  • The purpose of this study was to survey a development of the wireless transmission system of medical images for ubiquitous medicine. There have been many changes in medical equipments and medical record medical treatment and medical record within hospital and PACS(Picture Archiving Communication System) which is picture management system for patients can be typical cases. It is difficult to use these automated medical systems unless they are within hospital and in case of rapid image reading in the emergency cases or in absence of doctor, it is difficult to perform it immediately. The present study implemented an image transmission system using CDMA connection so that images in the server can be viewed at any time and in any place. Remote wireless diagnosis based on medical images using PDA is applicable to medical areas that require mobility, and the use of PDA can be an ideal alternative for point of care. The use of PDA enables prompt and accurate access to digital medical images, which in turn reduces medical accidents and improves the quality of medical services through high productivity and efficiency of medical practitioners' works. It also enables quick response to patients' demands and high-quality medical services and, consequently, patients' high satisfaction.

  • Due to the bandwidth and storage limitations, medical images are needed to be compressed before transmission and storage. DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) specification, which is the medical images standard, provides a mechanism for supporting the use of JPEG still image compression standard. In this paper, we explain a method for compressing medical images by JPEG standard and propose two methods for JPEG compression. First, because medical images differ from natural images in optical feature, we propose a method to design adaptively the quantization table using spectrum analysis. Second, because medical images have higher pixel depth than natural images do, we propose a method to design Huffman table which considers the probability distribution feature of symbols. Therefore, we propose methods to design a quantization table and Huffman table suitable for medical images. Simulation results show the improved performance compared to the quantization table and the adjusted Huffman table of JPEG standard. Proposed methods which are satisfied JPEG Standard, can be applied to PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System).

  • In angiography, the global standard agreements of DICOM is lossless. But it brings on overload and takes too much store space in DICOM sever. Because of all those things we transmit images which is classified in subjective way. But this cause data loss and would be lead doctors to make wrong reading. As a result of that we try to transmit continued image (raw data) to reduce those mistakes. We got angiography images from the equipment(Allura FD20-Philips). And compressed it in two different methods(lossless & lossy fair). and then transmitted them to PACS system. We compared the quality of QC phantom images that are compressed by different compress method and compared spatial resolution of each images after CD copy. Then compared each Image's data volume(lossless & lossy fair). We measured spatial resolution of each image. All of them had indicated 401p/mm. We measured spatial resolution of each image after CD copy. We got also same conclusion (401p/mm). The volume of continued image (raw data) was 127.8MB(360.5 sheets on average) compressed in lossless and 29.5MB(360.5 sheets) compressed in lossy fair. In case of classified image, it was 47.35MB(133.7 sheets) in lossless and 4.5MB(133.7 sheets) in lossy fair. In case of angiography the diagnosis is based on continued image(raw data). But we transmit classified image. Because transmitting continued image causes some problems in PACS system especially transmission and store field. We transmit classified image compressed in lossless But it is subjective and would be different depend on radiologist. therefore it would make doctors do wrong reading when patients transfer another hospital. So we suggest that transmit continued image(raw data) compressed in lossy fair. It reduces about 60% of data volume compared with classified image. And the image quality is same after CD copy.

  • The diagnostic medical images(CT, MRI) in PACS require large storage and long transmission time. A simple and cheap way of overcoming these limitations is to increase the compression ratio. However, this requires a clinical validation for accurate diagnostic applications. The aim of this paper is to improve the compression efficiency of lossless JPEG2000 for diagnostic CT images by performing a visual-Iossless threshold filtering in high frequency subband. A proposed method, based on 5/3 reversible DWT, provides different subband-threshold values according to the compression ratio and gives the high subjective quality to reconstructed diagnostic CT images.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the image quality of the SE-EPI and SSH-TSE technique for MR DWI. Datum were analyzed for 35 PACS transmission datum(Normal part: 12 males, 13 females, Cerebral Infarction: 10(5males and 5females), and average age 68±7.32), randomly selected patients who underwent MRDWI tests. The equipment used was Ingenia CX 3.0T, SSH_TSE and SE-EPI pulse sequence and 32 Ch. head coil were used for data acquisition. Image evaluation was performed on the paired t-test and Wilcoxon tests, and was considered significant when the p value was 0.05 or less. As a result of quantitative analysis of SNR for DWI images, the mean and standard deviation values of 4 parts (WM, GM, BG, Cerebellum) in ADC (s/mm2), Diffusion b=0, 1000 images were higher in SE-EPI techniques(ADC: 120.50 ± 40, b=0: 54.50 ± 35.91, b=1000: 91.61 ± 36.63) than in SSH-TSE techniques(ADC: 99.69 ± 31.10, b=0: 43.52 ± 25.00 , b=1000: 60.74 ± 24.85)(p<0.05). The CNR values for GM-WM, BG-WM sites were also higher in SE-EPI technique (ADC: 116.08 ± 43.30, b=0:27.23 ± 09.10, b=1000: 78.50 ± 16.56) than in SSH-TSE(ADC: 101.08 ± 36.81, b=0: 23.96 ± 07.79 , b=1000: 74.30 ± 14.22). As a visual evaluation of observers, ghost artifact, magnetic susceptibility artifacts and overall image quality for SE-TSE and SSH-TSE all yielded high results from SSH-TSE techniques(ADC:3.6 ± 0.1, 2.8 ± 0.2, b=0: 4.3 ± 0.3, 3.4 ± 0.1 b=1000: 4.3 ± 0.2, 3.5 ± 0.2, p=0.000). In conclusion, the SE-EPI technique obtained an superiority in SNR and CNR measurements using SSH-TSE, SE-EPI. In the qualitative analysis, the SSH-TSE pulse sequence was obtained a high result according to the pulse sequence characteristics.
