  • Due to the rapid growth of mobile devices and applications, mobile cloud computing is becoming an important platform in the development of cloud services. However, the mobile cloud computing is facing many challenges in terms of the computing resources and communications. One of them is the performance issue between mobile devices and cloud server. In the paper, we implemented a hadoop-based android mobile application, called mobile TPC-C, and used it for evaluating the performance aspect between mobile devices and cloud server. The mobile TPC-C was implemented based on the existing TPC-C, to make it possible to execute on top of android mobile devices. The performance measurement using mobile TPC-C was executed on various transactions while changing the number of mobile clients. By comparing it to the evaluation on the personal PC, we tried to point out the important aspects affecting the performance improvement between mobile clients and cloud server.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose that co-working plan with patient information service system for dental clinic and dental lab using smart phone system which is recently spread to. For this purpose, we introduced latest mobile S/W development environment. And design key features of patient information service system based on mobile platform(Android) by user interface design. In fact, we have applied this system(mobile system) to dental clinic and dental lab, we have following results: 1.There were significant possibility in dental utilization of smart phone based on latest ICT(Information & Communication Technology) technology. 2. Improve conventional method of image upload by connecting digital camera to the server computer using USB port. 3. Reduce error of image management by direct upload to server computer from smart phone. 4. Improve process of making prosthetic appliance by displaying dental image on smart phone in dental lab.

  • In the field of computing service, there is a copernican revolution indebted to development of network & computer technology. Computer system, which is set to mainframe in the 1960's, is advancing torwards to the paradigm of server based computing, so-called thin-client. In thin-client computing, network is the platform which is responsible for transfer of application, so that client execute application installed on server. It is also possible that each system share the computing resource connected with network. In this parer, we suggest component & distributed computing technology as a measn for the implementation of thin-client architecture hence, make the best use of COM(Component Object Model and PYRO(PYthon Remote Objects). We talk about the concept and mechanism of thin-client at the beginning, and propose the design of network architecture for the implementation thin-client.

Parallel Implementations of Digital Focus Indices Based on Minimax Search Using Multi-Core Processors

  • A digital focus index (DFI) is a value used to determine image focus in scientific apparatus and smart devices. Automatic focus (AF) is an iterative and time-consuming procedure; however, its processing time can be reduced using a general processing unit (GPU) and a multi-core processor (MCP). In this study, parallel architectures of a minimax search algorithm (MSA) are applied to two DFIs: range algorithm (RA) and image contrast (CT). The DFIs are based on a histogram; however, the parallel computation of the histogram is conventionally inefficient because of the bank conflict in shared memory. The parallel architectures of RA and CT are constructed using parallel reduction for MSA, which is performed through parallel relative rating of the image pixel pairs and halved the rating in every step. The array size is then decreased to one, and the minimax is determined at the final reduction. Kernels for the architectures are constructed using open source software to make it relatively platform independent. The kernels are tested in a hexa-core PC and an embedded device using Lenna images of various sizes based on the resolutions of industrial cameras. The performance of the kernels for the DFIs was investigated in terms of processing speed and computational acceleration; the maximum acceleration was 32.6× in the best case and the MCP exhibited a higher performance.

  • Recently, the W3C has developed the HTML5 standard which gives the basis for providing various web applications on the web environments. Because of the advent of the smart devices and the broadband wireless network, users can accesse the web applications on the smart devices at anytime and anywhere. In addition, the demand on the multiscreen services, which enables users to use the appropriate device to their situation, has increased, since users have various smart devices. In this paper, we propose the grouping mechanism of web objects on the HTML5 based web platform, the extraction mechanism of the web object information which is used to create the web object on other devices, and the web object creation mechanism based on the received web object information. In addition, we propose the web service migration architecture between devices on the open web platform and implement the grouping, extraction and creation mechanism of the web objects on the test web document and generic web document with Chrome extension. Finally, we implement the delivery mechanism of the web object information between devices using the node.js and the WebSocket technologies.

Mobile application-based dietary sugar intake reduction intervention study according to the stages of behavior change in female college students (모바일 어플리케이션 기반 당류 저감화 중재 프로그램의 행동변화단계에 따른 효과 분석 : 일부 여대생 대상 연구)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of a mobile app-based program to reduce the dietary sugar intake according to the stages of the behavioral change in dietary sugar reduction in female college students. Methods: The program used in this study can monitor the dietary sugar intake after recording the dietary intake and provide education message for the reduction of dietary sugar intake. In an eight-week pre-post intervention study, 68 female college students were instructed to record all the food they consumed daily and received weekly education information. At pre-post intervention, the subjects were asked to answer the questionnaire about sugar-related nutrition knowledge, sugar-intake behavior, and sugar-intake frequency. For statistical analysis, ANOVA and a paired t-test were used for comparative analysis according Precontemplation (PC), Contemplation Preparation (C P), and A M (Action Maintenance) stage. Results: Significant differences were observed in the frequency of snacking, experience of nutrition education, and preference for sweetness according to the stages of behavior change in dietary sugar reduction. After finishing an intervention, the sugar-related nutrition knowledge score was increased significantly in the stages of Precontemplation (PC) and Contemplation Preparation (C P). The score of the sugar intake behavior increased significantly in all stages. The intake frequency of chocolate, muffins or cakes, and drinking yogurt decreased significantly in the PC stage and the intake frequency of biscuits, carbonated beverages, and fruit juice decreased significantly in the C P stage. Subjects in the PC and C P stages had an undesirable propensity in nutrition knowledge, sugar-intake behavior, and sugar-intake frequency compared to the A M stage, but this intervention improved significantly their nutrition knowledge, sugar-intake behavior, and sugar-intake frequency. Conclusion: This program can be an effective educational tool in the stages of PC and C P, and is expected to further increase the usability and sustainability of mobile application if supplemented appropriately to a health platform program.

