Purpose: A lab-scale timber carriage using a servo motor system was built. When two motors move a carriage, wire tension is changed according to the different line speeds caused by a wire drum's changing diameter, leading to inappropriate traveling characteristics of the carriage. In order to overcome this problem, PID Control was used to control the motor speed. Methods: Ziegler-Nichols method was used to determine PID gains. Results: The initial PID gains were 1.8, 0.025, and 0.006, respectively, and optimal gains of 1.4 and 0.010 for P and I gain were obtained experimentally. Conclusions: The results showed that constant wire tension could be maintained by controlling the speed of the motor using PI control. Overshoot occurred at initial motor operation due to vibration and elasticity of the wire itself.

The stabilization control of ball-beam system is difficult because of its nonlinearity and structural unstability. Futhermore, a series of classical methods such as the PID and the full state feedback controller(FSFC) based on the local linearizations have narrow stabilizable regions. At the same time, the fine tunings of their gain parameters are also troublesome. Therefore, in this paper, three improved design techniques of stabilization controller for a ball-beam system were proposed. These parameter tuning methods in the double PID controller(DPIDC), the FSFC and the a sliding mode controller(SMC) were dependent upon the Real Value Elitist Genetic Algorithm (RVEGA). Finally, by applying the DPIDC, the FSFC and the Real Variable Elitist Genetic Algorithm based Sliding Mode Control(RVEGA SMC) to the stabilizations of a ball-beam system, the performances of the RVEGA SMC technique were showed to be superior to those of two other type controllers.
To design a fuzzy controller for DC servo-motor, a systematic procedure is proposed. Fuzzy rule base is simply designed through utilizing both the PID gain and the pole-zero cancelation. The results of simulation show that the control system has good performances.

A pressure control law to regulate pressure of gas generator is suggested. To design a model based control law, the governing equation which consists of Robert and conservation equation is built and verified through the ground burning test. PID and nonlinear adaptive control laws are designed to analyze the loop response characteristics under the system which has varying eigen properties arisen from combustion volume change. It is suggested that new approach, gain scheduling design, is required to overcome the defects identified from numerical simulation results of the two control laws. The newly suggested scheme shows good control performance even under disturbances and measurement noise.

A pressure control law to regulate pressure of gas generator is suggested. To design a model based control law, the governing equation which is consisted of Robert and conservation equation is built and verified through the ground burning test. PID and nonlinear adaptive control laws are designed to evaluate the loop response characteristics under the system which has varying eigen properties as combustor volume is increased. It is suggested that new approach, gain scheduling design, is required to overcome the defects identified from numerical simulation results of the two control laws. The newly suggested scheme showed good control performance even under disturbances and measurement noise.
Recently, technical trend for machine tools is focused on enhancement of speed and accuracy. High speedy processing causes thermal and structural deformation of objects from the machine tools. Water cooler has to be applied to machine tools to reduce the thermal negative influence with accurate temperature controlling system. Existing On-Off control type can't control temperature accurately because compressor is operated and stopped repeatedly and causes increment of power consumption and decrement of the expected life of compressor. The goal of this study is to minimize temperature error in steady state. In addition, control period of an electronic expansion valve were considered to increment of lifetime of the machine tools and quality of product with a water cooler. PI controller is designed using type of hot-gas bypass for precise control of temperature. Gain of PI is decided easily by method of critical oscillation response, excellent performance of control is shown with 4.24% overshoot and ${\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$error of steady state. Also, error range of temperature is controlled within $0.2^{\circ}C$although disturbance occurs.

This paper describes the design principle of a fuzzy PID controller with fixed parameters, proposes the simulified form of a fuzzy PID controller to increase the computational efficiency and analyzes stability of a proposed fuzzy PID controller. After a detailed stability analysis using ‘small gain theorem’, a simple and practical sufficient condition for the BIBO stability of the overall feedback control system is derived. The derived stability condition offers a calculation method to obtain parameters of a fuzzy PID controller from parameters of a stable PID controller. Finally several computer simulations are executed to confirm the effectiveness of the fuzzy PID controller with fixed parameters.

