  • The influences of fish oil and different levels of vitamin I supplement on hepatocellular chemical carcinogenesis have been studied. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received diethylnitrosamine (DEN)(200mg/kg body weight) and were subjected to two-thirds partial hepatectomy to induce murine chemical hepatocarcinogenic procedure. Placental glutathione S-transferase(GST-P) positive foci area, antioxidant enzymes(Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, glutathione reductase (GR), total- glutathione peroxidase (TGPx), glutathione S -transferase (GST)), glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activities, and lipid peroxidation of microsomes(thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)) were measured. Experimental animals were fed 15% corn or fish oil with 0, 40, 1,000, 10,000IU vitamin E /kg diet for 8 weeks. Vitamin E supplements decreased the area of GST-P positive foci in both groups. The higher the vitamin E levels, the smaller the area of GST-P positive foci were noticed. Compared to 0 IU vitamin E, 40 IU in corn oil and 1,000 IU in fish oil groups were effective in decreasing G57-P positive foci area. Fish oil groups tended to have smaller area of GST-P positive foci. fish oil groups showed lower body weight, lower activities of Cu/Zn-SOD and TGPx, higher TBARS contents, higher activities of GST, catalase, G6Pase, GR and higher liver/body ratio than corn oil groups. As the level of vitamin I increased, GST-P positive foci count, catalase activities, and TBARS tended to decrease. G6Pase activities tended to increase in both groups. At higher vitamin E levels, GST activities tended to decrease in fish oil groups. These results suggest that vitamin I has suppressive offects on hepatocellular chemical carcinogenesis probably through antioxidant eH:cts decreasing TBARS contents, $H_2O$$_2$, and organic peroxides. fish oil tended to have greated suppressive offects than corn oil on hepatocellular carcinogenesis. • Recent patterns of Enterobius vermicularis infection in some kindergarten children was per-formed in Taegu and Kyongbuk Area from June 1, 1993 through August 30, 1995. A total of 1,087 children (male 611 and female 476) were examined by Graham's scotch tape method. Of 643 urban children,62(9.6%) were infected by E. vermicularis, and of 444 rural children,45(10.1%)were infected. Of 354 male children in urban area 40(11.3%) were E. vermicularis positive and of 257 male children in rural area,28(10.9%) were E. vermicularis positive. Of 128 children in the age of 7 years old in urban area,7(5.1%) were E. vermicularis positive but of 87 children in the same age group in rural area,21(24.1%) were E. vermicularis positive (P〈0.01). Of 354 male children in urban area,40(11.3%) were E. vermicularis positive and of 289 female children in the same area 22(7.6%) were infected by E. vermicularis. The E. vermicularis infection rates in the children in the age group of 4,5, and 6 were 6.3%, 8.4% and 19.3% respectively, and the rate for 7 year old children was 5.5% (P 〈0.01). In rural area, 28(10.9%) of 257 male children had E. vermicularis and 17(9.1%) of 187 female children had E. vermicularis. The E. ver-micularis infection rates in the age groups of 4, 5, 6 and 7 were 2.3%, 7.0% 9.8% and 24.1% respectively and the difference in rates were statistically significant (P 〈0.01).

  • In an effort to produce high quality Angelica gigas in the southern area of Korea, a variety of mulching materials were used to prevent withering during the summer. The experimental results are summarized as follows. Soil water content and temperature under various mulching materials were higher than those without mulching, in all the cases studied. Among various mulching materials P. E.(polyethylene) mulching material showed the highest effect. The appearance of weeds was the lowest when using the black P. E. mulching, while growth of weeds was the greatest when using transparent mulching. Growth and development of the plant were better with P. E. mulching than straw mulching or no mulching, allowed for more and bigger leaves. The bolting rate was about 2∼5%, with a slightly larger value under P. E. mulching. Under P. E. mulching, probably due to good physical properties of the soil the number of roots was large, and the length and diameter were good. Active growth of roots under P. E. mulching resulted in a yield increase of the plant. The black P. E. mulching material showed a prominent effect on suppression of weed growth, and the black P. E. material was considered to be the most recommendable among various P. E. mulching materials when there is a lack of labor.

