  • The essential difference between precast concrete structures and in situ concrete structures lies in the precast concrete panel structres, it is necessary to understand the bahavior of joints and their implications regarding overall structural behavior. Form such a point of view, this experimental study observes the components and joint behavior under the stress states expected of precast concrete panel structures subjected to lateral loads. 2 full-scale subassemblages were fabricated and tested. The test results show that the characteristics of horizontsl joints and wall coupling beams mainly govern the whole hahavior of P.C. structres.

  • Large panel building systems are composed of vertical wall panels which support horizontal roof and floor panels to form a box like structure. The simplecity of the connections, which makes precast concrete economically viable, causes a lack of continuity in stiffness, strength and ductility. This precast concrete large panel systems typically have weak connection regions. Three types of 2-story full-scale precast concrete subassemblages were tested under reversed cyclic loading. The seismic resistance capacity and failure mode of each system are compared in connection with the characteristics of joint connection details.

  • Precast concrete (P.C.) large panel structures have usually weaker stiffness at joints than that of monolithic in-situ reinforced concrete structures. But structural designers do not in general take into account this characteristics of P. C. large panel structures and use the same analytical models as for the monolithic structure. Therefore, the results of analysis obtained by using these models may be quite different from those actually occuring in real P.C. structure. In this study, the change in force and stress distribution and deflections of structure caused by applying lower shear stiffness at vertical joints are investigated through trying several finite element modeling schemes specific for P.C. structures. Finally, for engineers in practice. a simplified model, which takes account of the effect of lower shear stiffness at vertical joints, is proposed with the understanding on possible amount of errors.

  • Though stiffnesses of joints in precast concrete(P.C.) large panel structures are known to be generally less than those in monolithic reinforced concrete wall structures, designers have very little information on the quantitative values with regards to these stiffnesses. The aim of this paper is to provide this quantitative information, in particular, on the compressive stiffness of horizontal joints, based on the analytical results derived from several experiments. Also, it is shown that the approach from the contact problem to determine this stiffness gives a value very simlar to those obtained above.

  • Construction of high-rise precast concrete apartment is an atractive alternative solution for severe shortage of residential facilities, especially in metropolitan areas in Korea. New building regulations enforced since 1988 requires all buildings higher than 6 storeys to be designed for earthquake. However, we hardly have any experience on seismic design of precast concrete buildings. This paper deals with methodology of seismic design and design considerations of connections for the large panel structures. Also addressed in this paper are studies needed to develop proper seismic design procedures of precast concrete buildings.

  • This research is related to the experimental verification of the shear resistance of horizontal joint in precast concrete large panel structures. a total of 9 spicemens was tested to assess their shear resistance. In the tests lateral forces have been applied to the specimen to cause shear failure while keeping the axial compression consistantly. The shear resistances of the specimens have been evaluated by investigating the deformations and failure modes of the specimens. From the test results, it is observed that the shear resistance of the horizontal joints of P.C panel structures are closely connected with shear friction mechanism.

  • The objective of the research stated here was aimed at providing the information needed to establish the Korean Seismic Design Code Recommendations and Guides for precast concrete (P.C) large panel apartment buildings. This was accomplished by investigation and analysis of the response of P.C large panel structures subjected to shaking table excitation simulating earthquake ground motion. one of the test specimens used was 1/3-scaled 3-story box P.C model provided by Sam-Hwan Camus Corporation. The 4m $\times$4m shaking table was used to simulate the earthquake ground motion. the employed input accelerogram was the one recorded as Taft N21E component and the peak ground acceleration(PGA) was scaled depending on the desired level of seismic severity and the time according to dynamic similitude rule. Based on results obtained from shaking table test of this P.C model, the following conclusions were drawn . (1) As far as test specimen is concerned, the seismic safety factors turns out to be 7~8. (2)P.C model has damping ratio of about8% which is twice larger than in-situ R.C. structure. And (3)this model has global displacement ductility ratio of 2~3 through the energy dissipation by opening and sliding of joints.

  • The objective of this study is to provide the information on the techniques of manufacturing and experiment in small scale modeling of precast concrete(P.C.)large panel structures. The adopted scale was 1/5th 4types of experiments were performed : material tests for model concrete and model reinforcement, compressive test of horizontal joint, shear test of vertical joint and cyclic static test of 2-story subassemblage structure. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions are drawn: (1)Model concrete may have in general larger compressive strength than expected. (2) Model reinforcement can show less ductility if the annealing processes were performed without using vaccuum tube. (3) Failure modes of horizontal and vertical joints were almost same for both prototype and model. But the strength of model appears to be higher than required by similitude law. (4)Hysteretic behavior of 1/5 scale subassemblage model can be made quite similar to prototype's if the ductility of model reinforcement and compressive strength of model concrete could be representative of those of prototype.
