  • Thermal comfort inside a passenger car has been receiving large attention in automobile industries. Especially, the performance of windshield defroster is important in the design of a car to ensure passenger comport and safety. Thereby, better understanding on the ventilation flow along the vehicle windshield is essential to evaluate the performance of windshield defroster. However, most previous studies dealt with the defrost flow using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations or scale-down model experiments. In this study, a real commercial automobile was used to investigate the flow discharged from the vehicle defroster and the ventilation flow along the windshield using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. The experimental data would be useful to understand the flow characteristics in detail and also can be used to validate numerical predictions.

  • Saltation is the most important mechanism of wind-blown sand transport. Till now the interaction between wind and sand has not been fully understood. In this study the saltation of sand sample taken from Taklimakan desert was tested in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The captured particle images containing both the tracers for wind and saltating sand, were separated by a digital phase mask technique. Both PIV and PTV methods were employed to extract the velocity fields of wind and the dispersed sand particles, respectively. The mean streamwise wind velocity field and turbulent statistics with and without sand transportation were compared, revealing the effect of the moving sand on the wind field. This study is helpful to understand the interaction between wind and blown sand (in saltation), and provide reliable experimental data fur evaluating numerical models.

  • The swimming abilities of aquatic-animals are of vital importance to their ecology. The relationship between outer shapes and the swimming ability has been focused just a few centuries ago by engineering community. Present paper surveys the recent studies of the aquatic-animals' swimming performance in the morphological point of view. Also an experimental study is performed in order to investigate the effect of the tail fin's shape on the propulsive performance. The result showed that the morphological study provided valuable data for exploring the secrets of the aquatic-animals' swimming performance.

  • The turbulent flow with wake, reattachment and recirculation flow is very important from the viewpoint of engineering. But that is still difficult because of especially the unsteady problems which are related with the vehicle dynamics and the aerodynamics noise. This paper evaluate LES that can analyze about all fluid flow region including the laminar, transition and turbulent. So we compare the results of LES with those of PIV measurement and Reynolds averaging models. In conclusion, LES predicts flow behavior better than Reynolds averaging models.

  • A present study is the flow characteristics of impinging jet by PIV measurement and numerical analysis. The flow characteristics of impinging jet flow are affected greatly by nozz1e inlet velocity An circular sharp edged nozzle type($45^{\circ}$ ) was used to achieve uniform mean velocity at the nozz1e inlet, and its diameter is 10 mm(d). Therefore, the flow characteristics on the impinging jet can be changed largely by the control of main flow In this parent study, we investigate the effects of inlet velocity, its variable is nozzle inlet Reynolds numbers (Re=1500, 3000, 4500, 6000 and 7500)

  • The present study examined the effects of micro leading-edge flaps on the vortex characteristic changes of a double-delta wing through pressure measurements of the wing upper surface and PIV measurements of the wing-leeward flow region. The experimental data were collected and analyzed while changing the deflection angle of the leading-edge flaps to investigate the feasibility of using micro leading-edge flaps as flow control devices. The test results revealed that the leading edge modification could greatly alter the vortex flow pattern and the wing surface pressure of the delta wing, which suggested that the leading-edge flaps could be used as an effective device for the control of delta-wing vortex flow.

  • A digital image processing technique which is able to get the velocity vector distribution of a surface of the spilled oil in the ocean without contacting the flow itself. This technique is based upon the PIV(Particle Imaging Velocimetry) technique and its system mainly consists of a high sensitive camera, a CCD camera, an image grabber, and a host computer in which an image processing algorithm is adopted for velocity vector acquisition. For the acquisition of the advective velocity vector of floating matters on the ocean, a new multi-frame tracking algorithm is proposed, and for the acquisition of the diffusion velocity vector distribution of the spilt oil onto the water surface, a high sensitive gray-level cross-correlation algorithm is proposed.

  • This study investigated on details of flow characteristics of a multi-blade fan for domestic ventilation. Experiments and analysis were carried out to describe on flow pattern with variations of cut-off angle near the scroll housing throat, which were performed by PIV measurement for the flow field and by total pressure probes. The stagnation point at cut-off region of the fan moves to the exit of the scroll housing as the cut-off angle increases. The movement of stagnation point and the variation of throat area of the scroll housing influence to the distribution of velocity magnitude at the exit of the fan. Furthermore, a large distortion of the velocity distribution at the scroll exit causes to increase mixing loss along the flow path.

  • This experimental study investigates the wake flow behind the flow characteristics around staggered tube arrays. In this experiment, the principal aim is to investigate the transition mechanism of the large vortex generating process in the wake having unique vortex shedding pattern. The detailed visualization is carried out using the PIV measurement. The transition mechanism of the large generating vortex is clarified by showing the streak lines. the vorticity and the statistical fluctuating velocity distributions.

  • We investigate an internal flow pattern of an evaporating droplet where the contact line non-uniformly recedes. By using tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry, we observe a three-dimensional azimuthal vortex pair that is maintained until the droplet is completely dried. The non-uniformly receding contact line motion breaks the flow symmetry. Finally, a simplified scaling model presents that the mechanical stress along the contact line is proportional to the vorticity magnitude, which is validated by the experimental results.
