The $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ Spectra Atlas of Type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei with AKARI: Establishing the Black Hole Mass Estimator of Active Galactic Nuclei with Hydrogen Brackett Lines

  • The $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ spectrum of AGN was poorly understood due to the atmosphere effect beyond $2{\mu}m$. Nevertheless, the $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ range includes several important lines, such as $Br{\beta}$ ($2.63{\mu}m$), $Br{\alpha}$ ($4.05{\mu}m$), PAH (3.3${\mu}m$) and many molecular or atomic lines. We compile $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ spectra of 79 AGNs and QSOs from infrared camera (IRC) on AKARI infrared astronomy satellite. Our $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ spectra will provide an access to full wavelength spectra of AGNs for the first time. Moreover, we present the Brackett line properties, FWHMs and luminosities, of AGNs. Using these Brackett line properties, we derive new black hole (BH) mass estimators. The new BH mass estimators using NIR hydrogen lines will be very useful to estimate BH mass of dusty red AGNs in the future.

Degradation of Phenanthrene by Sphingomonas sp. 1-21 Isolated from Oil-Contaminated Soil

  • A Phenanthrene-degrading bacterium, Strain 1-21 was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. This strain was a Gram-negative, aerobic, and rod-shaped bacterium, and exhibited a 99% sequence similarity of 16S rDNA to that of Sphingomonas subarctica. The major cellular fatty acid was a summed feature 7(18:1 w7c, 18:1 w9t, 18:1 s12t), which is a characteristic of the Sphingomonas species. When 200 and 1,000 ppm of phenanthrene was added as the sole carbon source, Strain 1-21 degraded 98% and 67% after 10 days of incubation, respectively. Futhermore, this strain was also able to utilized naphthalene and fluorene as sole carbon and energy sources.

  • 해양환경에서 큰문제가 되고 있는 아주 작은 크기의 플라스틱 입자인 미세플라스틱(Microplastic)은 잔류성이 크고 생물축적성이 있는 잔류성 유기오염 물질(POP)을 잘흡착하여 해양환경과 먹이사슬에 지대한 피해를 끼친다. 본 연구에서는 해양에 존재하는 대표적인 미세플라스틱 uPVC와 입자상의 잔류성 유기오염 물질 PAH를 원형 실린더로 가정하여 해양 환경에서 침강하고 있는 미세플라스틱이 잔류성 유기오염 물질에 의해 오염될 가능성을 알아보았다 이를 위해 표층및 심층수 환경에서 반지름에 따른 충돌효율과 접촉 시간을 구하여 두 실린더가 접촉할 시간의 기댓값인 기대 접촉시간을 계산하였다.

  • The mitigation or elimination of methanol crossover for perfluorosulfonic acid fuel cell membranes has been investigated extensively for direct methanol fuel cell applications with the aim of increasing the electrochemical performance and enhancing the utilization rate of methanol. Self-assembly modifications by applying an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte to Nafion membranes were attempted in order to block or reduce methanol crossover while maintaining the other advantageous properties of Nafion membranes. It was reported that anionic polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) was the most efficient polyelectrolyte in reducing methanol crossover, and considerable cell performance was obtained even at a methanol feed concentration of 10 M.

Biodegradation of Phenanthrene by Sphingomonsa sp. Strain KH3-2

  • A phenanthrene-degrading bacterium was isolated from an oil-spilled intertidal sediment sample and identified as Sphingomonas sp. KH3-2. The strain degraded polycyclic aromatic compounds such naphthalene, fluorene, biphenyl, and dibenzothiophene. When strain KH3-2 was cultured for 28 days at 25C, a total of 500 ppm of phenanthrene was degrated with a concomitant production of biomass and Folin-Ciocalteau reactive aromatic intermediates. Analysis of intermediates during phenanthrene degradation using high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry indicated that Sphingomonas sp. KH3-2 primarily degrades phenanthrene to 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1H2NA) and further metabolizes 1H2NA through the degradation pathway of naphthalene.

  • We report a facile one-pot aqueous-phase synthesis of PdAu bimetallic nanoparticles with different Pd/Au ratio. The synthesis was conducted by co-reduction of Pd and Au precursor using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and in the presence of polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH). By high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analyses, we found that the synthesized nanoparticles had an onion-like core/shell/shell/shell structure with Au-rich core, Pd-rich shell, Au-rich shell, and Pd shell, respectively. We also investigated the catalytic performance of the synthesized PdAu nanoparticles toward hydrogen peroxide generation reaction.

