The efficiency of powdered activated carbon (PAC) for removing taste and odor (T&O) in drinking water supplies is dependent on the contact time, quality of mixing, and the presence of competing compounds. All of these are strongly influenced by the stage in the treatment process at which the PAC is added. In conventional water treatment plants (WTPs), PAC is commonly added into the rapid mixing basin where chemicals such as coagulants, alkaline chemicals, and chlorine, are simultaneously applied. In order to prevent interference between PAC and other water treatment chemicals, alternative locations for addition of PAC, such as at transmission pipe in the water intake tower or into a separated PAC contactor, were investigated. Whatever the location, addition of PAC apart from other water treatment chemicals was more effective for geosmin removal than simultaneous addition. Among several combinations, the sequence 'chlorine-PAC-coagulant' produced the best result with respect to geosmin removal efficiency. Consequently, when PAC has to be applied to cope with T&O problems in conventional WTPs, it is very important to prevent interference with other water treatment chemicals, such as chlorine and coagulant. Adequate contact time should also be given for adsorption of the T&O compounds onto the PAC. To satisfy these conditions, installation of a separated PAC contactor would be the superior alternative if there is space available in the WTP. If necessary, PAC could be added at transmission pipe in the water intake tower and still provide some benefit for T&O treatment.
Because permeate flux was very low as It has the suspension soled of higher concentration In the trafiltration membrane separation treatment of dyestuff wastewater, pre-treatment of Ponton reaction was carried out. In the case of pH 3, COD removal rate was the hi각erst of 58%. When PAC was added into the pre-treatment supernatant, the COD removal rate was found to be 53% , and when COD was 153mg/L, the removal rate was 92.3% in the trafiltration separation. In addition, the effect of the addition of PAC on the permeate flux was also investigated. The decrease of permeate flux In the presence of PAC was higher than In the abscence of PAC, but the recovery of permeability by cleaning was better In the case of PAC system.

This study aims at an assessment of the effectiveness of taste & odor removal and transmembrane pressure changes in a pilot membrane plant(500m3/day) by adding PAC to MF process, and at providing a basis for applying it to the advanced water treatment process. The transmembrane pressure showed, in low turbidity of raw water, a tendency to decrease when PAC was injected at the Flux of 1, $1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$, while it increased in high Flux($1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$) in high turbidity of raw water. in addtion, it is shown that the fouling could be reduced more when PAC is injected together with appropriate amount of coagulant, than when PAC is solely injected. Taste & Odor-causing 2-MIB may not be detected in membrane filtered water, if the amount of PAC injection is increased in accordance with the increasing concentration of 2-MIB. Hence, PAC injection, as a pre-treatment process in MF membrane filtering, is supposed to be a suitable process for reducing fouling as well as for improvement effectiveness of taste & odor treatment.
This study was conducted to survey trihalomethane(THMs) levels in finished water of J water treatment plant and examine its reduction by powder activated carbon(PAC) treatment. Samples were collected weekly based and head-space technique was employed to determine THMs levels by G.C-ECD. THMs levels in finished waters were highest in August and showed close relationship with water temperature. All the samples satisfied the drinking water limit(100 ${\mu}$g/l) for THMs. The individual formation rates of THMs were 64.8% for CHCl$_3$, 28.4% for CHCl$_2$BR, 6.5% for CHClBr$_2$ and 0.3% for CHBr$_3$, respectively and showed little monthly difference. The reduction efficiency of THMs formation by PAC treatment was 67% during July and August. Bromine substituents were more efficiently reduced than CHCl$_3$ by PAC.

NIB(methylisoborneol) is an earthy/musty odor compound produced as a second metabolite by cyanobacteria and actinomycetes. MIB is not removed by conventional water treatment(coagulation, sedimentation, filtration) and its presence in tap water, even at low ng/L levels, can result in consumer complaints. PAC(powdered activated carbon) can effectively remove MIB when the correct dose is applied. But, since most operators in water treatment plants apply a PAC dose and then adjust that dose depending on direct observation (odor detection) after treatment, the result is often under-dose or eve,-dose. In this study, kinetic and isotherm tests using $^{14}C$-radiolabeled MIB were performed to determine coefficients for the HSDM(homogeneous surface diffusion model), including liquid film mass transfer coefficient($K_f$) and surface diffusion coefficient ($D_s$). The HSDM gave a reasonable fit and allowed prediction with the experimental data. Base on the HSDM, the authors developed an optimum PAC dose prediction program using the Excel spreadsheet. When the developed program was applied at two water treatment plants, the PAC dose based on the experience of operators in the water treatment plant was significantly different from that recommended by the newly developed program. If operators are willing to use the optimum PAC dose prediction program, it should solve dosing problems.

