  • To investigate effects of the surface finishing methods (A : conventional press stone, B : enclosing in polyethylene (PE) bag, C : press-tone wrapped with PE film and D : covered with Chinese cabbage leaves 4cm in thickness on Kimchi) on Kimchi quality, pH-values, redness, film forming yeast growth, hardness and sensory quality of Kimchi during storage (for 60 days, at $10{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) in glass vessel $(11{\times}30cm)$ were investigated. pH of the top layer of A, C and D sample were higher than the optimum pH (4.2) of Kimchi, film forming yeast occurred on the surface of Kimchi, color of top layer Kimchi juice was darkened, and panel score of freshness and firmness was significantly worse (p<0.01) than that of sample B. However, in the case of Kimchi stored in PE bag (B), film forming yeast were can't detected visually in the surface of Kimchi, pH values were low as good quality Kimchi, freshness and firmness panel scores and hardness were significantly better (p<0.01) than A, C and D, and redness of juice of top layer of B was also preserved clearly for 60 days. Accordingly among the four surface finishing methods, the B-method was most effective in preserving of y of Kimchi.

  • Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a factor von Neumann algebra with dimension greater than 1. We prove that if a linear map ${\delta}:\mathcal{A}{\rightarrow}\mathcal{A}$ satisfies $${\delta}([[a,b],c])=[[{\delta}(a),b],c]+[[a,{\delta}(b),c]+[[a,b],{\delta}(c)]$$ for any $a,b,c{\in}\mathcal{A}$ with ab = 0 (resp. ab = P, where P is a fixed nontrivial projection of $\mathcal{A}$), then there exist an operator $T{\in}\mathcal{A}$ and a linear map $f:\mathcal{A}{\rightarrow}\mathbb{C}I$ vanishing at every second commutator [[a, b], c] with ab = 0 (resp. ab = P) such that ${\delta}(a)=aT-Ta+f(a)$ for any $a{\in}\mathcal{A}$.

  • Metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene, the most thoroughly studied PAH, was studied in mouse placental microsomes incubated with $^3$H-labeled B(a)P. B(a)P metabolites were separated using HPLC fitted with a C18- $\mu$ Bondapak column. The single major metabolite by mouse placental microsomes induced by B(a)P was 7, 8-diol B(a)P, while 4, 5-diol B(a)P, 3-OH and quinones constituted minor metabolites. Treatment with 3-methyl-cholanthrene to mice resulted in indudion of hydroxy B(a)P and quinone compounds. Phenobarbital treated mouse placental microsomes also showed elevated level of B(a)P metabolism with 7, 8-diol B(a)P as a major metabolite.

  • For the induction motor and inverter type motor design, prediction and analysis of core loss including higher harmonics have been studied. In this work, we have generated two symmetrical ac minor loop in the fundamental hysteresis loop whose positions are zero induction region and saturation induction region, and we could pre-dict core loss including higher harmonics inductions. using the following modified superposition principle; $P_c(B_0,f_0,B_h,nf_0)=P_c(B_0,f_0)+(n-1)[K_1(B_0)P_{cL}(B_h,nf_0)+(1-k_1(B_0))P_{cH}(B_h,nf_0)].$Using this equation we could also analyze core losses including higher harmonic induction under different maximum magnetic induction, different amplitude of higher harmonic induction with different harmonic frequencies.

  • Objective : Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) has proven useful in the study of the natural history of ischemic stroke. However, the potential of DW-MRI for the evaluation of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) has not been established. In this study, we investigated DW-MRI findings of CSDH and evaluated the impact of the image findings on postoperative outcomes of CSDH. Methods : We studied 131 CSDH patients who had undergone single burr hole drainage surgery. The images of the subdural hematomas on preoperative DW-MRI and computed tomography (CT) were divided into three groups based on their signal intensity and density : 1) homogeneous (iso or low) density on CT and homogeneous low signal intensity on DW-MRI; 2) homogeneous (iso or low) density on CT and mixed signal intensity on DW-MRI; and 3) heterogeneous density on CT and mixed signal intensity on DW-MRI. On the basis of postoperative CT, we also divided the patients into 3 groups of surgical outcomes according to residual hematoma and mass effect. Results : Analysis showed statistically significant differences in surgical (A to B : p<0.001, A to C : p<0.001, B to C : p=0.129) and functional (A to B : p=0.039, A to C : p<0.001, B to C : p=0.108) outcomes and treatment failure rates (A to B : p=0.037, A to C : p=0.03, B to C : p=1) between the study groups. In particular, group B and group C showed worse outcomes and higher treatment failure rates than group A. Conclusion : CSDH with homogeneous density on CT was characterized by signal intensity on DW-MRI. In CSDH patients, performing DW-MRI as well as CT helps to predict postoperative treatment failure or complications.

