Protective Effect of Plantago asiatica L. Leaf Ethanolic Extract Against Ferric Nitrilotriacetate-Induced Prostate Oxidative Damage in Rats (랫드에서의 Fe-NTA 유발 산화스트레스에 대한 차전초 에탄올 추출물의 전립선보호 효과)

  • Plantago asiatica L. (P. asiatica) has been used as one of the popular folk medicines in Asia for human health care practices. Various activities of P. asiatica have been reported, such as anti-oxidant, anti-glycation, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activity. Therefore, the potential of P. asiatica to reduce oxidative stress has been studied in several ways for over 20 years, especially at liver and kidney. However no investigation has been reported revealing its protective effect on prostate. Method: Treatment of P. asiatica leaf ethanolic extract (PLE) (1 g/kg body weight (b.w.), 2 g/kg b.w., or 4 g/kg b.w.) were given separately to animals for pretreatment once per day for 7 days, and on the seventh day ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA; 0.24 mmol Fe/kg b.w.), which is known as an oxidative stress-inducer at prostate, was administrated by i.p to negative control group. At the end of the study period, dissection was carried out for detecting the prostate protective effect of PLE. Result: Fe-NTA-treated animals produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in depletion of antioxidant biomaker, such as glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione s-transferase (GST) and increase of lipid peroxidation in prostate. However, PLE pretreatment resulted in an increase in the GSH, GST and GR levels concentration dependent manner and in an significant decrease in the levels of lipid peroxidation. Conclusion: Our data suggest that PLE may be effective in protecting oxidative stress-induced damage of prostate, and PLE may be an chemopreventive agent against Fe-NTA-mediated prostate oxidative damage.

A Quality System for Evaluating Reusability of Core Assets in Product Line Engineering (프로덕트 라인 공학의 핵심자산 재사용성 평가를 위한 품질시스템)

  • Product line engineering (PLE) is a new effective approach to software reuse, where applications are generated by instantiating a core asset which is a large-grained reuse unit. Hence, a core asset is a key element of PLE, and therefore the reusability of the core asset largely determines the success of PLE projects. A tore asset is a reusable part not a whole system, and supports not only variable functions but also common functions. However, there are limitations to evaluate reusability of core asset that has these unique characteristics. This paper proposes a comprehensive quality system for evaluating the reusability of core assets, based on ISO/IEC 9126. We first identify the key characteristics of core assets, and derive the set of quality attributes that characterizes the reusability of core assets. finally, we define metrics for each quality attribute. In addition, we provide guidelines for applying the metrics and perform a case study based on rental product line. Using the proposed quality system, reusability of core assets can be more effectively and correctly evaluated.

A Method for Instantiating Product Line Architecture using Formal Specifications (정형 명세를 이용한 제품계열 아키텍처의 인스턴스화 기법)

  • Product line engineering(PLE) is one of the recent and effective reuse approaches that enables developing a number of applications by instantiating a core asset. Elements of a core asset are product line architecture(PLA), component, and decision model. Among these elements, PLA is the key element since it defines the overall structure of the core asset. Although numerous PLE methodologies have been introduced, it is still unclear what should be the elements of a PLA and how to systematically instantiate it for specific applications. Formal specifications can play a key role in defining detailed and precise instantiation process. In this paper, we first present a meta model of PLA and show how to specify PLA in a formal language, Object-Z. Then, we propose instantiation rules using formal specification and those rules precisely define constraints for instantiating PLA. By applying the proposed formal specification, we believe PLA instantiation can be carried out precisely and correctly, yielding high quality software development.

  • We investigated the optical property and the electronic subband structure of InAs quantum dots in an InAsGa/GaAs well structure utilizing photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation (PLE) and near infrared transmission spectroscopy. From transmission and PLE spectra, we found three bound states in the InAs quantum dot and two bound states in InGaAs/GaAs quantum well, and correlated to the results of intersubband transitions observed in photocurrent spectrum.

  • Component-based development(CBD) has acquired a substantial acceptance in both academia and industry as an effective inter-organizational reuse technology. A component framework in product line engineering(PLE) which consists of related components, connectors and their semantics has a greater potential for reusability than components. In frameworks, components are glued with association, dependency and connections. Problems occur like affecting the implementation code of components when they are glued and replaced because the association and dependency relationships between COTS components which are acquired for application development do not match exactly. Especially, a connector may not only connect related components, but also mate partially-matched COTS components fit together. However, little has been studied to date about connectors that can be used practically. In this paper, we present a meta-model for connectors and show how a connector can be designed and implemented in practice. We propose five main patterns of connectors. Proposed major patterns Provide design guidelines for practical and efficient connector configuration based on component framework. And also, applying techniques and applied case studies of the major patterns show greatly increased applicability and reusability of the component without component modification.

  • Product Line Engineering (PLE) has been widely accepted as a representative software reuse methodology by using core assets. As a key element of core assets, product line architecture (PLA) should be generic to a set of applications in the product line (PL). However, the difference between PLA and single system architecture has not been treated well enough, so evaluating PLA still remains as one of the difficult tasks in PLE. In this paper, we identify two intrinsic but overlooked issues in PLA; variability propagation chain and conflicts between architectural elements. And, we present a metric-based methodto evaluate PLA from the perspective of the two issues. We believe that the two issues in PLA and the evaluation method would make designing high-quality PLA more feasible and effective.

  • Paeonia lactiflora Pall. was extracted with water and the Paeonia lactiflora Pall. extract (PLE) was tested for antimicrobial activities against Corynebacterium xerosis, Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas syringae. PLE showed pronounced antimicrobial effects at concentrations at or above 50 ${\mu}g$/mL. The activities were stable at $100^{\circ}C$ and over the pH range of 3-11. PLE may serve as a natural antimicrobial agent in food preservation. It is suggested that hydrophillic components in the extract synergistically perturb microbial membrane functions.
