  • Copolyesters (PEHT) of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly (1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (PHT) were synthesized by the solution polymerization with the PHT unit contents of less than 30 mol %, and their physical properties were studied. As the content of PHT unit in PEHT was increased, glass transition temperature, crystallization rate, thermal stability increased, whereas melting temperature decreased. When the PHT unit contents were 16.5 and 24.9 mol%, nematic mesophase was observed. Wide angle X-ray diffraction pattern showed the peaks originated from both PET unit and PHT unit.

Inhibitory Effect of Dimethyl Sulforxide on Phenytoin-induced Fetal Cleft Palate and Maternal Corticosterone Level (Phenytoin의 태아 구개열 유발과 모체 혈청 Corticosterone 증가에 대한 Dimethyl Sulfoxide 억제 작용)

  • It is well known that phenytoin (PHT), a commonly prescribed anticonvulsant, has teratogenicity in experimental animals and human. The major malformation induced by PHT in mouse is cleft palate. The mechanisms of the embryotoxic effects of PHT are unknown. However, PHT and synthetic glucocorticoids share several features with respect to their teratogenicity, and it was known that PHT increased maternal corticosterone level. Therefore PHT-induced cleft palate may be mediated indirectly by elevated maternal corticosterone. Recently it was reported that secalonic acid Dinduced cleft palate and elevated endogenous corticosterone level, and that such effects were antagonized by DMSO. The purpose of this work was to investigate whether the elevated maternal corticosterone is associated with the teratogenicity of PHT in the ICR mouse fetuses by treatment with PHT or PHT plus DMSO. PHT (74mg/kg, BW) was daily administered intraperitoneally on day 10~12 of gestation with and without DMSO(2ml/kg, BW), and the fetal malformation was observed on day 18. Maternal serum corticosterone and fetal PHT levels were determined by HPLC. The results are summarized as follows. 1)The percentage of cleft palate incidense in fetuses following treatment with PHT on day 10~12 of gestation was 51.7%. 2)There was a significant decrement in the cleft palate incidence in fetuses to 30.8% in the group treated with PHT plus DMSO compared with 51.7% in that with PHT alone. 3) Maternal serum corticosterone levels following treatment with PHT on day 10~12 of gestation increased by 116~343% compared with that of vehicle control. Such effect was antagonized by DMSO. 4)PHT concentration in the fetuses was not affected by DMSO. These results suggest that PHT-induced cleft-palate in fetuses seems to be closely associated with the elevation of maternal corticosterone level.

Effect of Pahyeolsandong-tang (Poxiesanteng-tang) in Tibia Fracture-induced Mice (경골 파혈산동탕(破血散疼湯)이 골절 생쥐의 골 유합에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the bone healing effect of Pahyeolsandong-tang (PHT)(Poxiesanteng-tang) extract in tibia fracture-induced mice. Methods PHT was extracted using a solution of 35% ethanol in 60℃ for 8 hours. Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (normal, control, PHT 50 and PHT 100). Mice of experimental groups were medicated with PHT 50 or 100 mg/kg for 7 to 21 days. To clarify the effect of bone fracture healing, relative messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of osteocalcin (OCN), runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), osterix (OSX), Sox9, collagen type II alpha 1 chain (Col2a1), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG) were examined. Results In in vitro experiment, relative mRNA expression of OCN, Runx2, Col2a1 was significantly increased in PHT treated group to compare with control differentiation group. In in vivo experiment, relative mRNA expression of OCN, Runx2, OSX, Sox9, Col2a1, RANKL, OPG was significantly increased in PHT treated group. Conclusions This study showed that PHT accelerates bone fracture healing through the activation of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. It was showed that PHT significantly promotes osteoblasts differentiation by osteoblast differentiation markers such as OCN, Runx2, Col1a2. Also it was investigated that PHT had stimulatory effect on osteoblasts function through enhancing OCN, Runx2, OSX, Sox9, Col2a1 and, osteoclasts function through enhancing RANKL and OPG markers. PHT effectively promotes bone fracture healing process through activation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