  • As one of researches to clarify the taxonomic status of roe deer from Jeju island (C. pygargus tianschanicus), we analyzed partial sequences of mtDNA cytochrome b gene from six roe deers at Jeju island in Korea. Maximum nucleotide Tamura & Nei's distance among three haplotypes was 0.005, and this distance was comparable to the diversity within other roe deer subspecies: it is suggested that roe deers from the mainland dispersed rarely to Jejudo Island, although further analyses are ne-cessary to decide whether or not it was occurred by human introduction. Furthermore, nucleotide distance between cytochrome b sequences of roe deers from Jeju (C. pygargus tianschanicus) and the sequence of roe deer from west Siberia(C. p. pygargus), obtained from GenBank, was average 0.013, and it is suggested that C. p. tianschanicus diverged from C. p. pygargus of west Siberia 0.65 Myr ago.

  • Generalizing modular lattices, a concept of modular ordered sets was introduced by Chajda and Rachunek. In this paper, we characterize modular ordered sets as those partially ordered set P satisfying that for $a,\;b,\;c\;{\in}\;P\;with\;b\;{\leq}\;c,\;l(a,\;b)\;=\;l(a,\;c)\;and\;u(a,\;b)\;=\;u(a,\;c)$ imply $b\;=\;c$. Using this, we obtain a sufficient condition for them. We also discuss the modularity of the Dedekind-MacNeille completions of ordered sets.

  • The baby-step giant-step algorithm seeks b in a discrete logarithm problem when a,c,p of $a^b{\equiv}c$(mod p) are already given. It does so by dividing p by m block of $m={\lceil}{\sqrt{p}}{\rceil}$ length and letting one giant walk straight toward $a^0$ with constant m strides in search for b. In this paper, I basically reduce $m={\lceil}{\sqrt{p}}{\rceil}$ to p/l, $a^l$ > p and replace a giant with an adult who is designed to walk straight with constant l strides. I also extend the algorithm to allow $2^k$ adults to walk simultaneously. As a consequence, the proposed algorithm quarters the execution time of the basic adult-walk method when applied to $2^k$, (k=2) in the range of $1{\leq}b{\leq}p-1$. In conclusion, the proposed algorithm greatly shorten the step number of baby-step giant-step.

  • Bacillus sp. $\beta$-mannanase was purified by DEAE-sephadex ion exchange column chromatography. The partially purified P-mannanase exhibited maximum activity at pH 6.0 and 5$0^{\circ}C$, and was stable at a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0, and at temperature between 30 to 5$0^{\circ}C$. Konjac glucomannan was hydrolyzed by the purified $\beta$-mannanase, and then hydrolysates separated by 1st activated carbon column chromatography and 2nd sephadex G-25 gel filtration. The main hydrolysates were composed of D.P 5 and 7 glucomannooligosaccharides by TLC and FACE method. To investigate the effects of guar gum glucomannooligosaccharides on the in vitro growth of B. longum, B. bifidum, B. infantis, B. adolescentis, B. animalis, and B. breve, Bifidobacterium spp. were cultivated individually on the modified-MRS medium containing carbon SOUTce such as D.P 5, and D.P 7 glucomannooligosaccharides, respectively. B. longum grew up 4.6-fold and 5.3-fold more effectively by the replacement of D.P 5 and 7 glucomannooligosaccharides as the carbon source in a comparasion of standard MRS. Also, B. breve and B. animalis slightly grew up by the treatment of D.P 5 glucomannooligosaccharide.

  • In this paper, we investigate the transcendental meromorphic solutions with finite order of two different types of difference equations $${\sum\limits_{j=1}^{n}}a_jf(z+c_j)={\frac{P(z,f)}{Q(z,f)}}={\frac{{\sum_{k=0}^{p}}b_kf^k}{{\sum_{l=0}^{q}}d_lf^l}}$$ and $${\prod\limits_{j=1}^{n}}f(z+c_j)={\frac{P(z,f)}{Q(z,f)}={\frac{{\sum_{k=0}^{p}}b_kf^k}{{\sum_{l=0}^{q}}d_lf^l}}$$ that share three distinct values with another meromorphic function. Here $a_j$, $b_k$, $d_l$ are small functions of f and $a_j{\not{\equiv}}(j=1,2,{\ldots},n)$, $b_p{\not{\equiv}}0$, $d_q{\not{\equiv}}0$. $c_j{\neq}0$ are pairwise distinct constants. p, q, n are non-negative integers. P(z, f) and Q(z, f) are two mutually prime polynomials in f.
