  • A method for calculation of the contribution of $\pi$ bonding molecular orbitals to the dipole moments for octahedral [M(III)$A_3B_3$] type complexes has been developed [M(III) = Ti(III), V(III), Cr(III), Fe(III) or Co(III); A = O or N; B = N, S or Cl]. The contribution of ${\pi}$ bonding molecular orbitals to the dipole moments is found to be smaller than that of ${\sigma}$ bonding molecular orbitals but this contribution may not be negligible even for chelate complexes in which delocalization of ${\pi}$ electron is assumed. The calculated dipole moments (u = $u_{\sigma}$ + $u_{\pi}$) are closer to the experimental values than those for the case where only ${\sigma}$ bonds are assumed to be formed.

  • Trichomonas vaginalis induces proinflammation in cervicovaginal mucosal epithelium. To investigate the signaling pathways in $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in cervical mucosal epithelium after T. vaginalis infection, the phosphorylation of PI3K/AKT and MAPK pathways were evaluated in T. vaginalis-infected SiHa cells in the presence and absence of specific inhibitors. T. vaginalis increased $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in SiHa cells, in a parasite burden-dependent and incubation time-dependent manner. In T. vaginalis-infected SiHa cells, AKT, ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and JNK were phosphorylated from 1 hr after infection; however, the phosphorylation patterns were different from each other. After pretreatment with inhibitors of the PI3K/AKT and MAPK pathways, $TNF-{\alpha}$ production was significantly decreased compared to the control; however, $TNF-{\alpha}$ reduction patterns were different depending on the type of PI3K/MAPK inhibitors. $TNF-{\alpha}$ production was reduced in a dose-dependent manner by treatment with wortmannin and PD98059, whereas it was increased by SP600125. These data suggested that PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling pathways are important in regulation of $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in cervical mucosal epithelial SiHa cells. However, activation patterns of each pathway were different from the types of PI3K/MAPK pathways.

  • Four Holstein calves 7-day-old were infected with C parvum oocysts for parasitological and pathological investigations of bovine cryptosporidiosis. Of those calf 1 was orally administered with $7{\times}10^6$ oocysts of C parvum isolated from a Korean mouse (VRI-CN91), and calf 2 with same number of C parvum oocysts provided by Washington State University(WSU). The rest (calf 3 and 4) were orally administered with $1{\times}10^8$ oocysts of VRI-CN91 strain. Calf 1 commenced to discharge oocysts in feces at days 6 post inoculation(PI), and it reached a peak $1.4{\times}10^7$ oocysts per gram of feces(OPG) on day 8 PI. Calf 2 commenced to discharge oocysts in feces at day 4 PI, and it reached a peak $3.75{\times}10^6$ OPG on day 7 PI. Calf 3 and 4 commenced to discharge oocysts in feces at day 3 and day 4 PI, and it reached a peak on day 7 PI (calf 3, $7.8{\times}10^6$ OPG; calf 4, $1.7{\times}10^6$ OPG). Clinically, the calves began to show mucoid-watery diarrhea at day 3 to 5 PI, and the sign lasted 5 to 7 days. Calf 2 died on day 9 PI with a severe dehydration. On necropsy the intestine was found to be congested and hemorrhagic. Protozoan oocysts were observed mainly in the ileum and occasionally in jejunum. The results in the present study indicate that the Korean isolate was pathogenic in calves.

  • Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most serious diseases that affect the quantity and quality of rice production. The use of resistant rice varieties would be the most effective way to control the rice blast. However R gene incorporation into the rice variety takes time and pathogen could overcome the R gene effects after for a while. For monitoring the rice blast resistance gene distribution in Korean varieties, the four major blast resistance genes against M. oryzae were screened in a number of Korean rice varieties using molecular markers. Of the 120 rice varieties tested, 40 were found to contain the Pi-5 gene, 25 for the Pi-9 gene, 79 for Pi-b and 40 for the Pi-ta gene. None of these rice varieties includes tested 4 R genes. 3 R genes combination, Pi-5/Pi-9/Pi-b, Pi-5, Pi-9.Pi-ta, or Pi-9/Pi-b/Pi-ta were found in 12 varieties, the rice blast disease severity were showed as resistant in the rice verities containing Pi-9/Pi-b/Pi-ta R genes combination, respectively. Also pathogenic diversity of M. oryzae isolates collected in the rice field from 2004 to 2015 in rice field in Korea were analyzed using rice blast monogenic lines, each harboring a single blast resistance gene. Compatibility of blast isolates against rice blast monogenic lines carrying the resistance genes Pi5, Pi9, Pib, and Piz showed dynamic changes by year. It indicates that pathogen has high evolutionary potential adapted host resistances to increase fitness and would lead to rice blast resistance bred into the cultivar becoming ineffective eventually.

