Feeding Acacia saligna to Sheep and Goats with or without the Addition of Urea or Polyethylene Glycol

  • The objective of the research was to investigate the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or urea supplementation in sheep and goats fed a basal diet of Acacia saligna and wheat straw. The 3 dietary treatments were: (1) Control: ad libitum A. saligna+ 400 g/d wheat straw (95% DM) (basal diet); (2) Basal diet+50 g/d PEG 4000; and (3) Basal diet+1% (on a DM basis) urea sprayed onto the straw and A. saligna 30 min prior to feeding. All animals maintained live weight, regardless of the dietary treatment. All sheep readily consumed the A. saligna in preference to straw. In sheep both DMD and OMD were higher (p<0.05) where PEG was included in the diet compared to the other two treatments. Contrary to findings by other researchers there was no significant difference in DMI, DMD or OMD between sheep and goats in corresponding treatment groups. All animals were in positive N balance. For both sheep and goats, rumen ammonia concentrations were increased with the use of either urea or PEG. In these groups the maximum ammonia concentrations exceeded 50 mg/L, considered the minimum required to maximise microbial growth. This threshold, however, was exceeded only for a period of 8-11 h. Of those measured, rumen ammonia levels were generally the highest at 4 h post feeding. None of the measurements of rumen ammonia for the control group approached 50 mg/L. It is unclear how and why feed intake and live weight were maintained when rumen ammonia levels were often sub-optimal.

  • This study was conducted to identify the enzyme treatment time, enzyme concentration and plant growth condition for isolation of potato mesopyll, it was also performed to determine the adquate sucrose molarity on purification of protoplasts and to investigate the incubation time, PEG concentration and DMSO effect for potato-petunia protoplast fusion. The results were summarized as follows: The optimal time of incubation in enzyme solution was 3 - 4 hours and high humidity and low light intensity made plants more effective to protoplast releasing enzymes. Our experimental results showed that the pectolyase Y-23 was an ideal agent for isolation from mesophyll cultured in vitro compared with macerozyme. The enzyme solution with 0.5 % macerozyme and 2 % cellulase was very effective and the purity of healthy protoplast was better in 0.4 and 0.5 M sucrose than in others. It was revealed that the rate of potato-petunia fusion according to the incubation time with PEG was effective at 30 min incubation and percentage of protoplast aggregation was increased by high molecular weight and concentration of PEG. Percentage of potato-petunia protoplast heteroplasmic aggregation was increased by 4 to 16 % in PEG 6000 compared with PEG 4000 and PEG 1500. Addition of 5 to 10 % DMSO to the PEG solution increased to the heteroplasmic aggregation of potato-petunia from 2 to 4 %.

Hydrogenation of Methyl Dodecanoate Using Copper Chromite (분산액에서의 Copper Chromite 합성 및 Methyl Dodecanoate의 수소화반응)

  • The hydrogenation reaction of methyl dodecanoate for the synthesis of 1-dodecanol has been carried out in the presence of a copper chromite catalyst. The catalysts were synthesized by ceramic method, co-precipitation, and improved co-precipitation method and the particles were characterized by SEM and XRD. Also, the products of the reaction were assigned by GC, GC/MSD and NMR. The particles synthesized by each method showed (1) a spherical shape with the size of 3.2 to $7.0{\mu}m$, (2) an agglomerated spherical shape with the size of 50 to 500 nm and (3) a spherical shape with smaller particle size, respectively. Especially, in order to control the size of particles, the particles were synthesized in various dispersant solutions as Span 80, polyacrylate, and polyethyleneglycols (PEGs). The particles synthesized in PEG (Mw = 4000) solution showed the smallest particle size of 30 to 50 nm and the regularity of the particle size distribution. Our experimental results elucidated that the activity of catalyst for hydrogenation increases with decreasing the size of catalyst particle. The highest yield of dodecanol in the hydrogenation reaction was 95.5% when copper chromite synthesized in the PEG solution was used as a catalyst in the optimized reaction condition.