  • The influences of dietary supplements of vitamin E on hepatocellular chemical carcinogenesis have been studied, Placental glutathione S-transferase(GST-P) positive foci area, antioxidant enzymes(superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase(GST)), glucose 6-phosphatase(G6Pase) activities, and lipid peroxidation of mecrosomes(thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) contents) were investigated. For is purpose , we used the murine chemical hepatocardinogenic procedure induced by modified Ito model, which consists of 200mg/kg body weight diethylinitrosamine (DEN) injection, 0.01% 2-acethlaminoflurene(2-AAF) feeding for 6 weeks, and partial hepatectomy on week 3. Weanling Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed pulverized Purina rat chow with 15, 000IU/kg diet vitamin E from initiation or promotion stages. We found that vitamin E supplement decreased the area of GST-P positive foci. Catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase. GST activities, and TBARS contents were decreased. On the other hand G6Pase activities were increased by vitamin E supplement. It seemed that vitamin E supplements helped endogenous defense systems against carcinogenesis by decreasing TBARS contents, $H_2O$$_2$ and organic peroxides. So, vitamin E seemed to protect cell from free radical damage in carcinogenesis. Anticarcinogenic effects of vitamin E were more effective at intiation that at promotion stage. These results suggest that vitamin E has suppressive effects on hepatocellular chemical carcinogenesis, probably through antioxidant effects against TBARS contents $H_2O$$_2$ and orgainc peroxides.

  • To get basic data for quality grading of Mandarin oranges, the oranges were collected from five major areas distributed in Cheju Island, Korea for 3 years and the quality characteristics such as greenness, size, weight, uniformity, sweetness, pH and titratable acidity and its distributions were analyzed. The mean value of greenness (100- yellowness) of peel color in Mandarin oranges was 2.58% and its variation was very large, 9.04%. The average height and diameter of the oranges were 47.51 mm and 56.05 mm, respectively. The average weight was 82.24 g and its variation was 29.92g. The sweetness varied between 5.60$^{\circ}$Brix and 17.2$^{\circ}$Brix and its average value was 10.53$^{\circ}$Brix. The average values of the pH and total acidity of the oranges were 3.90 and 0.71 %, individually. In quality characteristics of Mandarin oranges according to the cultivated areas, area D had the lowest value in the strength of greenness, 1.14% and area D had the highest value, 3.53%. The highest values of the height and diameter in Mandarin oranges were 49.35mm and 57.48mm for area A and the lowest values of them were 46.35mm and 54.87mm for area E, respectively. The highest value of the weight in Mandarin oranges was 87.61 g for area A and the lowest value was 76.77g fer area E. Although the sweetness ranged from 10.2$^{\circ}$Brix for area E to 10.75$^{\circ}$Brix for area D, the difference by the areas was insignificant. For pH values, area B had the highest value, 3.96, while area E showed the lowest value, 3.78. Area A and E in titratable acidity were the areas shown the highest value, 0.75%, whereas area B marked the lowest value, 0.64%.

  • To select fruit trees suitable for shaded urban garden with Elaeagnus umbellata var. coreana, Malus domestica 'Alps Otome', Malus domestica 'Fujii', Prunus mume, Prunus persica for. persica, Rubus fructicosus, and Vaccinium corymbosum 'Reka', leaf growth in response to different light was investigated two years after 35% shade treatment. Leaf area of E. umbellata var. coreana, M. domestica 'Alps Otome', P. mume, P. persica for. persica, and V. corymbosum 'Reka' increased in shading. Fresh weight of leaves make inconsistent response to shading in every species but dry weight of E. umbellata var. coreana and P. persica for. persica showed the highest 150% and 148%, increment, respectively. Althought leaf water content of E. umbellata var. coreana decreased in shading, there is no difference in P. persica for. persica. Chlorophyll value of E. umbellata var. coreana and P. persica for. persica that showed higher than any other species is correlated with dark leaf green. Compared to specific leaf weight of E. umbellata var. coreana, P. persica for. persica, and V. corymbosum 'Reka' showed lower than any other species in shading, that of M. domestica 'Fujii', and R. fructicosus increased in reverse. These results indicate that E. umbellata var. coreana and P. persica for. persica that showed high value in several invesetigaton items are suitable for shady urban condition considering leaf growth in response to shading.

  • We investigated the foraging habitat preferences of herons and egrets in an agricultural area in Asan city, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. In the study area, rice fields were the most abundant habitat type (86.8%) and total suitable feeding habitat was greater in the northern area (59.0%) than the southern area (22.5%) of the colony. Most feeding herons and egrets were located in the northern area of the colony. The number of feeding individuals in a given area was related to the available feeding area (Pearson correlation, r=0.773, p<0.001 for field habitats; r=0.901, p<0.001 for freshwater habitats). Feeding habitat preferences differed among species. Grey herons (Ardea cinerea), great egrets (Egretta alba), and black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) used reservoirs and ditches. However, intermediate egrets (E. intermedia) and cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) were dependent on rice fields. The little egret (E. garzetta) was a habitat generalist using all types of habitats. The two largest species, grey herons and great egrets, fed at deeper site than little egrets and foraged in deeper sites in reservoirs than in ditches (${\chi}^2-test,\;{\chi}^2{_3}=26.6$ and p<0.001 for grey herons, ${\chi}^2{_3}=17.5$ and p<0.001 for great egrets). All species displayed seasonal changes in feeding habitat use and these changes were related with changes in availability of feeding habitats.
