3개월 동안 사용한 마모된 칫솔의 마모 정도와 양상을 관찰하고, 새 칫솔과 마모된 칫솔의 잇솔질 전 ${\cdot}$ 후 치태제거효율을 single-use design으로 비교 ${\cdot}$ 평가하여 3개월 주기의 칫솔 교체 주기의 근거를 임상적으로 확인 해보고자 하였다. 치주적으로 건강한 치과 대학생 42명을 대상으로 설문지를 통해 잇솔질 습관을 조사하고, 3개월간 동일한 칫솔과 치약을 사용하게 하였다. 3개월 후 피시험자를 무작위로 두 군(I, II)으로 나누고, 치석제거술을 시행한 뒤 2주후에 내원하도록 하였으며 내원 전 48시간동안은 잇솔질을 하지 않도록 지시하였다. 2주후 I군은 새 칫솔을, II군은 마모된 칫솔을 사용하도록 하였으며 잇솔질 전 ${\cdot}$ 후에 각각 구강 내를 erythrosin으로 염색한 후 6개의 Ramfjord 치아의 plaque score를 Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) index로 측정하였다. 2주간의 washout period 후에 다시 치석제거술을 시행한 뒤, I군이 마모된 칫솔을, II군은 새 칫솔을 사용하게 하여 동일한 방법으로 PHP index를 각각 측정하였다. 마모된 칫솔은 수거하여 brushing surface area의 면적으로 마모도를 평가하였다. 결과는 paired t-test와 Pearson's correlation analysis로 통계처리 하였다. 2명이 탈락하였고 잇솔질 전 ${\cdot}$ 후에 대한 전체 부위, 치간 부위, 변연치은 부위의 plaque score는 두 칫솔 모두 통계학적으로 유의성 있게 감소하였으며 (p<0.0001), 두 칫솔을 비교한 경우에는 새 칫솔이 마모된 칫솔보다 치태 감소량이 통계학적으로 유의성 있게 많았다 (p<0.0001). 칫솔의 마모도는 평균 50.6% 증가하였으며, 마모도 증가에 따른 치태 감소량에는 직선적인 상관관계가 있었으나 통계학적인 유의성은 없었다. (전체 부위 r=-0.58, p=0.72 / 변연치은 부위 r=-0.50, p=0.76). Single-use design에서 3개월 동안 마모된 칫솔은 치태제거 능력에 있어서 새 칫솔보다 덜 효율적이였다. 칫솔의 마모도는 구강 위생 관리에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인이며, 마모된 칫솔은 정기적인 교체가 요구된다. 또한, 치간 부위를 포함한 변연치은 부위의 치태를 정확하게 평가할 수 있는 치태지수에 대한 연구가 필요하겠다.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic oral health education on the improvement of knowledge levels and patient hygiene performance(PHP) for elementary school students. The randomly selected 1st and 5th grade students in a public elementary school of Taegu city were divided by education group(118 students) and non-education group(122 students). The oral health education lesson was systematically held on the education group once a month for 4 months. The questionnaire queried all the subjects about their knowledge and attitudes before and after oral health education, and PHP was also tested at the same time. Corresponding p-values were significantly considered at values less than 0.05. The obtained results were as follows: Due to the oral health education lesson, the education group of both 1st and 5th grade students came to have a higher knowledge level than the non-education group. There was high improvement of items such as toothbrushing time, toothbrushing method, cause of dental caries, treatment after tooth damage, and tongue-brushing. Therefore, these items should be educated to all the elementary school students. By increaseing the knowledge level of oral health after education, the PHP index in the education group was significantly decreased in comparison to the non-education group and hence the capability of oral health management improved. From the above results, a systematically and periodically oral health education system for elementary school students can improve the knowledge level and capability of oral health management. Further study will be required to develop an easy and acceptable systemic oral health education program for elementary schools.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mouthwash containing sodium chloride on dental plaque, gingival inflammation index, and bad breath through clinical trials. Materials and Methods: This trial was designed as 12 weeks and subjects were instructed to put an appropriate amount of the provided standard detergent on a toothbrush and brush their teeth 3 times a day. They were instructed to gargle a mouthwash provided to each group after brushiung. Efficacy was evaluated by performing gingival and periodontal-related index tests, dental plaque changes, and bad breath tests a total of 5 times. All data were statistically analyzed using 2-sample t-test, paired t-test to compare between groups at 95% significance level using IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0. Results: As a result of the PMA index measurement, the gingivitis improvement effect rate of the experimental group compared to the control group was 107.63% after 8 weeks and 73.08% after 12 weeks. As a result of the PHP index measurement, the plaque improvement effect rate of the experimental group compared to the control group was 79.37% after 8 weeks and 74.06% after 12 weeks. As a result of measuring volatile sulfur compounds using Oral Chroma, the effectiveness of improvement in bad breath in the experimental group was 65.06% after 8 weeks and 99.33% after 12 weeks, compared to the control group. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was confirmed that effective gingivitis alleviation, plaque removal effect and bad breath removal effect can be expected when a mouthwash containing sodium chloride, green tea extract, and sodium monofluorophosphate is used.
