  • Calcium-channel blockers such as nifedipine could be associated with gingival overgrowth. The aim of this study was to examine the role of Paeonia lactiflora Pallas(PLP) on nifedipine-induced gingival hyperplasia along with submandibular secretory function in rats. Animals in divided groups received nifedipine (250 mg/kg) alone and in PLP(100, 200 mg/kg) in orally administration for 3 weeks. Pure submandibular saliva was collected intraorally by micropolyethylene cannula and the mandibular gingiva was examined by means of dissecting microscope for signs of redness, tickness, inflammation and exuda. Twenty-one days nifedipine treatment induced gingival hyperplasia accompanied with reduced salivary flow rate and concentrations total protein, epidermal growth factor(EGF) and calcium in comparison with normals. Co-treatment of animals with nifedifine and PLP protected from gingival hyperplasia and retained flow rate, and concentrations of total protein, EGF and calcium in normal levels.

  • Myo-inositol monophosphate phosphatase (IMPP) is a key enzyme in the phosphoinositide cell-signaling system. This study found that incubating the IMPP from a porcine brain with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) resulted in a time-dependent enzymatic inactivation. Spectral evidence showed that the inactivation proceeds via the formation of a Schiff's base with the amino groups of the enzyme. After the sodium borohydride reduction of the inactivated enzyme, it was observed that 1.8 mol phosphopyridoxyl residues per mole of the enzyme dimer were incorporated. The substrate, myo-inositol-1-phosphate, protected the enzyme against inactivation by PLP. After tryptic digestion of the enzyme modified with PLP, a radioactive peptide absorbing at 210 nm was isolated by reverse-phase HPLC. Amino acid sequencing of the peptide identified a portion of the PLP-binding site as being the region containing the sequence L-Q-V-S-Q-Q-E-D-I-T-X, where X indicates that phenylthiohydantoin amino acid could not be assigned. However, the result of amino acid composition of the peptide indicated that the missing residue could be designated as a phosphopyridoxyl lysine. This suggests that the catalytic function of IMPP is modulated by the binding of PLP to a specific lysyl residue at or near its substrate-binding site of the protein.

  • Objective: The study was aimed to investigate the rules of postprandial changes in intestine digesta dry matter (DM) flow and amino acid digestibility of growing pigs fed low-protein (LP) diets made of different starch. Methods: Eight barrows (28.8±2.1 kg) with a T-cannula at the distal ileum were randomly allotted to an 8×3 Youden square design. Treatments included: waxy corn starch LP (WLP); corn starch LP (CLP) and pea starch LP (PLP). Diets were given at 08:00 and 20:00. Digesta samples were collected in six 2-h stages from 08:00 to 20:00. Results: The Cr concentrations of ileal digesta increased and then decreased in WLP and CLP, while increased continuously in PLP as time passed after postprandial (p<0.05). Higher average Cr concentrations (0.78% and 0.84% vs 0.70%; p<0.05) and lower average DM flow (181.1 g/kg and 166.3 g/kg vs 240.3 g/kg; p<0.001) were observed in WLP and CLP, compared with PLP. The apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of most amino acids in WLP and CLP increased compared with that in PLP. No difference in lysine or methionine digestibility was observed. When digesta were collected in 2-h periods, the apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of amino acids did not change over time. When digesta was collected in 4-h periods from 16:00 to 20:00 and 6-h periods from 14:00 to 20:00 (p<0.05), WLP and CLP showed markedly higher amino acid digestibility than PLP Conclusion: High-amylose slowly digested starch can increase the DM flow at the distal ileum and reduce the apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of amino acids of pigs fed LP diets. Compared with waxy corn starch and corn starch, pea starch reduced the digestibility of amino acids in digesta collected after 4 h postprandial.

  • Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the key enzyme in the synthetic pathway of polyamines. This enzyme is a homodimeric and a pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP) dependent enzyme. We have isolated, a cDNA clone encoding ODC from brain cDNA library constructed from flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). The ODC cDNA contained a complete ORF consisting of 460 amino acids and one stop codon with comparison to nucleotide sequences of the flounder, zebrafish and rat ODC genes, the ODC genes were highly conserved. The transcription of ODC was analyzed with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) species in brain, kidney, liver, and embryo.

  • Articulation disorders are characterized by an inability to achieve clear pronunciation due to misuse of the articulators. In this paper, a method of detecting such disorders by comparing to the standard pronunciations is proposed. This method defines the standard pronunciations from the speeches of normal children by clustering them with three features which are the Linear Predictive Cepstral Coefficient (LPCC), the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC), and the Relative Spectral Analysis Perceptual Linear Prediction (RASTA-PLP). By calculating the distance between the centroid of the standard pronunciation and the inputted pronunciation, disordered speech whose features locates outside the cluster is detected. 89 children (58 of normal children and 31 of children with disorders) were recruited. 35 U-TAP test words were selected and each word's standard pronunciation is made from normal children and compared to each pronunciation of children with disorders. In the experiments, the pronunciations with disorders were successfully distinguished from the standard pronunciations.

  • To evaluate the clinical findings of the recurrent intussusception, 351 patients with 445 intussusceptions were reviewed. Recurrence rate, pattern of recurrence, reducibility, pathologic lead points (PLP), and operative findings and long term follow up of the multiple recurrences were analyzed. Of 351 patients, 303 had no recurrence, 26 had one recurrence, and 22 had multiple recurrences. Over all recurrence rate was 16.4% ; 18.5% were managed by air reduction, 16.2% by barium reduction and 5.9% by operation. Eleven PLPs were proved operatively and an additional 6 suspected PLPs were depicted radiologically. The most frequent PLP was ileal lymphoid hyperplasia. Intervals between reduction and recurrence were less than 2 weeks in 31 cases, between 2 weeks and 1 year in 55, and more than 1 year in 8. The longest interval was 2 years and 4 months.

  • In this paper, the PLP cepstrum which is close to human perceptual characteristics was extracted through the spread time area to get the temperal feature. Phonemes were recognized by artificial neural network similar to the learning method of human. The phoneme strings were matched by Markov models which well suited for sequence. Phoneme recognition for the continuous Korean speech had been done using speech blocks in which speech frames were gathered with unequal numbers. We parameterized the blocks using 7th order PLPs, PTP, zero crossing rate and energy, which neural network used as inputs. The 100 data composed of 10 Korean sentences which were taken from the speech two men pronounced five times for each sentence were used for the the recognition. As a result, maximum recognition rate of 94.4% was obtained. The sentence was recognized using Markov models generated by the phoneme strings recognized from earlier results the recognition for the 200 data which two men sounded 10 times for each sentence had been carried out. The sentence recognition rate of 92.5% was obtained.

  • Distress data, IRI, etc. are important factors in the evaluation of pavement condition. Recently, the need to consider tire-pavement noise in PMS (pavement management system) is raised. Generally, tire-pavement noise highly depends on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information to predict tire-pavement noise. Measurement of MPD (Mean Profile Depth) by using PLP (Portable Laser Profiler) provide very fast. The texture characteristics by means of MPD can be in a short time. hence, It can be a good alternative to give noise information, if MPD and tire-pavement noise have robust relationship. In this study, MPD and tire-pavement noise were simultaneously collected on the number of asphalt section to evaluate the tire-pavement noise due to the pavement texture characteristics. A set of statistical analysis was performed to propose relationship between tire-pavement noise and MPD for asphalt concrete pavement.