Waste aluminum dross was leached with hydrochloric acid to prepare PAC, poly aluminium chloride, used as water treatment chemicals. Metallic aluminum remained in the waste aluminum dross was dissolved into the hydrochloric acid solution. The solution could be used as PAC after adjusting the required alumina concentration and the basicity. Comparing to the conventional method far preparation of PAC using aluminum hydroxide, material cost could be saved in this method. Also, there is an additional merit in view of recycling of the waste aluminum dross by reducing the amount of waste dross to be landfilled.
This study was accomplished to get the basic data for the optimum chemical feed, evaluating interference between tastes and odors chemicals and coagulants in existing water treatment processes. During the tastes and odors occurs at D intaking tower area in 1995, PAC(Powdered Activated Carbon) feed with coagulants was PAC feed only and with coagulant simultaneously were appeared TON removal efficiency about 84%-87% within 20 min reaction time, but feed with time intervals was about 98% TON removal efficiency. Therefore in the case of PAC feed with coagulant, it is effective to feed coagulant on some time intervals in removing tastes and odors. It is not effective to feed PAC with chlorine dioxide($ClO_2$) or chlorine simultaneously in removing tastes and odors, because these chemicals were reduced the adsorption capacity of PAC.
In the following study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used for prediction of permeate flux decline during oily wastewater treatment by hybrid powdered activated carbon-microfiltration (PAC-MF) process using mullite and mullite-alumina ceramic membranes. Permeate flux is predicted as a function of time and PAC concentration. To optimize the networks performance, different transfer functions and different initial weights and biases have been tested. Totally, more than 850,000 different networks are tested for both membranes. The results showed that 10:6 and 9:20 neural networks work best for mullite and mullite-alumina ceramic membranes in PAC-MF process, respectively. These networks provide low mean squared error and high linearity between target and predicted data (high $R^2$ value). Finally, the results present that ANN provide best results ($R^2$ value equal to 0.99999) for prediction of permeation flux decline during oily wastewater treatment in PAC-MF process by ceramic membranes.
This study was performed to determine the optimum coagulant dosing for effective treatment of raw water in Chinyang lake. Removal rates of algae and characteristics of the water according to coagulants dosage were investigated by treatment with Microcystis aeruginosa, which is a kind of blue-green algae, to the raw water below 5NTU.
The coagulants dosage for maximum removal rate of algae were 30 mg/$\ell$ of Alum, 30 mg/$\ell$ of PAC and 10 mg/$\ell$ of PACS, respectively. The removal rate of algae in 30 mg/$\ell$ of PAC was highest as 85% compared with the other treatments. At the point of maximum removal rate of algae, the removal rates of turbidity were 34%, 66% and 22% in Alum, PAC and PACS, respectively. Residual Al was decreased depend upon decreasing turtidity in water by treatment of Alum or PAC, but decreased depend upon increasing turbidity in water by treatment of PACS. The removal rate of ${Mn}_{2+}$ in water was high in the order of Alum, PAC and PACS treatment. And ${Fe}_{2+}$ in water was not changed by treatemnt of these coagulants. Particle numbers distributions according to the particle size of suspended solids that were not precipitated at 8 min. of settling time after treatment of coagulants dosage for the maximum removal rate of algae were investigated. Most of the particle sizes were below 30 $\mu$m and particle numbers distributions below 10 $\mu$m were 64%, 56% and 66% by treatment of Alum, PAC and PACS, respectively. Zeta potential was in the range of -6.1~-9.7 mV at optimum coagulants dosage for algae removal.

To meet the reinforced discharge standards, effect of coagulant PAC (Poly aluminium chloride, 10.4% as $Al_2O_3$) on phosphorous removal in advanced wastewater treatment process (a modified $A^2$/O). 15 mg/L of PAC determined by jar-test was added to influent of settling basin in a modified $A^2$/O consists of anaerobic, anoxic, and oxic chamber which contains Bio-clod and porous polyurethane media. Performance of PAC was tested by supernatant after settling. The removal efficiencies of BOD, COD, TP (total phosphorus) and SP (soluble phosphorus) on biological process with PAC were 96.1%, 88.8%, 97.0% and 98.6%, compared with those on biological process without PAC were 95.4%, 72.4%, 71.6% and 59.5% respectively. 18.4% of TP and 39.1% of SP removal efficiency was increased, although increase of BOD and COD removal rate was not significant. Only PAC addition to influent of settling basin in $A^2O$ process can help total phosphorus removal to 0.13 mg/L with following discharge standard.