The aim of the study was to observe the oral environment of smokers and to examine the importance and necessity of using oral care products for smokers. The questionnaires and experiments were conducted to 12 students of smokers and 12 of nonsmokers in Kangwon National University. The use of oral care products has been shown to improve the oral health of smokers overall and improve the oral environment. Providing training on oral hygiene products will help motivate smokers.
This study was conducted to induce changes in the correct oral hygiene management habits and attitudes of university students by grasping the relationship between oral hygiene status and of self-perception halitosis of university students, and to present basic data to improve oral health. The data survey was conducted on 322 university students under the age of 23 among the participants who visited the department of dental hygiene at K University in Daejeon for practice from September 23, 2019 to December 6, 2019. The degree of dental deposition was grade B, the patient hygiene performance index was 'normal' and the amount of tongue plaque was 'good' the highest, and the factors that were highly related to self-perception halitosis were the amount of tongue plaque and were dental deposits rating and grade. Also, oral hygiene status and self-perception halitosis were correlated with each other, and it was found that oral hygiene status had an important effect on self-perception halitosis. Therefore, it is necessary to actively develop interesting and practical oral health care programs and publicity plans so that the quality of life of oral health for university students can be improved.
Objectives : This study was to investigate the level of oral health, xerostomia, and oral health related activities of daily living(ADL) and the clinical factors influencing oral health related quality of life(OHIP-14) in elderly for visiting healthcare. Methods : Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 106 elderly people(mean age=$77.5{\pm}4.98$). Participants in the study were recruited when they attended the public health center in Cheonan-si. Data were collected by means of a personal interview from July 19 through to August 20, 2010. Oral health related ADL, OHIP-14 and dry mouth was measured by the total 24-items. The data was analysed with t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression using the SPSS program. Results : Participants had a mean of 13.6 remaining natural teeth, which was significantly with age and perceived oral health. Xerostomia score achieved a mean of 6.39 out of a maximum 12 points. Powerful predictors of OHIP-14 were natural teeth, masticatory difficulty, oral pain, PHP index, perceived oral health, age and living together for the elderly Conclusions : Based on the findings, OHIP-14 has a significantly impact on oral health related ADL. These results suggest that elder people oral health promotion should be developed assessment index which was measured predictors related oral health in the elderly for visiting healthcare.
The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of oral health promotion program in a group of 9~18-year-old children and adolescents living in four orphanages in Dong-gu, Daejeon. The program was based on oral disease prevention program including oral health education, fluoride application and scaling every six months. Oral health status of total 109 orphans was examined by one dentists who were trained in 2010 Korean National Oral Health Survey. Dental caries index, community periodontal index and modified patient hygiene performance index (M-PHP) were checked using dental unit chair. Child oral health impact profile (COHIP) and subjective oral health recognition survey were carried out. Compared with data of 2010 national sample, the mean of decayed, missing and filled teeth showed no difference between the subjects and test values, but the means of decayed teeth, decayed surface, toothbrushing frequency of the subjects showed to become worse with advancing years in spite of oral health promotion program. COHIP, subjective oral health status showed lower than test values, too. In M-PHP and Calculus index, the subjects showed better by periodic oral health education and scaling. We suggest that oral health promotion program for orphans include oral disease treatment program as well as preventive program to improve oral health of orphans efficiently. And, oral health promotion program has to be connected with psychological support for improving quality of life of orphans.

