A process of 3-D particle image velocimetry, called here, as '3-D stereo PIV' was developed for the measurement of a section field of 3-D complex flows. The present method includes modeling of camera by a calibrator based on the homogeneous coordinate system, transfromation of oblique-angled image to transformed image, identification of 2-D velocity vectors by 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system and finally 3-D animation as the post processing. In principle, as two frame images only are necessary for the single instantaneous analysis of a section field of 3-D flow, more effective vectors are obtainable contrary to the previous multi-frame vector algorithm. An experimental system was also used for the application of the proposed method. Three analog CCD cameras and an Argon-Ion Laser(300mW) for illumination were adopted to capture the wake flow behind a bluff obstacle.
The purpose of this study is to compare the time mean velocity distribution, the time mean kinetic energy, and the time mean turbulence intensity between vertical and horizontal flow fields in a coaxial circular pipe by PIV measurement. Experiments are performed at a Reynolds number 2,000, measuring regions divided as the section regions A, B, C, D in flow fields. The angle of the high-frequency ultrasonic is selected in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ to the flow axes and it is reflected several times. In results, it is clarified that the effect of gravity is given in the vertical flow field compared with the horizontal flow field and the ultrasonic affects the turbulence enhancement. And kinetic energy and turbulence intensity with ultrasonic are shown slightly bigger than those in flow field without it.
Many important properties in colloidal systems are usually determined by surface charge ($\zeta$-potential) of the contacted solid surface. In this study, $\zeta$-potential of glass $\mu$-channel was evaluated from the electro-osmotic velocity distribution. The electro-osmotic velocity inside a glass $\mu$-channel was measured using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. This evaluation method is more simple and easy to approach, compared with the traditional streaming potential technique. The $\zeta$-potential in the glass $\mu$-channel was measured for two different mole NaCl solutions. The effect of an anion surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), on the electro-osmotic velocity and $\zeta$-potential in the glass surface was also studied. In the range of $0\∼6$mM, the surfactant SDS was added to NaCl solution in four different mole concentrations. As a result, the addition of SDS increases $\zeta$-potential in the surface of the glass $\mu$-channel. The measured $\zeta$-potential was found to vary from-260 to-70mV. When negatively charged particles were used, the flow direction was opposite compared with that of neutral particles. The $\zeta$-potential has a positive sign for the negative particles.
Chemical Mechanical Polishing(CMP) in semiconductor production is characterized its output property by Removal Rate(RR) and Non-Uniformity(NU). Some Previous works shows that RR is determined by production of pressure and velocity and NC is also largely affected by velocity of flow-field during CMP. This study is about the direct measurement of velocity of slurry during CMP and reconstruction whole flow-field by Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) Techniques. Typical PIV system is tuned adequately for inspecting CMP and Slurry Flow-field is measured by changing both Pad RPM and Carrier RPM. The results show that velocity is majorly determined not by Carrier RPM, but by Pad RPM.
An experimental study has performed to identify the mixing characteristics of basket mill by using PIV and LIF techniques. The velocity fields were measured at three sectors for each two types of basket mill model and various impeller speed. To verify the results of velocity field measurement and the concentration field, LIF measurement also was performed for three cases. There was an inactive region and a descending flow to the bottom of basket mill at the original model. But when the impeller type and the guide shape were changed, internal flow structure was improved suitably for mixing and dispersion. The improvement result in increment of inflow flow rate at the basket entrance about $10\%$.
In the present study, The characteristics of developing steady laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a $180^{\circ}$ curved duct were examined In the entrance region through experimental measurement. Flow characteristics such as shear stress distributions, pressure distributions and friction coefficient experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by using the PIV system. For the PIV measurement by particles produced from mosquito coils particles. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400mm. Experimental results can be summarized as follows. Critical Reynolds number, $Re_{cr}$ which indicates transition from laminar steady flow to transition steady flow was 2,150. Shear stress per unit length on the wall was stronger than that in the fully developed flow region. This was attributed to the fact that shear stress and pressure loss in the curvature of a duct were increased. Pressure distributions were gradually decreased irrespective of Reynolds number In the whole test section. This trends were in a good agreement with the reference results. Pipe friction coefficient in the steady state flow region was calculate from method of least squares. The co-relationship between fiction coefficient and Reynolds number was established as follow; ${\lambda}=56/Re$.
Many important properties in colloidal systems are usually determined by surface charge $({\zeta}-potential)$ of the contacted solid surface. In this study, ${\zeta}-potential$ of glass ${\mu}-channel$ was evaluated from the electro-osmotic velocity distribution. The electro-osmotic velocity inside a glass f-channel was measured using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. This evaluation method is more simple and easy to approach, compared with the traditional streaming potential technique. The ${\zeta}-potential$ in the glass ${\mu}-channel$ was measured fur two different mole NaCl solutions. The effect of an anion surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), on the electro-osmotic velocity and f-potential in the glass surface was also studied. In the range of $0{\sim}6mM$, the surfactant SDS was added to NaCl solution in few different mole concentrations. As a result, the addition of SDS increases ${\zeta}-potential$ in the surface of the glass ${\mu}-channel$. The measured $\zeta-potential$ was found to vary from -260 to -70mV. When negatively charged particles were used, the flow direction was opposite compared with that of neutral particles. The ${\zeta}-potential$ has a positive sign for the negative particles.
This paper is the second investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous work, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems. In this study, intake valve angle is selected as a main parameter for the assessment because the main flow direction to cylinder governed by this angle has the strongest influence on the in-cylinder flow pattern. For this purpose, four heads, which have the different angle, are prepared and the flow characteristics are estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75 times bore position apart from the cylinder head, which is widely used plane in the steady flow measurement. The results show that both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75 plane, however, the effects of two factors act in the opposite direction. In addition, the profile's influence is much greater than that of the eccentricity.