Elucidating H/D-Exchange Mechanism of Active Hydrogen in Aniline and Benzene-1,2-dithiol

  • In this study, the hydrogen/deuterium (HDX) exchange mechanism of active hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) dissolved in toluene and deuterated methanol by atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) is investigated. The comparison of the data obtained using APPI suggests that aniline and benzene-1,2-dithiol contain two exchanging hydrogens. The APPI HDX that best explains the experimental findings was investigated with the use of quantum mechanical calculations. The HDX mechanism is composed of a two-step reaction: in the first step, analyte radical ion gets deuterated, and in the second step, the hydrogen transfer occurs from deuterated analyte to de-deuterated methanol to complete the exchange reaction. The suggested mechanism provides fundamentals for the HDX technique that is important for structural identification with mass spectrometry.   • Oltipraz, a cancer chemopreventive agent, induces CYP1A1 to a certain extent by transactivation of the gene via the Ah receptor (AhR)-xenobiotic response element (XRE) pathway. Previously, we showed that oltipraz promoted CCAAT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP ) activation, which leads to the induction of glutathione S-transferase. Given that oltipraz activates C/EBP for gene transactivation and that the putative C/CBP binding site is located in CY)1A1 promoter region, this study investigated the effect of oltipraz on CYP1A1 induction by 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC).   • The purpose of this study was to develop an analytical method for determining 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of EU priority using gas chromatography (GC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS). The PAHs in ground coffee were analyzed after being extracted using methods such as saponification-liquid-liquid extraction, Soxhlet extraction, and solid-liquid extraction. The solid-liquid extraction method showed the greatest repeatability and most efficient reduction of the matrix effect. GC-tandem MS for the quantification of the 15 PAHs showed better resolution and lower limit of detections (LODs) than GC-MS-selected ion monitoring (SIM) and high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector. LODs of this method for the ground coffee types were 0.002-0.1 ${\mu}g/kg$ and limit of quantifications (LOQs) were 0.006-0.2 ${\mu}g/kg$ The recoveries ranged from 52.6 to 93.3%. Forty-six commercial types of ground coffee were analyzed to determine their PAHs contamination levels. PAHs concentration ranged from ND to 5.988 ${\mu}g/kg$. This study was conducted with toxicity equivalence factors, the U.S. EPA recommendation to identify dietary risks for PAHs in different types of coffee. The estimated average daily dose of PAHs was $5.24{\times}10^{-8}$ mg/kg body weight/day.

Indoor Exposure and Health Risk of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) via Public Facilities PM2.5, Korea (II)

  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate the pollution level (gaseous and particle phase) in the public facilities for the PAHs, non-regulated materials, forecast the risk level by the health risk assessment (HRA) and propose the guideline level. PAH assessments through sampling of particulate matter of diameter < 2.5 ${\mu}m$ ($PM_{2.5}$). The user and worker exposure scenario for the PAHs consists of 24-hour exposure scenario (WIES) assuming the worst case and the normal exposure scenario (MIES) based on the survey. This study investigated 20 PAH substances selected out of 32 substances known to be carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic. The risk assessment applies major toxic equivalency factor (TEF) proposed from existing studies and estaimates individual Excess Cancer Risk (ECR). The study assesses the fine dusts ($PM_{2.5}$) and the exposure levels of the gaseous and particle PAH materials for 6 spots in each 8 facility, e.g. underground subway stations, child-care facilities, elderly care facilities, super market, indoor parking lot, terminal waiting room, internet caf$\acute{e}$ (PC-rooms), movie theater. For internet caf$\acute{e}$ (PC-rooms) in particular, that marks the highest $PM_{2.5}$ concentration and the average concentration of 10 spots (2 spots for each cafe) is 73.3 ${\mu}g/m^3$ (range: 6.8-185.2 ${\mu}g/m^3$). The high level of $PM_{2.5}$ seen in internet cafes was likely due to indoor smoking in most cases. For the gaseous PAHs, the detection frequency for 4-5 rings shows high and the elements with 6 rings shows low frequency. For the particle PAHs, the detection frequency for 2-3 rings shows low and the elements with 6 rings show high frequency. As a result, it is investigated that the most important PAHs are the naphthalene, acenaphthene and phenanthrene from the study of Kim et al. (2013) and this annual study. The health risk assessment demonstrates that each facility shows the level of $10^{-6}-10^{-4}$. Considering standards and local source of pollution levels, it is judged that the management standard of the benzo (a)pyrene, one of the PAHs, shall be managed with the range of 0.5-1.2 $ng/m^3$. Smoking and ventilation were considered as the most important PAHs exposure associated with public facility $PM_{2.5}$. This study only estimated for inhalation health risk of PAHs and focused on the associated cancer risk, while multiple measurements would be necessary for public health and policy.