Mechanistic Studies of Ketoprofen Absorption in Perfused Rat Intestine Model (관류 랫드 장관모델에서의 케토프로펜의 흡수기전 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the absorption properties of ketoprofen. The in-situ perfusion model has advantages over in vitro models as it provides intact lymphatic and blood flow circulation. The absorption properties of six different concentrations of ketoprofen have been studied in single pass in-situ rat intestine model. $^{14}C-PEG$ 4000 was used as a permeability marker and the possibility of an energy dependent contribution to ketoprofen absorption was also Investigated using the metabolic inhibitor sodium azide. Three different concentrations of sodium azide were studied to examine its effect on absorption of ketoprofen from the rat intestine. The findings of this study suggest that mono-carboxylic type drugs like ketoprofen cause permeability changes in the intestine. This is shown by the increase in absorption of $^{14}C-PEG$ 4000 as the concentration of ketoprofen is increased. However, the trend for ketoprofen permeability is to decrease over the concentration ranges. It was observed that the Papp values for ketoprofen with sodium azide shows a trend towards reduction in the amount of ketoprofen absorbed from the rat intestine which was significantly different (p<0.05) from that of ketoprofen with sodium azide 3.0mM. This indicates that sodium azide has an affect on the absorption of ketoprofen. The pH of all the perfusion solutions was altered to ${\sim}pH\;6.7$ by the buffering capacity of the small intestine secretions. The results suggest that mechanisms other than passive diffusion may be involved in ketoprofen absorption. This would be consistent with the involvement of active transport or saturatable processes in the absorption of drugs containing monocarboxylic acid group, as has been previously suggested from in vitro data.

Conservation Treatment and Degradation Patterns of Woods Excavated from Daho-ri (다호리출토(茶戶里出土) 목재(木材)의 분해상태(分解狀態)와 보존처리(保存處理))

  • 24 wooden objects excavated from Daho-ri were identified into 8 categories such as Quercus spp. (37.7%), Castanea crenata (8.3%), Prunus (8.3%), Ilex (4.1%), Alnus spp. (25%), Prunus spp. (4.1%), Zelkova serrata (4.1%) and Fraxinuse (8.3%). Physical properties of the above high water content, high contraction rate and significant density reduction. As for degradation pattern, observation with polarizing microscope showed significant decrease of double reflection phenomenon in most of the excavated objects excluding vessel compared to other kinds of objects, and observation with SEM showed remarkable degradation of organization structure including the 2nd cell wall of wood. Reagent can be easily penetrated and diffused into the objects with high degradation rate, so it's beneficial to treat them with polymers such as PEG#4000(MW:3,350), but in order to prevent contraction and change in shape, high concentration of Reagent is required in treatment to hold wood organization structure.

Clinical Features of Severely Constipated Children: Comparison of Infrequent Bowel Movement and Fecal Soiling Groups

  • Purpose: To compare the clinical features, diagnostic findings, and medications of children with infrequent bowel movements or fecal soiling. Methods: This study enrolled 333 children (189 male; age range, 1 month to 18 years) diagnosed with functional constipation by Rome III or IV criteria. We classified them into 3 groups (infrequent bowel movement without fecal soiling [G3-a], infrequent bowel movement with fecal soiling [G3-b], and fecal soiling only [G3-c]) and into 2 subgroups of fecal soiling (G2-b) or not (G2-a). Retrospective data on clinical characteristics, colon transit time (CTT) test results, and medications were collected. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Chi-square test, and Fisher's exact test were used for the statistical analysis. Results: The median age (months) and interquartile range (IQR) was 33 (45) in G3-a, 54 (40) in G3-b, and 73 (48) in G3-c (p<0.0001). G3-c had the latest onset (median, 18; IQR, 18; p=0.0219) and longest symptom duration (24 [24], p=0.0148). PEG 4000 was used in 60.6% (G3-a), 96.8% (G3-b), and 83.2% (G3-c) of patients (p<0.0001). The median age (months) and IQR were 33.0 (45.0) in G2-a and 63.5 (52.5) in G2-b (p<0.0001). G2-b had later onset (median, 12; IQR, 19.5; p=0.0062) and longer symptom duration than G2-a (24 [12], p=0.0070). PEG 4000 was used in 60.6% (G2-a) and 88.3% (G2-b) of children (p<0.0001). No statistically significant intergroup differences were seen in maintenance laxative dose, CTT, or CTT type. Conclusion: Infrequent bowel movement and fecal soiling represent the advanced stage of chronic functional constipation.

