  • Shadows are important elements for realistic rendering of the 3D scene. Image based methods which are techniques to generate shadows are widely used because of fast calculation time. However, this algorithm has aliasing problems. PCF is a method to solve the aliasing problem. Using PCF technique, antialiased shadow boundary can be generated. However, PCF with large filter size requires more time to calculate antialiased shadow boundary. This paper introduces an improved PCF technique which generates antialiased shadow boundary similar to that of PCF. Compared with PCF, this technique can generate antialiased shadows in less time.

  • In IEEE 802.11b, Medium Access Control Sublayer consists of DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). DCF provides contention based services and PCF provides contention free services for QoS satisfaction. DCF uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) as an access protocol. And PCF uses Polling Scheme. In this paper, a modified New-PCF, which gives weights to channels with heavier traffic load, was suggested. NS-2 simulations were conducted to compare the service performances with original DCF, PCF and the modified New-PCF respectively. Simulation results has shown the increased overall throughput with the proposed New-PCF compared with other cases.

  • Shadows are important elements for realistic rendering of the 3D scene. We cannot recognize the distance of objects in the 3D scene without shadows. Two methods, image-based medthods and object-based methods, are largely used for the rendering of shadows. Object based methods can generate accurate shadow boundaries. However, it cannot be used to generate the realtime shadows because the time complexity defends on the complexity of the 3D scene. Image based methods which are techniques to generate shadows are widely used because of fast calculation time. However, this algorithm has aliasing problems. PCF is a method to solve the aliasing problem. Using PCF technique, antialiased shadow boundaries can be generated. However, PCF with large filter size requires more time to calculate antialiased shadow boundaries. This paper proposes an improved PCF technique which generates antialiased shadow boundaries similar to that of PCF. Compared with PCF, this technique can generate antialiased shadows in less time.

  • A PCF(Pore Controllable Fiber Filter) process was applied as a pretreatment of water treatment for reduction of turbidity. The experimental results obtained from the PCF showed that the removal efficiency of turbidity without coagulation was around over 70 percent. However, the removal efficiency of turbidity by the coagulation-PCF process was high as much as over 95%. Thus, the coagulation pretreatment was required for the better operation of the PCF. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images of fiber before and after filtration showed that the filtration mechanism of PCF filter is both controlling attachment mechanism and Sieving mechanism through fiber pore. For the coagulation-PCF process, optimum dosage of coagulant was needed for the economical operation, and for this, determining the optimum dosage by using a filter column test. Also only 16mg/L of alum was used to obtain high algae removal efficiency over 90%. Therefore, it can be concluded that coagulation-PCF process is very effective pretreatment process for algae removal.

  • The success of the IEEE 802.11 standard has prompted research into efficiency of the different medium access methods and their support for different traffic types. A modified version of the point coordination function (PCF) called modified PCF has been introduced as a way to improve the efficiency over the standard method. It has been shown through a simulation study and a mathematical analysis that channel utilization can be much improved compared to the standard, in case there is no so-called hidden station problem. However, under the hidden station problem, the efficiency of the modified PCF would obviously decrease. In this paper, some enhancements of the modified PCF are introduced. Firstly, we propose a retransmission process to allow frames involved in collisions to be retransmitted. Then, we propose a collision resolution mechanism to reduce the frame collision probability due to the hidden station problem. In addition, we propose a priority scheme to support prioritization for different traffic types such as interactive voice and video, and real-time data traffic in the modified PCF. To prevent the starvation of one low priority traffic, minimum transmission period is also guaranteed to each traffic type via an admission control algorithm. We study the performance of the modified PCF under the hidden station problem and the performance of the modified PCF with priority scheme through simulations. To illustrate the efficiency of the priority scheme, we therefore compare its simulation results with those of some standardized protocols: The distributed coordination function (DCF), the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA), the PCF, and our previously proposed protocol: The modified PCF without priority scheme. The simulation results show that the increment of delay in the network due to the hidden station problem can be reduced using the proposed collision resolution mechanism. In addition, in a given scenario the modified PCF with priority scheme can provide better quality of service (QoS) support to different traffic types and also support a higher number of data stations than the previous proposals.

  • The product-level carbon footprint (PCF) is a comprehensive and widely accepted metric for sustainable product development. However, since a full PCF study in general is time and cost intensive, it is not feasible for the product development team to synchronize the activity to the main product development process. In addition, the current dedicated life cycle assessment (LCA) tools for calculating PCF, separated from the main product data management systems, have limitations to provide timely PCF information for design decision makings and collaborations between design and environment engineers. This paper examines the possibility of the extension of the current product data model that can support the PCF calculation with PDM (Product Data Management) databases. The product data model can represent not only the content of products but also context or system information of the products. The product data model can be implemented as a PDM database that can satisfy the needs for handy and timely PCF calculations from the consistent product data for dynamic design decision makings and engineering collaborations.

