity of ethanol was determined as that: first a calibration method was established. A strong relationship was observed between known concentration values and the values obtained by PLS method ($R^2=1$). Second instead of then, quantities of ethanol in 40 blood samples were predicted according to the calibration method. Quantitative analysis of the ethanol in the blood was done by analyzing the data obtained by Raman spectroscopy and the PLS method.
This study was conducted to establish a rapid analysis method for determining protein and moisture contents of pea. Ninety and eighty pea (Pisum sativum L.) lines were analyzed to determine protein and moisture contents, respectively using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Simple correlations (${\gamma}$) of protein content in a ground sample and an intact grain sample by an automatic regression method were 0.978 and 0.910, respectively. Simple correlations by partial least square regression/principal component analysis (PLS/PCA) methods were 0.982 and 0.925, respectively. Standard error of performance (SEP) in protein content was the lowest value, 0.446 in ground sample by PLS/PCA methods. Simple correlation of moisture content was the highest at 0.871 in ground samples. when using a standard regression method. Accuracy for the moisture content was slightly lower than for protein content. It was concluded that the NIRS method would be applicable only for rapid determination of protein content in pea.

We propose a new calibration method, which uses the linearization method for spectral responses and the repetitive adoptions of the linearization weight matrices to construct a frature. Weight matrices are estimated through multiple linear regression (or principal component regression or partial least squares) with forward variable selection. The proposed method is applied to three data sets. The first is FTIR spectral data set for FeO content from sinter process and the second is NIR spectra from trans-alkylation process having two constituent variables. The third is NIR spectra of crude oil with three physical property variables. To see the calibration performance, we compare the new method with the PLS. It is found that the new method gives a little better performance than the PLS and the calibration result is stable in spite of the collinearity among each selected spectral responses. Furthermore, doing the repetitive adoptions of linearization matrices in the proposed methods, uninformative variables are disregarded. That is, the new methods include the effect of variables subset selection, simultaneously.
