  • A novel technology for CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexer) utilizing a PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit)-AWG (Arrayed Waveguide Grating) fabrication process is proposed. BPM (Beam Propagation Method) Simulation results on the employed parabolic-horn-type input slab waveguide of AWG and the performance of the 20 nm-channel spacing CWDM with flattened passband are presented. Waveguides of $0.75{\triangle}%$ have been used in this experiment and the insertion loss at the peak wavelength is 3.5 dB for a Gaussian spectrum and is 4.8 dB for a flat-top spectrum. The bandwidth at 3 dB is better than 10 nm and 13 nm for Gaussian and flat-top spectra, respectively.

  • This paper presents micromachining results on planar-lightwave-circuit (PLC) chips with Si substrate and the quartz substrate by using Ti:Sapphire femtosecond-pulsed laser. The ablation process with femtosecond laser pulses generates nothing of contamination, molten zone, microcracks, shock wave, delamination and recast layer. We also showed that the micromachine for PLC using femtosecond pulsed lasers is superior to that using nanosecond pulsed lasers. The insertion loss and the optical return loss of the 1 ${\times}$ 8 optical power splitters packaged with micromachined input- and output-port U-grooves were less than 11.0 ㏈ and more than 55 ㏈, respectively. The wavelength dependent loss (WDL) was distributed within $\pm$0.6 ㏈ and the polarization dependent loss (PDL) was less than 0.2 ㏈.

  • A spot-size converted Fabry-Perot laser diode (LD) was flip-chip bonded to a silica-terraced planar lightwave circuit(PLC) platform to examine the effect of the silica terrace on the heat dissipation of the LD module. From the measurement of the light-current characteristics, it was discovered that the silica terrace itself is not a strong thermal barrier, but the encapsulation of the integrated LD with an index-matching polymer resin more or less deteriorates the heat dissipation.

  • In this paper, designed and simulated Power Splitter (PS) integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based planar type optical waveguide devices (which is called here a PS-MZI). The PS-MZI optical waveguide sensor was preceded by a Y-junction, which splits the input power between the sensor, and a reference branch, to minimize the effect of optical power variations. The PS-MZI optical waveguide sensor induced changing phases of the incident beam, which had fallen upon the waveguide through computer simulation, according to the small changes in the index of refraction, thus beam intensity was changed. The waveguide were optimized at a wavelength of 1550 nm and fabricated according to the design rule of 0.45 delta%, which is the difference of refractive index between the core and clad. The fabrication of PS-MZI optical waveguide sensor was performed by a conventional planar lightwave circuit (PLC) fabrication process. The PS-MZI optical waveguide that was fabricated to be applied as a biosensor revealed a low insertion loss and a low polarization-dependent loss. After having etched the over-clad at the sensor part in the MZI optical waveguide that was fabricated, Ti deposition was made on the adhesion layer, and then Au thin-film deposition was carried out thereon. In addition, its optical properties were measured by having changed the index of refraction oil at the sensing part of the MZI. To apply the planar type PS-MZI optical waveguide as a biosensor, a detection test for Staphylococcus aureus was conducted according to changes in concentration, having adopted Ti-alkoxide as ligand. The detection result of the S. aureus by the PS-MZI optical waveguide sensor was possible to the level of $10^1$ CFU/ml.

  • We developed aerosol flame deposition method and made stress-free Pyrex-based optical waveguide on silicon substrate using this method. Zr is doped to control the refractive index of Pyrex waveguide layers. The refractive index of the film changes from 1.460 to 1.475 as the content of Zr changes from 0 to 3 wt%. Er is doped to see the possibility of applying this Pyrex waveguide as PLC-type (Planar Lightwave Circuit) optical amplifier. The refractive index of the film changes from 1.460 to 1.465 as the content of Zr changes from 0 to 1 wt%. Light launching using a prism coupler to the fabricated waveguide showed good quality for application to PLC. The polarization dependence of refractive-index of the Pyrex film is measured to be less than $2{\times}10^{-4}$.

  • We have fabricated a planar lightwave circuit (PLC) hybrid-integrated optical sub-assembly of a triplexer using a thin film filter (TFF)-attached wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and photodiode (PD) carriers. Two types of TFFs were attached to a diced side of a silica-terraced PLC platform, and the PD carriers with a $45^{\circ}$ mirror on which pin-PDs were bonded were assembled with the platform. A clear transmitter eye-pattern and minimum receiver sensitivity of -24.5 dBm were obtained under 1.25 Gb/s operation for digital applications, and a second-order inter-modulation distortion (IMD2) of -70 dBc was achieved for an analog receiver.

  • Recently, high speed transmission and large information demand have been increased. Also, researches of integrated optical device for large production and high-efficient planar lightwave circuit (PLC) have been increased. In this paper, integrated optical alignment is proposed which makes passive alignment between optical device and optical fiber possible. The integrated optical device consists of splitter structures which have one input and two outputs. The proposed integrated structure was fabricated by roll-to-roll (RTR) processing method. This method enables to manufacture continuously and the processing time can be shortened. Optical property of the fabricated optical device showed 3.9 dB insertion loss and 0.2 dB optical uniformity using the light source with 1550 nm wavelength.

  • The roll to roll (RTR) imprint process is an integrated imprinting process where steps ranging from assignment of a function to a flexible rolled substrate to rewinding of the same substrate in a roll are performed. RTR imprint is a green, low-cost technology without limitations. In RTR imprint, it is important to manufacture the mold precisely and maintain uniform process condition. To this, process conditions have to include precision tension control, optimization of process parameters. We introduced RTR imprint to fabricate planar lightwave circuit (PLC) device for communication, by new schematic design and process optimization, we fabricated successfully optical device. The fabricated optical device showed the optical performance which was satisfied to meet international standard.

  • We have proposed a novel planar lightwave circuit (PLC) optical sensor to monitor the contamination in a flow-cell where water is continuously supplied through a water quality measurement system. We designed a PLC chip with a V-shape waveguide and the simulated its function as a sensor for monitoring contamination in a flow-cell using a numerical the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) analysis. A novel cross type of waveguide was introduced to make the PLC chip of the V-shaped waveguide. The fabricated PLC was cut into the cross waveguide. A change in the optical propagation loss of the PLC sensor was observed after immersing the PLC sensor into city water. It was determined that the propagation loss of the PLC sensor was 3 dB at a wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ in the city water for 15 days.

  • We present a cost-effective dual polarization quadrature phase-shift coherent receiver module using a silica planar lightwave circuit (PLC) hybrid assembly. Two polarization beam splitters and two $90^{\circ}$ optical hybrids are monolithically integrated in one silica PLC chip with an index contrast of $2%-{\Delta}$. Two four-channel spot-size converter integrated waveguide-photodetector (PD) arrays are bonded on PD carriers for transverse-electric/transverse-magnetic polarization, and butt-coupled to a polished facet of the PLC using a simple chip-to-chip bonding method. Instead of a ceramic sub-mount, a low-cost printed circuit board is applied in the module. A stepped CuW block is used to dissipate the heat generated from trans-impedance amplifiers and to vertically align RF transmission lines. The fabricated coherent receiver shows a 3-dB bandwidth of 26 GHz and a common mode rejection ratio of 16 dB at 22 GHz for a local oscillator optical input. A bit error rate of $8.3{\times}10^{-11}$ is achieved at a 112-Gbps back-to-back transmission with off-line digital signal processing.