Objectives: This study was conducted at a request for cooperation through an analysis of the effect of toothbrushing facilities at a public health center in Seongdong-gu. Also, with the aim of furnishing basic data to the proposal of a program for improving the ability of school aged children in managing oral cavities and developing a correct toothbrushing habit, the study conducted an investigation of how toothbrushing facilities affect change in the oral environment management ability and behavior of oral health care. Methods: From among elementary schools located in Seongdong-gu, Seoul the study selected A Elementary School where toothbrushing facilities were established and have been operated since 2008, B Elementary School in an adjacent region within the jurisdiction of Seongdong-gu where the demographic environment was similar among schools where toothbrushing facilities were newly established in 2012, and C Elementary School without toothbrushing facilities. Then the study was aimed at first grade students of the schools and an investigation was carried out from April to December 2012. Through a dental checkup, the study evaluated the teeth and periodontal health conditions, and a test of the oral environment management ability was undertaken three times. Regarding change of oral health care behavior, the study carried out a self-recording survey. Results: 1. Concerning decayed and filled tooth(dft) and decayed and filled surface (dfs), A Elementary School where toothbrushing facilities have been established and operated from the past showed a relatively lower decayed, missing, and filled teeth index than B Elementary School where toothbrushing facilities were established in 2012 or C Elementary School without toothbrushing facilities; however, there was no significant difference (p>0.05). For CPI, there was no significant difference by school; however, in looking into the difference between boy students and girl students, Code (0) was discovered higher in boy students whereas Code (1) was shown higher in girl students. 2. In the PHP index test in accordance with the existence of toothbrushing facilities before the installation of toothbrushing facilities, for A Elementary School where toothbrushing facilities have been established and operated from the past, the school recorded 4.28 points whereas B Elementary School where the facilities were established in 2012 recorded 3.51 points. Meanwhile C Elementary School without the facilities posted 4.30 points. Therefore there was a statistically significant difference according to the existence of toothbrushing facilities (p<0.05). 3. In a comparison of teeth health care behavior according to the existence of toothbrushing facilities, the number of answers that the respondent did not brush their teeth after lunch over the past one week was higher in B Elementary School and C Elementary School where there were no toothbrushing facilities. Regarding the average number of brushing after lunch for one week, it was discovered higher in A Elementary School (p<0.01). 4. In change of teeth health care behavior before and after the establishment of toothbrushing facilities, the case of answering that the respondents did not brush their teeth after lunch for one week increased more after establishment than before establishment. Also the average number of teeth brushings after lunch for one week decreased further after the establishment of toothbrushing facilities; however, it did not show a significant difference (p>0.05). One of the reasons that they do not brush their teeth, "the lack of a place", decreased significantly after establishment than before establishment (p<0.05), whereas the answer, "because their friends do not brush their tooth" increased greatly after establishment than before establishment; however, there was no significant difference (p>0.05). 5. In the comparison of the degree of knowledge about dental health according to the existence of toothbrushing facilities, the degree of knowledge about dental health was shown significantly higher in A Elementary School with toothbrushing facilities than in B Elementary School and C Elementary School where there were no toothbrushing facilities (p<0.01). Conclusions: Given the above results, it is difficult to attract change in behavior only with an environmental improvement; therefore, it is deemed necessary to develop an educational program that will help children to make a habit of oral health care not only through a school but also through a related policy and financial support of government organizations as well as the construction of the basis of a systematic and consistent cooperative system with relevant organizations.

This study aimed to compare the elimination effect of dental plaque between general toothbrushes and chewing toothbrushes, so as to investigate whether the chewing toothbrushes have the practicality as the alternatives of general toothbrushes and their utilities in the real life. The study subjects were 30 healthy adults in their 20s who maintained the good dental condition over 16 teeth without systemic diseases, and the decline rates of dental plaque index after usages of general and chewing toothbrushes were calculated. Upon the comparisons of dental plaque decline rates before and after the usages of general and chewing toothbrushes, PHI index was declined from 7.02 to 1.91 in case of the general toothbrush demonstrating dental plaque decline by 72.79%, while it was declined from 6.72 to 4.08 in the chewing toothbrush demonstrating decline by 39.29%. Currently, a variety of dental care items are available in the Korean market, hence, various studies are required on the dental care items so as for the people to properly choose the items.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of community oral hygiene program on oral hygiene practice behavior in children. Methods: Oral hygiene promotion program was performed in 23 community child centers in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggido. The study analyzed the effect of community oral hygiene promotion programs on the oral hygiene practice behavior in children from September to December, 2014. The trained dental hygienists in 23 public health centers and dental hygiene students participated in the oral hygiene promotion program for oral health examination and education for the children. The contents of the program was standardized and instructed to the team members. The individual improvement in children oral hygiene practice was assessed using PHP(patient hygiene performance) index score. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: After the program, children who stopped eating confectioneries and those eating once a day increased to 32.12% and 14.24%, respectively. Those eating more than four times a day were still high(32.44%), but it was a lower rate than before the program (p<0.001). The rate of toothbrushing of more than 2 to 3 times a day was 82.75% and it was higher than before the education (p<0.001). The knowledge level of children increased from 18.83% to 66.30%. The oral hygiene practice performance in children was highly improved. Conclusions: The four months duration of oral hygiene program remarkably improved the oral hygiene practice in the children. So the community health centers and welfare centers must cooperate and improve the children oral health promotion by developing the oral health promotion program.