  • As a way of augmenting constrained resources of mobile devices such as CPU and memory, many works on mobile cloud computing (MCC), where mobile devices utilize remote resources of cloud services or PCs, have been proposed. Typically, in MCC, many nodes with different operating systems and platform and diverse mobile applications or services are located, and a central manager autonomously performs several management tasks to maintain a consistent level of MCC overall quality. However, as there are a larger number of nodes, mobile applications, and services subscribed by the mobile applications and their interactions are extremely increased, a traditional management method of MCC reveals a fundamental problem of degrading its overall performance due to overloaded management tasks to the central manager, i.e. a bottle neck phenomenon. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a clustering-based optimization method to solve performance-related problems on large-scaled MCC and to stabilize its overall quality. With our proposed method, we can ensure to minimize the management overloads and stabilize the quality of MCC in an active and autonomous way.

Detection and Classification of Major Aerosol Type Using the Himawari-8/AHI Observation Data (Himawari-8/AHI 관측자료를 이용한 주요 대기 에어로솔 탐지 및 분류 방법)

  • Due to high spatio-temporal variability of amount and optical/microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols, satellite-based observations have been demanded for spatiotemporal monitoring the major aerosols. Observations of the heavy aerosol episodes and determination on the dominant aerosol types from a geostationary satellite can provide a chance to prepare in advance for harmful aerosol episodes as it can repeatedly monitor the temporal evolution. A new geostationary observation sensor, namely the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), onboard the Himawari-8 platform, has been observing high spatial and temporal images at sixteen wavelengths from 2016. Using observed spectral visible reflectance and infrared brightness temperature (BT), the algorithm to find major aerosol type such as volcanic ash (VA), desert dust (DD), polluted aerosol (PA), and clean aerosol (CA), was developed. RGB color composite image shows dusty, hazy, and cloudy area then it can be applied for comparing aerosol detection product (ADP). The CALIPSO level 2 vertical feature mask (VFM) data and MODIS level 2 aerosol product are used to be compared with the Himawari-8/AHI ADP. The VFM products can deliver nearly coincident dataset, but not many match-ups can be returned due to presence of clouds and very narrow swath. From the case study, the percent correct (PC) values acquired from this comparisons are 0.76 for DD, 0.99 for PA, 0.87 for CA, respectively. The MODIS L2 Aerosol products can deliver nearly coincident dataset with many collocated locations over ocean and land. Increased accuracy values were acquired in Asian region as POD=0.96 over land and 0.69 over ocean, which were comparable to full disc region as POD=0.93 over land and 0.48 over ocean. The Himawari-8/AHI ADP algorithm is going to be improved continuously as well as the validation efforts will be processed by comparing the larger number of collocation data with another satellite or ground based observation data.

  • The continued development of smart devices representing smart phones and tablet PC has made significant changes to the ICT ecosystem. Along the development of smart devices, consumers' needs are also becoming increasingly diversified in addition to their rising expectations. Thus, in order to fulfill the changing customer needs, corporations in the ICT ecosystem have recently focused on appcessory products that are interlinked and utilized in existing smart devices. This study particularly analyzes the two corporations, Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom, which recently plunged into appcessory business. By the case study of these two companies based on the theories of ecosystem and platforms, this study analyzes the current status of the appcessory market, the potentials and significances of the business, business background of the two corporations, and the status of leadership competition in the appcessory market. In the case of Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom, the study shows that both corporations acquired new growth powers in the appcessory market with their entry into existing or other relating markets. Also, since the appcessory business is highly related to their existing businesses, each company was able to take advantages based on the capability that they already possessed and this relationship had positive effects on their overall businesses. In addition, the two corporations had common strategies in increasing their competitiveness by identifying internal weaknesses and building external cooperations. On the other hand, since the two companies have different business areas, their business background, business strategies, and the effects of expectations varied to each other. Thus, this study identifies commonalities and differences between recent smart platforms and corporations' engagement in the fierce leadership competition in the appcessory market.

An efficient 2.5D inversion of loop-loop electromagnetic data (루프-루프 전자탐사자료의 효과적인 2.5차원 역산)

  • We have developed an inversion algorithm for loop-loop electromagnetic (EM) data, based on the localised non-linear or extended Born approximation to the solution of the 2.5D integral equation describing an EM scattering problem. Source and receiver configuration may be horizontal co-planar (HCP) or vertical co-planar (VCP). Both multi-frequency and multi-separation data can be incorporated. Our inversion code runs on a PC platform without heavy computational load. For the sake of stable and high-resolution performance of the inversion, we implemented an algorithm determining an optimum spatially varying Lagrangian multiplier as a function of sensitivity distribution, through parameter resolution matrix and Backus-Gilbert spread function analysis. Considering that the different source-receiver orientation characteristics cause inconsistent sensitivities to the resistivity structure in simultaneous inversion of HCP and VCP data, which affects the stability and resolution of the inversion result, we adapted a weighting scheme based on the variances of misfits between the measured and calculated datasets. The accuracy of the modelling code that we have developed has been proven over the frequency, conductivity, and geometric ranges typically used in a loop-loop EM system through comparison with 2.5D finite-element modelling results. We first applied the inversion to synthetic data, from a model with resistive as well as conductive inhomogeneities embedded in a homogeneous half-space, to validate its performance. Applying the inversion to field data and comparing the result with that of dc resistivity data, we conclude that the newly developed algorithm provides a reasonable image of the subsurface.