  • In designing a branch predictor, in addition to accuracy, microarchitects should consider power consumption, especially for embedded processors. This paper proposes a power-aware branch predictor, which is based on the gshare predictor, by accessing the BTB (Branch Target Buffer) only when the prediction from the PHT (Pattern History Table) is taken. To enable the selective access to the BTB, the PHT in the proposed branch predictor is accessed one cycle earlier than the traditional PHT to prevent the additional delay. As a side effect, two predictions from the PHT are obtained through one access to the PHT, which leads to more power savings. The proposed branch predictor reduces the power consumption, not requiring any additional storage arrays, not incurring additional delay (except just one MUX delay) and never harming accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed predictor reduces the power consumption by $35{\sim}48%$ compared to the traditional predictor.

Teratogenicity of phenytoin in ICR mouse and antiteratogenic effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (ICR마우스에서 phenytoin의 최기형성 및 dimethyl sulfoxide의 항최기형 효과)

  • Phenytoin(PHT), a commonly prescribed anticonvulsant, has been known as a teratogen in experimental animals and human. However, PHT has strain-specific teratogenic effects for mice and human. Dimethyl sulfoxids(DMSO) has been known to antagonize the teratogenic effects of secalonic acid D, a toxic mold metabolite that has similar teratogenic effects to PHT. Therefore, this study was performed to examine the embryopathic effects of PHT in terms of treatment period and the antiteratogenic effect of DMSO in ICR mice. PHT(75mg/kg, BW) was administered intrapetitoneally on day 10, 10-11 and 10-12 of gestation with or without DMSO(2ml/kg, BW), and the fetal malformation was observed on day 18. Major malformation of fetuses treated with PHT on day 10, 10-11 and 10-12 of gestation was cleft palate, and the percentages of fetus with cleft palate were 14.5%, 31.7% and 51.7%, respectively. Also, there was a significant decrease of cleft palate from 51.7% in PHT alone group to 30.8% in PHT plus DMSO group. Our findings suggest that cleft palate is one of major malformation by PHT treatment in ICR mouse and DMSO has strong antiteratogenic effect.

Effect of Post-Heat Treatment on Field Emission Properties for Carbon Nanotube Cathodes (탄소나노튜브 캐소드의 전계방출 특성에 미치는 재열처리의 영향)

  • For the application of field emission display (FED), it is essential to develop a carbon nanotube (CNT) cathode with high emission current density. In this study, we developed and demonstrated a post-heat treatment (PHT) process to improve field emission properties of CNT cathodes. Since the PHT is intended to burn out organic materials covering the CNTs, the PHT was carried out by heating samples at a high temperature in an atmosphere. The PHT process is applied for samples processed by surface treatment with an adhesive tape. Compared to samples prior to the PHT, samples after the PHT at $360^{\circ}C$ showed about 17% improvement in emission current density. The major reason for the increased current density is mainly the increased aspect ratio of the CNTs because of the removal of the adhesive organic residues covering the CNTs, which were attached on the CNT surfaces during the surface treatment using the adhesive taping method.

Influence of Clinically Significant Portal Hypertension on Hepatectomy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: a Meta-analysis

  • Background: Clinically significant portal hypertension (PHT) is considered as a contraindication for hepatectomy according to the guidelines of the European Association for Study of Liver and the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases. However, this issue remains controversial. Here we performed a metaanalysis to evaluate the impact of PHT on the results of hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: Cohort studies evaluating the impact of clinically significant PHT, defined as oesophageal varices and/or splenomegaly associated with thrombocytopenia, on the results of hepatectomy for HCC were identified using a predefined search strategy. Summary risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for PHT and outcomes after hepatectomy for HCC were calculated. Results: Seven cohort studies which including 574 cases with PHT and 1,354 cases without PHT were considered eligible for inclusion. The meta-analysis showed that, in all patients, pooled RRs of post-operative liver failure, post-operative ascites, peri-operative blood transfusion, operative mortality, 3- and 5-year overall survival associated with PHT were 2.23 (95% CI: 1.48-3.34, P=0.0001), 1.77 (95% CI: 1.19-2.64, P=0.005), 1.23 (95% CI: 1.03-1.49, P=0.03), 2.58 (95% CI: 1.12-5.96, P=0.03), 0.82 (95% CI: 0.75-0.88, P<0.00001) and 0.76 (95% CI: 0.69-0.85, P<0.00001), respectively. In subgroup analysis, similar results were found in Child-Pugh class A patients. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggests that presence of oesophageal varices and/or splenomegaly associated with thrombocytopenia is associated with higher rates of post-operative complications and poor long-term survival after hepatectomy for HCC.