The root-locus method is often employed when a controller is designed to find controller gain. It is usually used to determine one parameter gain while most controllers for industrial applications have more than one controller gain. For example PID controller has three controller gains, i.e. P, I, and D gains. Thus the conventional root-locus technique cannot complete the design of a controller with more than one controller gain. One way to overcome this drawback has been to apply the root-locus technique for one parameter while other parameters are assumed to be proportional to the parameter or to be constant. However this approach could lead to limited performance of the controller and if we try to adjust the proportional ratio or constants then it could be a long and tedious process of trial and error. Thus it is required to find an effective method for the root-locus technique to design controllers with more than one parameter. To this end this paper proposes an extended root-locus method for controllers with two parameters. In this paper Matlab is used as a computation tool to show the effectiveness of our method by solving examples numerically. As a result we obtained an extended root-locus illustrated in two-dimensional space for a control system with two parameters. The paper then presents how to find two controller gains based on this result of the extended root-locus. The main idea is that we can find the parameters by approaching the desired poles. It is expected that the proposed idea will help control engineers to easily design control systems using the root-locus technique, resulting in more accurate and faster control systems. Note that the extended root-locus idea can be applied to controller design problems with multiple parameters.

The main motivation of this research is to develop an intelligent control strategy for Activated Sludge Process (ASP). ASP is a complex and nonlinear dynamic system because of the characteristic of wastewater, the change in influent flow rate, weather conditions, and etc. The mathematical model of ASP also includes uncertainties which are ignored or not considered by process engineer or controller designer. The ASP is generally controlled by a PID controller that consists of fixed proportional, integral, and derivative gain values. The PID gains are adjusted by the expert who has much experience in the ASP. The ASP model based on $Matlab^{(R)}5.3/Simulink^{(R)}3.0$ is developed in this paper. The performance of the model is tested by IWA(International Water Association) and COST(European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) data that include steady-state results during 14 days. The advantage of the developed model is that the user can easily modify or change the controller by the help of the graphical user interface. The ASP model as a typical nonlinear system can be used to simulate and test the proposed controller for an educational purpose. Various control methods are applied to the ASP model and the control results are compared to apply the proposed intelligent control strategy to a real ASP. Three control methods are designed and tested: conventional PID controller, fuzzy logic control approach to modify setpoints, and fuzzy-PID control method. The proposed setpoints changer based on the fuzzy logic shows a better performance and robustness under disturbances. The objective function can be defined and included in the proposed control strategy to improve the effluent water quality and to reduce the operating cost in a real ASP.

In the thermal power plant, there are six manipulated variables: main steam flow, feedwater flow, fuel flow, air flow, spray flow, and gas recirculation flow. There are five controlled variables: generator output, main steam pressure, main steam temperature, exhaust gas density, and reheater steam temperature. Therefore, the thermal power plant control system is a multinput and output system. In the control system, the main steam temperature is typically regulated by the fuel flow rate and the spray flow rate, and the reheater steam temperature is regulated by the gas recirculation flow rate. However, strict control of the steam temperature must be maintained to avoid thermal stress. Maintaining the steam temperature can be difficult due to heating value variation to the fuel source, time delay changes in the main steam temperature versus changes in fuel flow rate, difficulty of control of the main steam temperature control and the reheater steam temperature control system owing to the dynamic response characteristics of changes in steam temperature and the reheater steam temperature, and the fluctuation of inner fluid water and steam flow rates during the load-following operation. Up to the present time, the Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller has been used to operate this system. However, it is very difficult to achieve an optimal PID gain with no experience, since the gain of the PID controller has to be manually tuned by trial and error. This paper focuses on the characteristic comparison of the PID controller and the modified 2-DOF PID Controller (Two-Degrees-Freedom Proportional-Integral-Derivative) on the DCS (Distributed Control System). The method is to design an optimal controller that can be operated on the thermal generating plant in Seoul, Korea. The modified 2-DOF PID controller is designed to enable parameters to fit into the thermal plant during disturbances. To attain an optimal control method, transfer function and operating data from start-up, running, and stop procedures of the thermal plant have been acquired. Through this research, the stable range of a 2-DOF parameter for only this system could be found for the start-up procedure and this parameter could be used for the tuning problem. Also, this paper addressed whether an intelligent tuning method based on immune network algorithms can be used effectively in tuning these controllers.
