Effects of the Method of FTSs on the Performance of HPAs (FTS 방식이 전력증폭기의 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • It is necessary to develop the next generation FTS which is suitable for our environment and effectively operates many launch vehicles. Standard tone, Secure tone, MHA, EFTS and DSSS are studied for the next generation FTS. FTS requires a high quality of performance and reliability because of their specific mission. And few FTSs are needed but the price is very expensive. Therefore we must investigate a part of the FTS whether the part can be reused for a part of the next FTS. In this paper, we use CCDF of the transmitted signal from FTS as the method to study a possibility of reusing HPA used in the present system. The simulation results show that PEP of Standard tone is 0.21dB and Secure tone and MHA has the same PEP. CPFSK's PEP is 1.81dB and PEP of DSSS using BPSK modulation is 2.6dB.

Adaptive Congestion Control Scheme of TCP for Supporting ACM in Satellite PEP System (위성 PEP시스템에서 ACM 지원을 위한 적응형 TCP 혼잡제어기법)

  • Currently satellite communication systems usually use the ACM(Adaptive Coding and Modulation) to extend the link availability and to increase the bandwidth efficiency. However, when ACM system is used for satellite communications, we should carefully consider TCP congestion control to avoid network congestions. Because MODCODs in ACM are changed to make a packet more robust according to satellite wireless link conditions, bandwidth of satellite forward link is also changed. Whereas TCP has a severe problem to control the congestion window for the changed bandwidth, then packet overflow can be experienced at MAC or PHY interface buffers. This is a reason that TCP in transport layer does not recognize a change of bandwidth capability form MAC or PHY layer. To overcome this problem, we propose the adaptive congestion control scheme of TCP for supporting ACM in Satellite PEP (Performance Enhancing Proxy) systems. Simulation results by using ns-2 show that our proposed scheme can be efficiently adapted to the changed bandwidth and TCP congestion window size, and can be useful to improve TCP performance.

In Vivo Protein Transduction: Delivery of PEP-1-SOD1 Fusion Protein into Myocardium Efficiently Protects against Ischemic Insult

  • Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury is a medical problem occurring as damage to the myocardium following blood flow restoration after a critical period of coronary occlusion. Oxygen free radicals (OFR) are implicated in reperfusion injury after myocardial ischemia. The antioxidant enzyme, Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-SOD, also called SOD1) is one of the major means by which cells counteract the deleterious effects of OFR after ischemia. Recently, we reported that a PEP-1-SOD1 fusion protein was efficiently delivered into cultured cells and isolated rat hearts with ischemia-reperfusion injury. In the present study, we investigated the protective effects of the PEP-1-SOD1 fusion protein after ischemic insult. Immunofluorescecnce analysis revealed that the expressed and purified PEP-1-SOD1 fusion protein injected into rat tail veins was efficiently transduced into the myocardium with its native protein structure intact. When injected into Sprague-Dawley rat tail veins, the PEP-1-SOD1 fusion protein significantly attenuated myocardial ischemia-reperfusion damage; characterized by improving cardiac function of the left ventricle, decreasing infarct size, reducing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), decreasing the release of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and relieving cardiomyocyte apoptosis. These results suggest that the biologically active intact forms of PEP-1-SOD1 fusion protein will provide an efficient strategy for therapeutic delivery in various diseases related to SOD1 or to OFR.

Performance Evaluation of PEP Based on Cross-Layer in Satellite Communication System (위성 통신에서 Cross-layer 기반 PEP 성능 평가)

  • Satellite communication is a wide area network (WAN) which provides communication service worldwide. However, the performance of TCP can be seriously degraded in the satellite networks due to limited bandwidth, long round-trip time (RTT) and high bit error rate (BER) over satellite links. In order to improve the performance of TCP, this paper proposes cross-layer Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) in digital video broadcasting-return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS) networks. The proposed protocol sets TCP Congestion Window (CWND) size by using satellite resource allocation information exchanged between TCP and the link-layer. we implement PEP testbed based on Linux to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol performs better than standard TCP both in single and multiple sessions in variant BER, because the proposed protocol sets TCP CWND size by using satellite resource allocation.

Isolation and Characterization of Pepper mottle virus Infecting Tomato in Korea

  • A peculiar virus-like disease of tomato showing yellow mosaic and necrotic spots on leaves and necrosis on veins, petioles and stems was observed at the Tomato Experimental Station (TES), Buyeo, Chungcheongnamdo, Korea. The disease incidence at TES fields ranged from 21 to 35% infecting different tomato cultivars. For this reason, to identify the virus infecting tomato and to characterize the virus based on biology, serology, cytology and at molecular level. Here, leaf samples were randomly collected from different infected tomato cultivars at TES fields and greenhouses and tested by ELISA using Pepper mottle virus (PePMoV) and Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) antisera. Infected saps were mechanically inoculated in different host plants to test for pathogenicity, symptomatology and host ranges. Infected tissues and ultrathin sections were examined by electron microscopy. Finally, putative coat protein and 3'-untranslated region (CP/3'-UTR) fragment was amplified and cloned for sequence determination and analyzed its genetic relationship to existing PepMoV and PVY sequences at the Genbank. Results showed 69% of the samples were positive with PepMoV, 13% with ToMV and 19 % were doubly infected with PepMoV and ToMV. Symptoms greatly varied from different host plants inoculated with tomato leaf sap infected with PepMoV alone and discussed in detailed in this paper. Electron microscopy from infected tissues showed filamentous particles of 720-750nm in length, a typical morphology and size of PepMoV. In addition, cylindrical inclusion bodies, pinwheels, scrolls and laminates with masses of fibrillar inclusions were also found in ultrathin sections. Alignment of the sequences of the CP/3'-UTR revealed >96% sequence identity with PepMoV and only <61% with PVY. Taken together, all these evidences presented clearly indicated that the causal agent infecting tomato at TES was PepMoV and we designated this PepMoV infecting tomato as Tom-sd2 strain in this study.

  • Botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) has been used therapeutically to treat muscular hypercontractions and sudomotor hyperactivity and it has been reported that BoNT/A might have analgesic properties in headache. PEP-1 peptide is a known carrier peptide that delivers fulll-ength native proteins in vitro and in vivo. In this study, a BoNT/A gene were fused with PEP-1 peptide in a bacterial expression vector to produce a genetic in-frame PEP-1-BoNT/A fusion protein. The expressed and purified PEP-1-BoNT/A fusion proteins were efficiently transduced into cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner when added exogenously in a culture medium. In addition, immuno-histochemical analysis revealed that PEP-1-BoNT/A fusion protein efficiently penetrated into the epidermis as well as the dermis of the subcutaneous layer, when sprayed on mice skin. These results suggest that PEP-1-BoNT/A fusion protein provide an efficient strategy for therapeutic delivery in various human diseases related to this protein.

Levosulpiride, (S)-(-)-5-Aminosulfonyl-N-[(1-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinyl) methyl]-2-methoxybenzamide, enhances the transduction efficiency of PEP-1-ribosomal protein S3 in vitro and in vivo

  • Many proteins with poor transduction efficiency were reported to be delivered to cells by fusion with protein transduction domains (PTDs). In this study, we investigated the effect of levosulpiride on the transduction of PEP-1 ribosomal protein S3 (PEP-1-rpS3), and examined its influence on the stimulation of the therapeutic properties of PEP-1-rpS3. PEP-1-rpS3 transduction into HaCaT human keratinocytes and mouse skin was stimulated by levosulpiride in a manner that did not directly affect the cell viability. Following 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice, levosulpiride alone was ineffective in reducing TPA-induced edema and in inhibiting the elevated productions of inflammatory mediators and cytokines, such as cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin-6 and -1${\beta}$, and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$. Anti-inflammatory activity by PEP-1-rpS3 + levosulpiride was significantly more potent than by PEP-1-rpS3 alone. These results suggest that levosulpiride may be useful for enhancing the therapeutic effect of PEP-1-rpS3 against various inflammatory diseases.

Effect of Dietary Protein Levels, Caffeine and Green Tea on Body Fat Deposition in Wistar Rats (Wistar Rat에 있어서 체지방 축적에 미치는 식이단백질 수준, 카페인 및 녹차의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of dietary protein levels(5% and 15% PEP), caffeine or green tea powder on body fat deposition in rats. Male weanling Wistar rats weighting the average of 90g were allotted into 6 experimental groups, each of which was fed two different levels of dietary protein with or without caffeine or green tea powder(5p+0.15% caffeine ; 5p+6.1% green tea powder ; 15p+0.15% caffeine ; 15p+6.1% green tea powder) during 8 weeks of the experimental period. Caffeine and green tea powder were supplemented at the levels of 0.15% and 6.1% of experimental diets. The rats fed 5% PEP diet which had received caffeine or green tea powder showed significantly(p<0.01) reduced gain in body weight. The food efficiency of which rats fed both 5% and 15% PEP diet supplemented with 6.1% green tea powder was significantly low(p<0.05, respectively) compared with the control group. Rats fed diets containing 0.15% caffeine and 6.1% green tea powder showed the significant reduction(p<0.01) of hite adipose tissue weight, triglycerides levels of liver and plasma. The addition of 0.15% caffeine or 6.1% green tea powder to 5% PEP diet resulted in significantly(p<0.01) higher levels of plasma total cholesterol, free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, but HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly(p<0.01, in 5% PEP group) high. The atherogenic index(Tchol-HDLchol/HDLchol) in rats fed 6.1% green tea powder diets decreased especially compared with the control group.

Enhancing File Transmission Speed in Satellite Communication Using Exclusive-OR TCP Coding Technic and Split PEP (Split PEP와 Exclusive-OR TCP 코딩 기법을 이용한 위성통신 파일 전송 속도 향상)

  • In this paper, we propose a exclusive-OR TCP coding technic imply with TCP Hybla on split PEP for enhancing the file transfer speed of the satellite communication. To evaluate performance of the proposed method, we set up a test-bed of satellite communication network. As a result of the performance evaluation, the file transmission speed enhanced more than 12% within high packet loss range. Therefore, we can expect that the proposed methodology could contribute to enhancing of data transmission speed in the satellite communication.