  • In the IEEE 802.1 Ib, DCF provides contention based services and PCF provides contention free services for QoS suppof. DCF uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/collision Avoidance) as an access protocol. In this paper, an enhanced PCF, which gives weights to channels with heavy traffic load, was proposed. The weight is depending on the partial queue length information from STAs. NS-2 simulation results show that the proposed scheme is an promising approach for enhancing the PCF.

  • It was evaluated that the effect of turbidity removal by Pore Controllable Fiber Filter(PCF) installed in NS(Naksang) small water treatmant plant(system) using under flow water as raw water in the study. The results of the study are as the followings. Firstly, the removal efficiency of turbidity by PCF without coagulation(in operation mode not using coagulants) was mostly below 20 percent. On the other hand, when operation using proper coagulants, that of turbidity was mostly over 80 percent. Secondly, slow sand filtration after PCF, total turbidity removal efficiency of final treated water was 84.3 percent, and the contribution by PCF was 57.1 percent and that of slow sand filtration was 27.7 percent. Therefore the introduction of PCF as pre-treatment process would be helpful to reduce the loading of high turbidity of slow sand filtration. Thirdly, the results of particle counter measurements showed that when operated PCF with coagulants, fine flocs captured or adsorbed at the pore of PCF were flow out into the effluents from 120 minutes after backwashing because of the increase of headloss of PCF. Therefore the decision of backwashing time should made consideration into the outflow of fine flocs from PCF. Fourth, coagulant dosages on PCF at the same turbidity was largely variable because of the effect of the raw water characteristics and the turbidity increase velocity at rainy days, therefore flexible coagulant dosages should be considered rather than fixed coagulant dosage by the influent jar-test result.

  • In this work, we report detailed numerical analysis of the near-elliptic core index-guiding triangular-lattice and square-lattice photonic crystal fiber (PCFs); where we numerically characterize the birefringence, single mode, cut-off behavior and group velocity dispersion and effective area properties. By varying geometry and examining the modal field profile we find that for the same relative values of $d/{\Lambda}$, triangular-lattice PCFs show higher birefringence whereas the square-lattice PCFs show a wider range of single-mode operation. Square-lattice PCF was found to be endlessly single-mode for higher air-filling fraction ($d/{\Lambda}$). Dispersion comparison between the two structures reveal that we need smaller lengths of triangular-lattice PCF for dispersion compensation whereas PCFs with square-lattice with nearer relative dispersion slope (RDS) can better compensate the broadband dispersion. Square-lattice PCFs show zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) red-shifted, making it preferable for mid-IR supercontinuum generation (SCG) with highly non-linear chalcogenide material. Square-lattice PCFs show higher dispersion slope that leads to compression of the broadband, thus accumulating more power in the pulse. On the other hand, triangular-lattice PCF with flat dispersion profile can generate broader SCG. Square-lattice PCF with low Group Velocity Dispersion (GVD) at the anomalous dispersion corresponds to higher dispersion length ($L_D$) and higher degree of solitonic interaction. The effective area of square-lattice PCF is always greater than its triangular-lattice counterpart making it better suited for high power applications. We have also performed a comparison of the dispersion properties of between the symmetric-core and asymmetric-core triangular-lattice PCF. While we need smaller length of symmetric-core PCF for dispersion compensation, broadband dispersion compensation can be performed with asymmetric-core PCF. Mid-Infrared (IR) SCG can be better performed with asymmetric core PCF with compressed and high power pulse, while wider range of SCG can be performed with symmetric core PCF. Thus, this study will be extremely useful for designing/realizing fiber towards a custom application around these characteristics.

  • The DCF (Dcistributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function) are the basic MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. According to the DCF, each node performs the exponential backoff algorithm before the transmission of its data frame. Each node doubles the backoff waiting time before the transmission of its data frame whenever it detects the transmission collision with other nodes. Therefore, as the number of the active nodes having the data frames to transmit increases, the overall MAC performance of the DCF decreases. On the other hand, according to the PCF, each node is granted the transmission opportunity by which the PCF transmission is possible without the collision with other nodes. Therefore, as the number of the active nodes increases, the MAC performance of the PCF increases, In this paper, considering the tradeoff of MAC performance between the DCF and PCF, a hybrid MAC protocol is proposed to enhance the performance of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs.