  • Crystal structure of coumarin 6 has been solved by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are triclinic, space group P-1, with a=8.823(2) ${\AA}$, b=8.898(2) ${\AA}$, c=11.025(9) ${\AA}$, ${\alpha}$=86.41(3)$^{\circ}$, ${\beta}$=85.39(3)$^{\circ}$, ${\gamma}$=76.23(3)$^{\circ}$, Mr=350.42, V=837.1(3) ${\AA}^3$, Z=2 and R=0.0516. The molecules are packed parallel to each other by weaker ${\pi}{\cdots}{\pi}$ and C-H${\cdots}{\pi}$ interactions. The detailed geometry of C-H${\cdots}{\pi}$ interactions were discussed. The hydrogen bonds and non-traditional C-H${\cdots}O$ interactions join the no-parallel molecules together. All the molecules packed wall-like with the molecular brick.

  • $NF-{\kappa}B$ is a transcription factor involved in the innate immunity against bacterial infection and inflammation. It is also known to render cells resistant to the apoptosis caused by some anticancer drugs. Such a chemoresistance of cancer cells may be related to the activation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ transcription factor; however, the mechanism of activation is not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that a chemotherapeutic agent, etoposide, independently stimulates the $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ degradation pathway and PI3-kinase/Akt signaling pathway: The classical $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ degradation pathway leads to the nuclear translocation and DNA binding of p65 subunit through $IKK{\beta}$ kinase, whereas the PI3-kinase/Akt pathway plays a distinct role in activating this transcription factor. The PI3-kinase/Akt pathway acts on the p50 subunit of the $NF-{\kappa}B$ transcription factor and enhances the DNA binding affinity of the p50 protein. It may also explain the role of the PI3-kinase/Akt pathway in the anti-apoptotic function of $NF-{\kappa}B$ during chemoresistance of cancer cells.

  • This paper deals with the design of a robust PI controller for a vehicle suspension system. A method, which is related to computation of all stabilizing PI controllers, is applied to the vehicle suspension system in order to obtain optimum control between passenger comfort and driving performance. The PI controller parameters are calculated by plotting the stability boundary locus in the $(k_p,\;k_i)$-plane and illustrative results are presented. In reality, like all physical systems, the vehicle suspension system parameters contain uncertainty. Thus, the proposed method is also used to compute all the parameters of a PI controller that stabilize a vehicle suspension system with uncertain parameters.

  • The Riemann's zeta function $\zeta(s)$ has been known as answer for a number of primes $\pi$(x) less than given number x. In prime number theorem, there are another approximation function $\frac{x}{lnx}$,Li(x), and R(x). The error about $\pi$(x) is R(x) < Li(x) < $\frac{x}{lnx}$. The logarithmic integral function is Li(x) = $\int_{2}^{x}\frac{1}{lnt}dt$ ~ $\frac{x}{lnx}\sum\limits_{k=0}^{\infty}\frac{k!}{(lnx)^k}=\frac{x}{lnx}(1+\frac{1!}{(lnx)^1}+\frac{2!}{(lnx)^2}+\cdots)$. This paper shows that the $\pi$(x) can be represent with finite Li(x), and presents generalized prime counting function $\sqrt{{\alpha}x}{\pm}{\beta}$. Firstly, the $\pi$(x) can be represent to $Li_3(x)=\frac{x}{lnx}(\sum\limits_{t=0}^{{\alpha}}\frac{k!}{(lnx)^k}{\pm}{\beta})$ and $Li_4(x)=\lfloor\frac{x}{lnx}(1+{\alpha}\frac{k!}{(lnx)^k}{\pm}{\beta})}k\geq2$ such that $0{\leq}t{\leq}2k$. Then, $Li_3$(x) is adjusted by $\pi(x){\simeq}Li_3(x)$ with ${\alpha}$ and error compensation value ${\beta}$. As a results, this paper get the $Li_3(x)=Li_4(x)=\pi(x)$ for $x=10^k$. Then, this paper suggests a generalized function $\pi(x)=\sqrt{{\alpha}x}{\pm}{\beta}$. The $\pi(x)=\sqrt{{\alpha}x}{\pm}{\beta}$ function superior than Riemann's zeta function in representation of prime counting.