Teratogenic Effects of Phenytoin on Rat Embryos in Culture (랫드에 있어서 배양배자에 대한 Phenytoin의 최기형성 효과)

  • The teratogenic potential of the anticonvulsant drug phenytoin (PHT) has been well documented both in the human and in the experimental animals. However there are few reports on the effects of PHT on embryonic development in rats in vitro. The present study was performed to evaluate the teratogenic effects of PHT using whole-embryo culture system in rats. Sprague-Dawley rat embryos were explanted on gestational day (GD) 9.5 and cultured for 48 hrs in the immediately centrifuged and heat-inactivated rat serum containing 0,25,50, or $100{\mu}g$ PHT/mL. At the end of culture period the embryos were scored for morphological development according to the procedure of Van Maele-Fabry, and their total protein contents were determined. At 100 ${\mu}$g/mL of culture medium. PHT caused significant reduction in developmental score and protein content of embryos and a high incidence morphological abnormalities (100%). Characteristic malformations included altered yolk and embryonic circulation, craniofacial hypoplasia, neural tube schisis, branchial arch defects, abnormal ratation, and limb bud hypoplasia, among others. There were no adverse effects on embryonic growth and development at concentrations of 25 and 50 ${\mu}$g /mL of culture medium. The results indicated that the dysmorphogenic effect of PHT on cultured embryos is due to a direct interference with embryonic development.

An Efficient Method for Real-Time Broken Lane Tracking Using PHT and Least-Square Method (PHT와 최소자승법을 이용한 효율적인 실시간 점선차선 추적)

  • A lane detection system is one of the major components of intelligent vehicle systems. Difficulties in lane detection mainly come from not only various weather conditions but also a variety of special environment. This paper describes a simple and stable method for the broken lane tracking in various environments. Probabilistic Hough Transform (PHT) and the Least-square method (LSM) are used to track and correct the lane orientation. For the efficiency of the proposed method, two regions of interest (ROIs) are placed in the lower part of each image, where lane marking areas usually appear with less intervention in our system view. By testing in both a set of static images and video sequences, the experiments showed that the proposed approach yielded robust and reliable results.

Effect of multiple-failure events on accident management strategy for CANDU-6 reactors

  • Lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident directed that multiple failures should be considered more seriously rather than single failure in the licensing bases and safety cases because attempts to take accident management measures could be unsuccessful under the high radiation environment aggravated by multiple failures, such as complete loss of electric power, uncontrollable loss of coolant inventory, failure of essential safety function recovery. In the case of the complete loss of electric power called station blackout (SBO), if there is no mitigation action for recovering safety functions, the reactor core would be overheated, and severe fuel damage could be anticipated due to the failure of the active heat sink. In such a transient condition at CANDU-6 plants, the seal failure of the primary heat transport (PHT) pumps can facilitate a consequent increase in the fuel sheath temperature and eventually lead to degradation of the fuel integrity. Therefore, it is necessary to specify the regulatory guidelines for multiple failures on a licensing basis so that licensees should prepare the accident management measures to prevent or mitigate accident conditions. In order to explore the efficiency of implementing accident management strategies for CANDU-6 plants, this study proposed a realistic accident analysis approach on the SBO transient with multiple-failure sequences such as seal failure of PHT pumps without operator's recovery actions. In this regard, a comparative study for two PHT pump seal failure modes with and without coolant seal leakage was conducted using a best-estimate code to precisely investigate the behaviors of thermal-hydraulic parameters during transient conditions. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis for different PHT pump seal leakage rates was also carried out to examine the effect of leakage rate on the system responses. This study is expected to provide the technical bases to the accident management strategy for unmitigated transient conditions with multiple failures.
