Projection spectral analysis is investigated and refined in this paper, in order to unify principal component analysis and independent component analysis. Singular value decomposition and spectral theorems are applied to nonsymmetric correlation or covariance matrices with multiplicities or singularities, where projections and nilpotents are obtained. Therefore, the suggested approach not only utilizes a sum-product of orthogonal projection operators and real distinct eigenvalues for squared singular values, but also reduces the dimension of correlation or covariance if there are multiple zero eigenvalues. Moreover, incremental learning strategies of projection spectral analysis are also suggested to improve the performance.
LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis) provides the projection that discriminates the data well, and shows a very good performance for face recognition. However, since LDA provides only one transformation matrix over whole data, it is not sufficient to discriminate the complex data consisting of many classes like honan faces. To overcome this weakness, we propose a new face recognition method, called LDA mixture model, that the set of alf classes are partitioned into several clusters and we get a transformation matrix for each cluster. This detailed representation will improve the classification performance greatly. In the simulation of face recognition, LDA mixture model outperforms PCA, LDA, and PCA mixture model in terms of classification performance.

In this paper, we propose a pupil detection method using PCA(principal component analysis) and Hough transform. To reduce error to detect eyebrows as pupil, eyebrows are detected using projection function in eye region and eye region is set to not include the eyebrows. In the eye region, pupil candidates are detected using rank order filter. False candidates are removed by using symmetry. The pupil candidates are grouped into pairs based on geometric constraints. A similarity measure is obtained for two eye of each pair using PCA and hough transform, we select a pair with the smallest similarity measure as final two pupils. The experiments have been performed for 1000 images of the BioID face database. The results show that it achieves the higher detection rate than existing method.

This paper is study on real-time hand gesture recognition system based on vision for intelligent robot control. We are proposed a recognition system using PCA and BP algorithm. Recognition of hand gestures consists of two steps which are preprocessing step using PCA algorithm and classification step using BP algorithm. The PCA algorithm is a technique used to reduce multidimensional data sets to lower dimensions for effective analysis. In our simulation, the PCA is applied to calculate feature projection vectors for the image of a given hand. The BP algorithm is capable of doing parallel distributed processing and expedite processing since it take parallel structure. The BP algorithm recognized in real time hand gestures by self learning of trained eigen hand gesture. The proposed PCA and BP algorithm show improvement on the recognition compared to PCA algorithm.

For the implementation of 3D Sound Localization system, the binaural filtering by HRTFs is generally employed. But the HRTF filter is of high order and its coefficients for all directions have to be stored, which imposes a rather large memory requirement. To cope with this, research works have centered on obtaining low dimensional HRTF representations without significant loss of information and synthesizing the original HRTF efficiently, by means of feature extraction methods for multivariate dat including PCA. In these researches, conventional linear PCA was applied to the frequency domain HRTF data and using relatively small number of principal components the original HRTFs could be synthesized in approximation. In this paper we applied neural network based nonlinear PCA model (NLPCA) and the nonlinear PLS repression model (NLPLS) for this low dimensional HRTF modeling and analyze the results in comparison with the PCA. The NLPCA that performs projection of data onto the nonlinear surfaces showed the capability of more efficient HRTF feature extraction than linear PCA and the NLPLS regression model that incorporates the direction information in feature extraction yielded more stable results in synthesizing general HRTFs not included in the model training.

Reliable face recognition under various illumination environments is essential for successful commercialization. Feature-based face recognition relies on a good choice of feature vectors. Gabor feature vectors are known to be more robust to variations of pose and illumination than any other feature vectors so that they are popularly adopted for face recognition. However, they are not completely independent of illuminations. In this paper, we propose an illumination-robust face recognition method based on the Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model. We first construct the Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model where Gator feature vector space is rendered to be decomposed into two orthogonal illumination subspace and face identity subspace. Since the Gabor feature vectors obtained by projection into the face identity subspace are separated from illumination, the face recognition utilizing them becomes more robust to illumination. Through experiments, it is shown that the proposed face recognition based on Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model performs more reliably under various illumination and Pose environments.

Classical principal component analysis (PCA) can be formulated as finding the linear subspace that best accommodates multidimensional data points in the sense that the sum of squared residual distances is minimized. As alternatives to such LS (least squares) fitting approach, we produce LMS (least median of squares) and LTS (least trimmed squares)-type PCA by minimizing the median of squared residual distances and the trimmed sum of squares, in a similar fashion to Rousseeuw (1984)'s alternative approaches to LS linear regression. Proposed methods adopt the data-driven optimization algorithm of Croux and Ruiz-Gazen (1996, 2005) that is conceptually simple and computationally practical. Numerical examples are given.
We designed the artificial olfactory sensing system (Electronic Nose) using MOS type sensor array fur recognizing and analyzing odour. The response of individual sensors of sensor array, each processing a slightly different response towards the sample volatiles, can provide enough information to discriminate between sample odours. In this paper, we applied clustering algorithm for dimension reduction, such as linear projection mapping (PCA method), nonlinear mapping (Sammon mapping method) and the combination of PCA and Sammon mapping having a better discriminating ability. The odours used are VOC (Volatile chemical compound) and Toxic gases.
Human posture recognition has attracted tremendous attention in ubiquitous environment, performing arts and robot control so that, recently, many researchers in pattern recognition and computer vision are working to make efficient posture recognition system. However the most of existing studies is very sensitive to human variations such as the rotation or the translation of body. This is why the feature, which is extracted from the feature extraction part as the first step of general posture recognition system, is influenced by these variations. To alleviate these human variations and improve the posture recognition result, this paper presents 3D Star Skeleton and Principle Component Analysis (PCA) based feature extraction methods in the multi-view environment. The proposed system use the 8 projection maps, a kind of depth map, as an input data. And the projection maps are extracted from the visual hull generation process. Though these data, the system constructs 3D Star Skeleton and extracts the rotation invariant feature using PCA. In experimental result, we extract the feature from the 3D Star Skeleton and recognize the human posture using the feature. Finally we prove that the proposed method is robust to human variations.

In recent years, the interests and needs of the Pedestrian Protection System (PPS), which is mounted on the vehicle for the purpose of traffic safety improvement is increasing. In this paper, we propose a pedestrian candidate window extraction and unit cell histogram based HOG descriptor calculation methods. At pedestrian detection candidate windows extraction stage, the bright ratio of pedestrian and its circumference region, vertical edge projection, edge factor, and PCA reconstruction image are used. Dalal's HOG requires pixel based histogram calculation by Gaussian weights and trilinear interpolation on overlapping blocks, But our method performs Gaussian down-weight and computes histogram on a per-cell basis, and then the histogram is combined with the adjacent cell, so our method can be calculated faster than Dalal's method. Our PCA reconstruction error based pedestrian detection candidate window extraction method efficiently classifies background based on the difference between pedestrian's head and shoulder area. The proposed method improves detection speed compared to the conventional HOG just using image without any prior information from camera calibration or depth map obtained from stereo cameras.