Conservation for Wooden Objects and Lacquer Wares Excavated From Sinchang-dong, Gwangju (광주 신창동 저습지 유적 목제 및 칠기의 보존)

  • From the low swamp remains in Sinchang-dong, Gwangju, a number of wooden lacquerware along with various wooden artifacts were excavated. These excavated lacquerware have deteriorated and weak wooden parts and the lacquer layer come off from the wooden parts; they are very likely to peel off and crack. Therefore, we impregnated the lacquerware in PEG#4000 40% solution that was effective for vacuum freeze drying and finished freeze-drying below 0°…. We compared the weight of wood and lacquerware right after the freeze-drying with the weight after leaving them in a airtight space with 60% RH (relative humidity). The comparison results showed no change in weight; thereby we confirmed controlling the finishing temperature during freeze-drying could control the moisture in wood after drying and it could stabilize wood against the change in moisture in the atmosphere. according to the analysis of the lacquer fragment, the base layer was pasted on the wooden surface with mixed black pigment and the upper layer was pasted three or four times with the mixture of lacquer and black pigment; or it was pasted without the black base coating.

Studies on the Restoration of Ancient Bridge Setakarahashi -Conservation and Display for Large Size Waterlogged Wood- (고대 세다당교의 보존처리 - 대형출토목재의 보존과 전시 -)

  • This paper deals with the restoration of ancient wooden bridge foundation which excavated in Seta river Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Shiga Archeological Research started a marine archeological investigation of the bridge foundation in 1987. The bridge foundation stricture excavated and have since then recovered about a lots of woods and another materials. The bridge foundation structure constructed log, timbers and stones. The species of those waterlogged wood were identified as two types, hardwood and softwood. Hardwood(log : Cyclobalanopsis) was used for below foundation and softwood (timber' Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl. Cupreessaceae) was used for base structure. One of those timber sample dated by dendrochronology, we asked Dr. Misutani*. The softwood gave a felling date of 567 A.D. In result, the ancient Seta bridge foundation structure had constructed between Asuka and Nara period. We healed the news that ancient bridge foundation excavated at Woljyongyo site in Kyongju, Korea 1987. The bridge foundation Setakarahashi is similar in plane and structure to Woljyongyo structures. The Woljyongyo site report had be of value for reference. We had planning to restore those woods. Hardwood log was got serious damage. The water content varies from 400 to $600\%$. The other timbers water content varies about $200\%$. In the Shiga Center for Archaeological Operations and the Azuchi Castle Archaeological Museum, we set up the PEG impregnation tank. Those wooden objects treated by PEG method. PEG with a molecular weight of 4000. The treatment results may be considered satisfactory. The ancient wooden Seta bridge was reconstructed in Biwako Museum which established in Oct. 1996. We must take care of indoor exhibition environments.   • 경산 임당유적에서 출토된 목제 갑옷틀은 수침된 상태로 출토된 목제유물로 재질이 매우 취약하여, 대기 중에 노출되면 급속도로 건조가 진행되어 곧바로 수축 변형이 일어나 유물로써 가치를 잃어버리게 된다. 특히 목제 갑옷틀은 오랜 매장기간동안 목질부의 분해가 많이 진행되어 재질이 취약할 뿐 아니라 원통목을 가공한 것이어서 건조 과정에서 수축변형이 발생우려가 높다. 따라서 목제 갑옷틀은 건조변형이 적고 치수안정화가 우수한 처리법을 적용하여야 한다. 따라서 목제 갑옷틀은 t-butanol 용액을 용제로 PEG#4000 40%로 함침 전처리 후 진공 동결건조법으로 보존처리 하였다.

Effects of Inorganic Additives on Electroless Copper Plation Bath for PCB (무기 첨가제에 대한 PCB제조용 무전해 동도금액의 영향)

  • 무전해 동도금액에서의 각종 안정제, 촉진제등의 첨가제에 따른 영향을 고찰하였다. 욕의 기본성분은 황산구리 10g/1, EDTA-2Na 40g/1, 포르말린 3ml/1, pH조절용 수산화나트륨 용액으로 조성하였고, 안정제, 도금촉진제 및 계면활성제의 첨가에 따른 분극곡선을 검토하여 도금욕의 경향을 검토한뒤 농도변화에 따른 도금속도를 측정하여 최적조건을 구하였다. 안정제는 $\alpha$, $\alpha$'-dipyridy1과 NaSCN을 혼합 사용하는 것이 좋았으며 촉진제로는 pyridine이 계면활성제로는 PEG 4000이 좋았다. 첨가량은 5mg/1이하의 미량이었으며 이후 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 증가함에 따라 도금속도는 직선적으로 감소하였다.
